Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Money

Victor Hale looked nothing like the criminal mastermind I had imagined.

He was in his late fifties, neatly dressed, with silver hair and an expensive watch. He carried himself like someone accustomed to being welcomed into private offices.

But he didn't look at me like a guest.

He looked at me like an obstacle.

"Mrs. Carter," he said.

"I believe we should talk.""

I stepped aside.

"Then come in.""

Rachel entered first.

Daniel remained beside the kitchen island.

Victor placed his briefcase on the table and opened it.

"Before we begin, I want to make something clear. I did not forge anyone's signature.""

I looked at him.

"That's a very specific thing to deny.""

He gave a thin smile.

"I work with financial structures. My responsibility is to arrange transactions based on information provided by my clients.""

"Which clients?""

"Daniel and Rachel.""

I turned toward my husband.

"So the two of you hired him.""

Rachel pulled out a chair.

"Please, Claire. Sit down. This is going to take a while.""

I remained standing.

Victor removed several documents.

"The insurance policy was originally purchased as part of an estate planning arrangement following the death of Daniel's father.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Your father died eight years ago.""

"Yes.""

Victor continued.

"At the time, Daniel and Rachel were involved in settling certain family obligations.""

"What obligations?""

Rachel answered.

"Our father left debts.""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Not ordinary debts," he said.

"Business debts.""

Victor nodded.

"Your father had guaranteed several loans for a property development company. After his death, creditors began pursuing the estate.""

I sat down slowly.

"How much?""

"Approximately $420,000.""

I looked at Daniel.

"You never told me that.""

"It wasn't our debt.""

"Then why did you get involved?""

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

"Because Rachel and I inherited the company.""

Rachel leaned forward.

"And because our father had made promises to people. We didn't want his reputation destroyed.""

I stared at her.

"So you took responsibility for his business debts.""

"Initially, yes.""

Victor opened another folder.

"The insurance policy was intended to provide security for those obligations. Daniel was the insured person. Claire was named as primary beneficiary, and the children were contingent beneficiaries.""

I nodded.

"I've seen that.""

"But there was a separate agreement. If Daniel died before the obligations were settled, a portion of the policy proceeds would be allocated to satisfy outstanding business liabilities.""

I looked at him.

"How much?""

"Up to $420,000.""

I felt sick.

"Then why was I listed as the beneficiary?""

"Because the remaining amount would go to you.""

Rachel interrupted.

"Which is exactly what I wanted.""

I turned toward her.

"Then why did you try to replace me?""

Her expression changed.

Victor closed the folder.

"Because the agreement was amended.""

I looked at Daniel.

"When?""

"Last year.""

"Why?""

He didn't answer.

Rachel did.

"Because Daniel was no longer making the payments.""

I stared at her.

"And you thought you should receive his insurance money?""

She shook her head.

"I thought the money should go where it was supposed to go.""

"To you.""

"To the business.""

I laughed.

"You're very good at changing the names of things.""

Rachel's face tightened.

Victor interrupted.

"The current situation is more complicated than a simple beneficiary dispute.""

He opened a document.

"The policy was used as collateral for a loan. The lender has certain rights under the contract. If the policy lapses or the debt remains unpaid, the available benefit could be substantially reduced.""

I looked at Daniel.

"How much is left?""

Victor hesitated.

"That depends on the outstanding loan and accrued interest.""

"Give me a number.""

"Approximately $270,000 in available benefit, subject to confirmation.""

I leaned back.

"So the $750,000 policy you told me about is now worth $270,000.""

Daniel looked down.

I turned toward Victor.

"And where is the money from the policy loan?""

He closed the folder.

"That information needs to be reviewed.""

"By whom?""

"Your attorneys.""

I stood.

"Then we're finished here.""

Victor didn't move.

"Mrs. Carter, I would advise against making any sudden decisions. The financial situation can still be stabilized.""

"By giving you more access to my family's money?""

He looked at Daniel.

"Your husband understands the arrangement.""

I looked at my husband.

"Does he?""

Daniel finally spoke.

"Claire, Victor helped us when nobody else would.""

I stared at him.

"Did he help you forge my signature?""

"No.""

"Did he help you borrow against the house?""

Daniel hesitated.

"That was separate.""

Victor closed his briefcase.

"Mr. Carter, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

I stepped between them.

"No. Whatever you have to say about my husband, you can say in front of me.""

Rachel laughed.

"You're acting like you're the only person who has lost something.""

I turned.

"What have you lost, Rachel?""

She stood.

"Our father's business. Our inheritance. Years of work.""

"And I lost $210,000.""

"You're still going to get some of it back.""

"From whom?""

She looked at Daniel.

He said nothing.

I walked to the front door and opened it.

"Both of you need to leave.""

Victor picked up his briefcase.

"Mrs. Carter, I hope you understand that the documentation you have seen is incomplete.""

I met his eyes.

"Then send the complete documents to my attorney.""

He nodded.

Rachel walked out without another word.

Daniel stayed.

I closed the door.

For a few seconds, we stood in silence.

Then I asked, "What happened to the $300,000 policy loan?""

He looked toward the kitchen.

"Some of it went to the old business debts.""

"Some?""

"Some went to Victor.""

I stared.

"Why?""

"He arranged the financing.""

"Did you pay him?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

Daniel sat down.

"About $90,000.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"And the rest?""

He looked at me.

"I don't know.""

I shook my head.

"You've borrowed money against your life insurance, our retirement, our home, and our daughter's identity. And you still don't know where the money went?""

He covered his face.

I walked upstairs.

That night, I stayed at Emily's apartment.

At 11:32 p.m., Michael called.

"Claire, I received the insurance documents.""

"What did you find?""

"Something that changes the situation.""

I sat up.

"What?""

"The policy ownership transfer to Westlake appears to have been completed after the company was dissolved.""

I frowned.

"Can that happen?""

"Not normally. We need the insurer's original records. But there's another issue.""

"What?""

"The policy loan was not issued to Daniel personally.""

I felt my heart begin to pound.

"Who received it?""

Michael paused.

"An entity called Hale Advisory Partners.""

Victor's company.

"Why?""

"We're trying to establish that. But the loan authorization contains a digital signature attributed to you.""

I closed my eyes.

"I never signed it.""

"I believe you. We're requesting the authentication records.""

I looked toward Emily's bedroom.

She was asleep.

"Michael, how much money did Victor receive?""

"According to the current records, $90,000.""

I swallowed.

"Can we recover it?""

"Possibly. But we need to understand the relationship between the loan and the underlying policy.""

I thanked him.

Before ending the call, he said, "There's one more thing. We found an insurance application for a second policy.""

I froze.

"On Daniel?""

"No.""

"Then who?""

Michael's voice lowered.

"Your daughter.""

I sat completely still.

"Emily?""

"Yes. The application lists Daniel as the owner and Rachel as the primary beneficiary.""

I felt physically ill.

"How much is the policy worth?""

"Five hundred thousand dollars.""

I couldn't speak.

Michael continued.

"The application was submitted three months ago.""

Emily was twenty-one.

A healthy young woman with an ordinary college life.

Her father had taken out a half-million-dollar life insurance policy on her without telling her.

And her aunt was listed to receive the money.

I whispered, "Can you stop it?""

"We're contacting the insurer immediately. But Claire, there's something else.""

"What?""

"The application includes a medical authorization.""

I looked toward Emily's room again.

"Whose signature?""

"Emily's.""

"She didn't sign it.""

"I understand.""

I ended the call and walked into my daughter's bedroom.

She stirred when I touched her shoulder.

"Mom?""

I sat beside her.

"Sweetheart, I need you to wake up.""

She rubbed her eyes.

"What happened?""

I took her hand.

"Your father may have taken out a life insurance policy in your name.""

She sat up.

"What?""

I nodded.

"Your aunt is listed as the beneficiary.""

Emily stared at me.

Then she whispered:

"Mom, I remember something.""

"What?""

"Last summer, Aunt Rachel asked me to take a medical examination. She said it was part of a scholarship program.""

My blood ran cold.

"Did you go?""

Emily nodded.

"She drove me to a clinic. She said it was a routine wellness check.""

I gripped her hand.

"Did you sign anything?""

Emily shook her head.

"No. But she asked me a lot of questions about my medical history.""

I felt a wave of nausea.

Then Emily reached for her phone.

"Mom, there's something else.""

She opened an old message from Rachel.

It was dated the day of the medical appointment.

*Rachel: Don't mention the examination to your parents. It's just paperwork for the family trust.*

I stared at the message.

Then Emily opened another one.

This time, the sender was Daniel.

*Daniel: Make sure you complete everything Rachel asks. It's important for our family's future.*

I looked at my daughter.

She was crying.

I held her close.

And in that moment, I understood that this wasn't simply a financial betrayal anymore.

Daniel and Rachel had been making decisions about our daughter's identity, finances, and even her insurance without her knowledge.

May you like

But why would they need a half-million-dollar policy on a twenty-one-year-old college student?

And what had Victor Hale arranged that required them to keep the medical examination secret?
