Chapter 12: The Woman Who Walked Away With Everything

The news of Daniel's arrest should have brought relief.

Instead, I felt an uneasy silence settle over me.

Vanessa was still free.

And she had the original trust documents.

Margaret immediately contacted the authorities to confirm Daniel's status. Richard arranged for the will to be placed in secure legal custody.

Grace and Brielle waited with me in the conference room.

Patricia sat alone near the window.

She hadn't spoken since Richard finished reading Robert's will.

Finally, Brielle approached her.

“Mom, did you know Daniel was planning to leave?””

Patricia looked up.

“I knew he was frightened.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Patricia rubbed her forehead.

“He told me he had a plan.””

“What plan?””

“He said he could move the money, disappear for a few months, and return once everything had been settled.””

Brielle stared at her.

“And you let him?””

“I didn't think he would actually do it.””

“Why do you keep pretending you have no responsibility?””

Patricia's eyes filled.

“Because I spent my entire life trying to keep this family together.””

Brielle shook her head.

“You didn't keep it together. You kept it quiet.””

She returned to her chair.

I looked at Patricia.

“Did you ever love my mother?””

She raised her eyes.

For a moment, I thought she would refuse to answer.

Then she said, “Yes.””

The admission surprised me.

“Then why did you hurt her?””

Patricia looked at the old photograph of Robert.

“Because she had everything I wanted.””

“What did she have?””

“Robert's love. His trust. His respect.””

She laughed softly.

“I had his name. His house. His children. But every time he looked at your mother, I knew he wished he had made different choices.””

I studied her.

“So you punished my mother for being loved?””

“I punished her because I was angry.””

“And Grace?””

Patricia looked at my sister.

“I was afraid she would take Daniel's place.””

Grace's voice was quiet.

“I never wanted his place.””

“I know that now.””

“You knew it then too,” Grace replied.

“You just didn't care.””

Patricia lowered her head.

For the first time, I didn't feel the need to argue with her.

Some truths didn't need another response.

My phone rang.

Margaret had just received confirmation.

Daniel had been detained after arriving at the airport with a collection of disputed financial documents.

Vanessa had not been with him.

The authorities had found several forged agreements in his luggage, including copies of the collateral application bearing my name.

But the original trust documents were missing.

I looked at Margaret.

“Where did Vanessa go?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Can she access the trust?””

“Not directly. But she may attempt to use the stolen documents to challenge ownership or obtain financing.””

I thought about the storage facility.

The briefcase.

The private aircraft.

“She has been planning this longer than we know.””

Margaret nodded.

“That's why we need to act before she makes another move.””

Elaine arrived forty minutes later.

She carried a small leather portfolio and looked unusually tired.

When she saw Grace, she stopped.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

Grace stood.

“Hello.””

Elaine's eyes filled.

“I should have found you sooner.””

Grace shook her head.

“You helped my mother. That's enough.””

Elaine turned to me.

“Your mother trusted me with something very important.””

She placed the portfolio on the table.

Inside was a notarized acceptance of the trustee appointment, along with a detailed list of protected assets.

Margaret reviewed the documents.

“These are valid.””

Elaine nodded.

“I've been waiting for confirmation that both beneficiaries were ready.””

I looked at Grace.

She took my hand.

“We're ready.””

Elaine signed the final page.

The moment she finished, Margaret made a series of calls.

The disputed properties were placed under protective restrictions.

The bank received formal notice of the unauthorized loan application.

The trust administrator suspended all pending transactions.

Miller Holdings lost access to the financial records connected to the protected estate.

For the first time, Vanessa could no longer move money simply by presenting a document with my name on it.

I exhaled.

“Is it over?””

Elaine shook her head.

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa still has the originals.””

“And?””

Elaine looked at Margaret.

“The original documents contain information that could expose a much larger fraud involving several properties and companies.””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“She's holding them as leverage.””

My phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from an unfamiliar address.

There was no greeting.

Only a photograph.

It showed Vanessa sitting at a table in a luxury apartment.

On the table was a collection of documents.

Behind her stood a man I didn't recognize.

The message read:

*You have something I want. I have something you need. Meet me tomorrow, or the original trust documents disappear forever.*

I showed Margaret.

She immediately shook her head.

“No. You are not meeting her.””

“I need to know what she wants.””

“We can communicate through counsel.””

A second message arrived.

*Bring Grace. No lawyers.*

Grace leaned over my shoulder.

“She's trying to separate us.””

Elaine nodded.

“That's exactly what she wants.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The man behind Vanessa seemed familiar.

Then I noticed the small emblem on his jacket.

It belonged to a private security company.

I enlarged the image.

The company name was printed beneath the logo.

*Porter Security Services.*

I turned toward Elaine.

“Do you know this company?””

Her expression changed.

“Yes.””

“Who owns it?””

Elaine looked uncomfortable.

“My former husband.””

I stared at her.

“Your former husband?””

She nodded.

“He was Robert's security consultant. He handled several property transfers before Robert died.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“Was he involved in the original trust?””

“Yes.””

“Does he have access to the documents?””

Elaine closed her eyes.

“He helped create some of them.””

The room fell silent.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Then why is he with Vanessa?””

Elaine's voice dropped.

“Because he may have been helping her all along.””

Grace stood.

“Who is he?””

Elaine looked directly at us.

“His name is Thomas Porter.””

I felt a strange chill.

The name sounded familiar.

Then I remembered something from the birthday dinner.

Patricia had mentioned that the family's old financial adviser was retiring.

She had called him Thomas.

I looked at Elaine.

“Was he the attorney who handled the original adoption?””

“No. He was the financial adviser who arranged the company structure.””

“Then how did he get involved with the adoption records?””

Elaine hesitated.

“Because he was there when Daniel's adoption was arranged.””

I stared.

“You said Daniel was adopted privately.””

“He was.””

“By Robert and Patricia?””

Elaine nodded.

“But Thomas handled the financial side.””

I looked at Grace.

“Does that mean he knew about both children?””

Elaine's expression became grim.

“He knew about everything.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

“Mrs. Carter, this is Thomas Porter.””

I looked at Elaine.

She went completely still.

“Why are you calling me?”” I asked.

“Because Vanessa has made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“She believes the original trust documents are enough to give her control.””

“Are they?””

“No.””

“Then why are you helping her?””

A pause.

“I'm not helping her anymore.””

I almost laughed.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because I have the one document she doesn't.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What document?””

“The original birth declaration for Daniel Carter.””

I looked at Margaret.

She motioned for me to continue.

“What does it prove?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“That Daniel was never legally adopted by Patricia.””

I stared at the floor.

“Patricia already showed us a birth certificate.””

“That certificate is fraudulent.””

Elaine covered her mouth.

Thomas continued.

“The original declaration identifies Margaret Miller as Daniel's biological mother and Robert Carter as his father. It also includes a separate acknowledgment signed by Patricia.””

“Why would Patricia sign it?””

“Because she agreed to raise Daniel as her own. But there was a condition.””

“What condition?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he said, “She was never supposed to receive control of his inheritance.””

I closed my eyes.

Another lie.

Another agreement.

Another document someone had hidden.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“I can't tell you over the phone.””

“Then why call?””

“Because Vanessa intends to destroy the original trust records tomorrow. She believes that without them, she can force a settlement.””

“What do you want from me?””

“I want protection.””

Margaret wrote something on a notepad and pushed it toward me.

*Do not promise anything. Ask where the documents are.*

I followed her instruction.

“Where are the documents, Thomas?””

“I have them.””

“All of them?””

“The birth declaration, the original adoption agreement, and Robert's final financial amendment.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“Why didn't you give them to Richard?””

“Because Richard doesn't know the entire story.””

“What story?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Your mother didn't just invest money in Robert's company.””

I stared at Elaine.

“What else?””

“She owned the company before Robert did.””

The room went silent.

Thomas continued.

“Robert didn't build the Carter development empire. Your grandfather did. Your mother inherited it and allowed Robert to manage it under a private agreement.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“What?””

“Your mother was the original controlling owner. Robert was her business partner, not the other way around.””

I looked at the trust documents.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The properties.

The investments.

The hidden financial structures.

My mother hadn't simply helped the Carter family.

She had built the foundation of its wealth.

And Patricia had spent fourteen years pretending the opposite.

Thomas spoke again.

“There's one more thing you should know, Mrs. Carter.””

“What?””

“Vanessa isn't trying to steal the inheritance for herself.””

I frowned.

“Then who is she working for?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“Margaret Miller.””

I looked at Grace.

“But Margaret is dead.””

Thomas was silent for several seconds.

Then he said:

“No, Mrs. Carter. Vanessa's mother is very much alive.””

May you like

And before I could ask another question, he added:

“She is the person who originally planned your marriage to Daniel.””
