Chapter 5: The Wedding Was Never an Accident
I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.
Daniel stood beside Margaret Ellis outside a law office.
He was wearing a navy suit I remembered buying him for his birthday.
The date was three months before our wedding.
“Where did you get this?”” I asked.
Vanessa folded her hands.
“From Margaret.””
“Why would she give you a photograph of my husband?””
“Because she knew Daniel was looking for something.””
“What?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Your father's original estate agreement.””
I leaned back.
“Explain.””
She took a sip of water.
“My father kept two versions of his estate documents. The first was the original arrangement. The second was created after your mother died.””
“My mother died when I was twelve.””
“Yes.””
“And you were already an adult.””
Vanessa nodded.
“My mother contacted Robert after your mother passed away. She wanted him to acknowledge me publicly. He refused. They argued for months.””
I stared at her.
“What does that have to do with Daniel?””
“Margaret handled the financial records. She knew about both daughters. She also knew that your father had created a separate investment account for each of us.””
I remembered the annual trust statements.
There had always been a section I never understood, labeled contingent assets.
I had assumed it was an ordinary investment category.
“Why didn't Margaret tell me?””
“Because your father made her promise to keep the arrangement private until you turned thirty.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“I'm thirty now.””
“Exactly.””
Vanessa opened her purse again.
She removed a folded piece of paper and slid it toward me.
It was a letter addressed to her.
The handwriting was my father's.
Vanessa,
I have failed you in ways that money cannot repair. I cannot undo the years you spent believing I chose another family over you.
But I can make sure you have something of your own.
When Nia turns thirty, Margaret will explain the arrangements. Neither daughter should be able to claim the other's share. I want you both to have security without having to depend on anyone.
I read the final line.
Please don't let anyone convince you that my love for one daughter means less love for the other.
My eyes burned.
For years, I had thought my father had given me everything.
Now I was learning that he had left an entire part of himself outside our home.
“Did you know about me growing up?”” I asked.
Vanessa nodded.
“I saw pictures of you.””
“Did you ever try to contact me?””
“Once.””
“When?””
“When you were seventeen. I sent a letter to your school.””
I stared at her.
“I never received it.””
“I know. Your father called me afterward and told me you didn't want to meet me.””
My chest tightened.
“He lied to both of us.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Did you love Daniel?””
She looked at the window.
“I thought I did.””
“And now?””
“Now I think he wanted something from both of us.””
I studied her face.
“What did he tell you about me?””
“That you were cold. That your marriage was already over. That you were planning to divorce him after securing your father's inheritance.””
I laughed bitterly.
“I was planning to surprise him with an ultrasound picture.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
“How?””
“He showed me a message from the clinic.””
I froze.
“What message?””
“He said you had an appointment. He told me you were going to announce the pregnancy because you wanted to stop him from leaving.””
I stared at her.
“I didn't know I was pregnant until yesterday.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“Daniel knew.””
The café seemed suddenly too loud.
Olivia leaned forward.
“What do you mean he knew?””
Vanessa took out her phone.
“I have a screenshot.””
She unlocked it and showed us a conversation.
Daniel's name appeared at the top.
The message was dated three days earlier.
*Daniel:* Nia has another appointment this week. If the test is positive, everything becomes more complicated.
*Vanessa:* You said she couldn't have children.
*Daniel:* The doctors said it was unlikely. I need to finish the transfer before she finds out.
My hands went cold.
I read the exchange again.
Daniel knew there was a possibility I was pregnant.
And he had been rushing the transfer before I knew.
“There's more,” Vanessa said.
She scrolled.
*Daniel:* Once the house is transferred, she won't have the resources to challenge anything.
*Vanessa:* What if she finds out?
*Daniel:* She won't have a choice.
I felt Olivia's hand close around mine.
“That's enough,” she whispered.
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
She showed me another message.
*Daniel:* Margaret has the original. If she cooperates, we can finish everything.
*Vanessa:* And if she doesn't?
*Daniel:* She has her own reasons to stay quiet.
I looked up.
“What reasons?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
I took a photograph of the messages.
Then I stood.
“I'm going to find Margaret.””
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
“Wait.””
I turned.
“I need to tell you something.””
“What?””
She looked down at her hands.
“Daniel didn't just tell me your marriage was over. He said your father had specifically chosen me to receive the house.””
I stared at her.
“Why would you believe that?””
“Because he showed me a document with your father's signature.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Where is it?””
“He has the original.””
“Daniel?””
She nodded.
“He keeps it in his office.””
Olivia stood.
“Then we get a lawyer and let the police handle it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“If Daniel knows you're investigating, he'll destroy everything.””
I looked at her.
“You're asking me to trust you after you slept with my husband?””
“No,” she said quietly.
“I'm asking you to understand that Daniel used me too.””
I wanted to hate her.
Part of me still did.
But the messages were real.
And the photograph of Daniel meeting Margaret had been taken before our wedding.
My phone rang.
An unfamiliar number appeared.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's trembling voice came through.
“Is this Nia Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Margaret Ellis.””
I stood straighter.
“Margaret?””
“I need to speak with you.””
“I'm trying to find you.””
“I know.””
Her breathing sounded uneven.
“Listen carefully. Daniel has been asking questions about the original trust documents. He knows you have started looking into the transfer.””
“How do you know?””
“Because he was at my house this morning.””
I exchanged a glance with Olivia.
“What did he want?””
Margaret lowered her voice.
“He wanted the original will.””
“Do you have it?””
“Yes.””
“Then give it to me.””
“I can't.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why not?””
“Because I made a promise to your father.””
“What promise?””
“That neither you nor Vanessa would receive the original document until I had verified something important.””
“What?””
Margaret was silent.
Then she said something that made me grip the table.
“Your father didn't leave you two daughters' inheritance.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“He left three.””
Before I could respond, I heard a crash on her end of the line.
Margaret gasped.
Then a man's voice shouted in the background.
“Give me the file!””
The call disconnected.
I immediately called back.
No answer.
Olivia grabbed her keys.
“Where does she live?””
I looked at the photograph Vanessa had given me.
There was an address written in the corner.
I read it aloud.
May you like
And as we rushed toward the exit, Vanessa whispered something I would never forget.
“I think I know who the third daughter is.””
