Chapter 14: The Last Promise My Father Made
Margaret's house was surrounded by police when we arrived.
A broken window lay near the front entrance.
Two officers were speaking to a neighbor while another searched the garden.
Evelyn approached the officer in charge.
“I'm Evelyn Harrison. Margaret Ellis is my client in an ongoing property fraud investigation.””
The officer nodded.
“She was found in the kitchen. She's being transported to the hospital.””
“Is she conscious?””
“Yes. She's shaken, but she'll be okay.””
I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
Then I noticed something on the pavement.
A black leather briefcase.
It was lying beside a parked car.
Marcus recognized it.
“That's Richard's.””
An officer approached.
“Do you know whose property this is?””
Evelyn pointed toward the briefcase.
“Possibly a person connected to our investigation.””
The officer opened it carefully.
Inside were several folders, a laptop, and a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
I stared at it.
“Nia Carter.””
Evelyn took a photograph before the officer opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
You have spent your entire life believing Robert was the only person who made sacrifices for you.
You are wrong.
Your mother gave up everything to keep you alive.
Ask her why she never told you what happened in the hospital.
I felt a chill.
“My mother is dead,” I whispered.
The officer looked at me.
“Do you know who left this?””
“No.””
Marcus examined the briefcase.
“There are files here about the original trust.””
Evelyn asked the officer whether the materials could be preserved as evidence.
He agreed.
We spent the next hour answering questions.
By the time we reached the hospital, Margaret had been moved to a private room.
Her forehead was bandaged.
She looked exhausted.
When she saw me, she began crying.
“I'm sorry, Nia.””
I pulled a chair beside her bed.
“Tell me everything.””
Margaret looked toward Evelyn.
The lawyer nodded.
“We're recording a formal statement with your consent. Anything you tell us will be documented.””
Margaret swallowed.
“Robert knew Richard was stealing from the company. He also knew Daniel had been placed in your life.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did my father know Daniel was going to marry me?””
“He suspected it. He had evidence that Richard was paying Daniel to get close to you.””
Vanessa, who had accompanied us, looked horrified.
“Why didn't anyone stop the wedding?””
Margaret looked at her.
“Robert tried.””
“How?””
“He contacted your mother. He wanted her to tell you about Nia and the trust before the wedding.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“My mother never said anything.””
“Because Richard threatened her.””
Margaret took a breath.
“Richard told her that if she exposed the truth, he would make sure Vanessa never received anything from Robert's estate.””
I looked at her.
“What happened at the hospital?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Robert had discovered the missing payments. He wanted to confront Richard, but he was already unwell. The stress had made his heart condition worse.””
“Did Richard give him medication?””
“I don't know. I wasn't there when he collapsed.””
“But you were at the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Your mother called me. She said Robert wanted to see me.””
I leaned forward.
“What did he say?””
Margaret began crying.
“He told me that the original evidence was hidden in the family trust records. He said Richard would eventually come looking for it.””
“Then what?””
“He asked me to protect the girls.””
“Which girls?””
“All four.””
I stared at her.
“Did my father know about Olivia?””
Margaret nodded.
“He knew before she was born. He loved her. He wanted to acknowledge her publicly, but your mother begged him not to.””
“Why?””
Margaret looked toward Olivia.
“Because Richard had threatened to take the baby.””
Olivia covered her mouth.
“Why would he want me?””
“Because Robert had created the twelve-million-dollar fund for you. Richard believed that if he controlled you, he could eventually access it.””
I felt sick.
My father had been protecting a baby before she was even born.
Margaret continued.
“Your mother arranged for Olivia to be raised by Elaine Bennett, a woman she trusted. She believed the child would be safer away from the Carter name.””
Olivia's eyes filled.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes. Elaine Bennett knew everything.””
Olivia slowly sat down.
Margaret reached toward her.
“Your mother loved you very much.””
Olivia pulled away.
“Then why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she promised your mother she would keep you safe.””
I looked at Margaret.
“And my mother?””
Margaret hesitated.
“Your mother did something else that night.””
“What?””
“She found out that Richard had access to Robert's medical records. She believed he might try to interfere with his treatment.””
I felt my heart pounding.
“Did he?””
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“I don't know.””
“Did my mother refuse the procedure?””
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Why?””
“She believed Richard had arranged for the procedure to be performed by a doctor who was working with him. She was afraid the treatment would be used to harm Robert.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Can that be verified?””
“We'll need the complete medical file and an independent review,” she replied.
Margaret continued.
“Your mother made the decision because Robert had written a medical directive refusing that particular procedure unless an independent specialist approved it.””
“Was there another doctor?””
“Yes. But Richard prevented the specialist from reaching the hospital in time.””
My stomach turned.
“So my father died because Richard interfered with his treatment?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I can't say that. I only know what happened afterward.””
“What?””
“Your mother left the hospital and went to the police. She reported Richard's threats. But the officer handling the complaint was connected to him.””
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“Do you have proof?””
Margaret nodded.
“I kept the original complaint.””
“Where?””
“In a safe deposit box.””
“Which bank?””
Margaret told her.
Marcus immediately made a note.
Then Margaret looked at me.
“There's one more thing.””
I sat down again.
“Tell me.””
“Robert left a final instruction. If the four daughters were ever brought together, they were to receive equal voting rights over the family holding company.””
I frowned.
“But the trust documents show separate shares.””
“The financial shares are separate. The voting rights are equal.””
I looked at Vanessa and Sophie.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn answered.
“It means no single beneficiary can control the company alone. All four must participate in major decisions.””
I looked at Olivia.
My best friend.
My sister.
The woman who had stood beside me through every heartbreak, every failed fertility appointment, and every difficult year of my marriage.
She had been part of my family all along.
Margaret reached beneath her pillow and removed a small envelope.
“Robert gave me this before he died.””
She handed it to me.
Inside was a key and a short note.
To my daughters,
If you have found each other, then I hope the people who divided us have finally lost their power.
There is one final recording in the old family property. It contains the truth about Richard, Daniel, and the night I died.
But don't use it to seek revenge.
Use it to make sure none of you ever has to depend on someone who treats love like a transaction.
I felt tears running down my cheeks.
At the bottom was an address.
My childhood home.
The house where my mother and I had lived before she died.
The house that had been sold years ago.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Who owns it now?””
She checked the property records on her tablet.
Then her face changed.
“Carter Reed Developments.””
Daniel's company.
Vanessa looked at me.
“That's where he keeps the original files.””
I nodded slowly.
“Then that's where we're going.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not without the police.””
I looked down at my father's letter.
He had spent his final days trying to protect his daughters.
I wasn't going to make another reckless decision.
“We'll do it properly,” I said.
That evening, the police secured a warrant to search the old property after Marcus provided evidence connecting it to the suspected fraud.
But before the officers could leave, Evelyn received a call.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
Then she turned toward me.
“Richard Reed has been arrested.””
My heart skipped.
“For what?””
“Attempted destruction of financial records, suspected fraud, and intimidation connected to Margaret's attack.””
I exhaled.
“And Daniel?””
Evelyn looked down at her phone.
“He's missing.””
A second later, my phone rang.
A video message appeared.
Daniel was sitting in a dark room.
His face was bruised.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Nia, if you're watching this, Richard has already been arrested.””
He swallowed.
“I know you think I'm the villain. Maybe I am. But there's something I need you to understand.””
He leaned closer.
“Your father didn't die because of Richard.””
My stomach tightened.
Daniel continued.
“Your mother made the final decision.””
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
Then a second file appeared.
It was a photograph of a hospital document.
My mother's signature was at the bottom.
May you like
And beneath it was a sentence I had never imagined seeing.
*I authorize the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment for Robert Carter.*
