Chapter 13: The Daughter My Mother Chose

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Olivia stood beside the wooden table, staring at the photograph of herself as a newborn.

I held my phone against my ear.

“Evelyn, say that again.””

“Your mother opened an investment account on the day Olivia was born. The original deposit came from a Carter estate account. Olivia Bennett was named the sole beneficiary.””

“How much money?””

“Twelve million dollars, according to the current valuation. We are still verifying the historical transactions.””

I looked at Olivia.

She was crying silently.

“Why would my mother give her twelve million dollars?””

“I don't know yet,” Evelyn replied.

“But the account appears to have been established under a separate legal arrangement. It wasn't part of the three-daughter trust.””

“Then whose money was it?””

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

I ended the call.

Olivia slowly sat down.

“Nia, I swear I didn't know.””

I looked at the wooden box.

The photograph.

The letter.

The cassette.

Everything my mother had hidden for years was suddenly sitting between us.

“Did your mother ever tell you who your biological parents were?””

Olivia shook her head.

“She said my birth mother died during childbirth. She told me my biological father wasn't listed on the certificate.””

“Did she ever mention Robert Carter?””

“No.””

“Did she know my mother?””

Olivia nodded.

“They were best friends. My mother worked with yours at a community charity before I was born.””

I picked up the photograph again.

My mother was smiling.

She looked exhausted, but happy.

The newborn beside her was Olivia.

“Why would she give you away?””

Olivia covered her face.

“I don't know.””

I sat opposite her.

“Look at me.””

She raised her eyes.

“I'm not accusing you of anything. But we need the truth.””

She nodded.

I called Evelyn back and asked her to meet us at the house.

Less than an hour later, she arrived with Marcus and a folder of financial records.

Evelyn placed the documents on the table.

“We've traced the original twelve-million-dollar account.””

Marcus opened his laptop.

“The money didn't come from the inheritance Robert left his daughters. It came from a separate investment account created several years before his death.””

I frowned.

“Who owned it?””

“Robert Carter.””

Olivia looked up.

“Then why did my mother put my name on it?””

Evelyn examined another page.

“Because Robert established it for a specific purpose. The account was intended to support a child whose identity was protected.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Olivia?””

Evelyn nodded.

“But the records don't establish why.””

Marcus displayed a transaction history.

“The account was funded through the sale of two commercial properties. Those properties weren't part of the family portfolio. They were privately owned by Robert.””

I looked at the dates.

One transaction occurred fourteen years ago.

The other twelve years ago.

Both were before Olivia's birth.

“Why would my father set up an account for a child he supposedly didn't know existed?””

Evelyn opened the next folder.

“There's a birth registration record.””

She slid it across the table.

Olivia's full name appeared at the top.

Her mother's name was listed as the birth mother.

The father's section was blank.

But beneath it was a sealed supplemental declaration.

Evelyn opened the attached copy.

The document contained a statement signed by my father.

I, Robert James Carter, acknowledge that the child born to Elaine Bennett on October 14 is my biological daughter. I request that her identity remain protected until she reaches adulthood.

Olivia began sobbing.

I stared at the document.

My father had been Olivia's biological father.

The man I had spent my entire life believing had only two daughters had fathered four children.

Four.

And he had kept the truth from all of us.

Olivia looked at me.

“So we're sisters?””

I couldn't answer immediately.

Then I reached across the table and took her hand.

“Yes.””

She broke down completely.

“I didn't know. Nia, I swear I didn't know.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“I believe you.””

Evelyn waited until we had composed ourselves.

“There's another issue. Your mother's signature appears on several documents connected to the account.””

I looked at her.

“What did she do?””

“Your mother was the legal custodian of the fund until Olivia turned eighteen. However, the account was never transferred into Olivia's control.””

“Why?””

Marcus turned his laptop around.

“Because someone continued making withdrawals.””

I looked at the screen.

The first withdrawal occurred when Olivia was nineteen.

The second when she was twenty-two.

The third when she was twenty-five.

All three were substantial.

“Who received the money?””

Marcus highlighted the destination accounts.

The first belonged to a company registered to Richard Reed.

The second belonged to Daniel Carter.

The third belonged to a company called Bennett Consulting.

I looked at Olivia.

“Did your mother own a company?””

“No.””

Marcus nodded.

“That company was dissolved six years ago. Its director was Margaret Ellis.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Margaret again.

The same woman who had helped us find the trust.

The same woman who had been accused of stealing money by my father.

Evelyn closed the folder.

“We need to speak with her immediately.””

My phone rang.

Margaret's name appeared.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Nia, I need you to listen carefully. Richard knows about the account.””

“We know about the account too.””

A pause.

“You found the documents?””

“Yes.””

“Then you know about Olivia.””

I looked at my best friend.

“Yes.””

Margaret exhaled.

“Your mother made me promise to protect her.””

“By stealing twelve million dollars?””

“I didn't steal anything.””

“Then where did the money go?””

Silence.

“Margaret?””

“I used the money to keep Richard away from Olivia.””

I felt anger rising.

“Explain.””

“Richard discovered that Robert had another daughter. He wanted to use her as leverage. Your mother asked me to move the money into protected accounts so he couldn't access it.””

“And Daniel?””

“Daniel worked with Richard. He knew about the fund.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She motioned for me to continue.

“Where is the money now?””

Margaret's voice broke.

“Most of it is gone.””

“How?””

“Richard took control of the accounts after Robert died. He threatened me. He threatened your mother. He said he would destroy every record connecting Olivia to Robert.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why did you lie to us?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“You let Daniel forge my signature.””

“I didn't know about the property transfer until yesterday.””

“You signed documents as a witness.””

“I signed some documents under pressure. But I never authorized the transfer of your house.””

Evelyn leaned toward the phone.

“Margaret, this is Evelyn Harrison. I need you to preserve every original document in your possession. Do not destroy anything.””

Margaret began crying.

“I can't do that.””

“Why not?””

“Because Richard is outside my house.””

A loud bang sounded through the phone.

Margaret screamed.

Then the call disconnected.

Marcus immediately contacted the police.

Evelyn stood.

“We're going to her house.””

I looked at Olivia.

She wiped her tears and picked up her coat.

“I'm coming.””

As we reached the front door, my phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

*You have no idea what your mother did to protect Olivia. Ask her why Robert never got to meet his fourth daughter.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

*And ask why your mother was the last person to leave his hospital room.*

I looked at the photograph of my mother holding newborn Olivia.

May you like

For the first time, I wondered whether my mother had protected us.

Or whether she had protected herself.
