Chapter 6: The Woman Who Had My Mother's Eyes
I read Grace's message three times.
Then I called the number.
It rang once.
Twice.
A woman answered.
“Hello?””
“Is this Grace?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Nia Carter.””
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered, “I know.””
I sat inside my car with the engine off.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Grace Miller. I was adopted when I was a baby.””
“Do you know Patricia Carter?””
“I know who she is.””
“Did you know my mother?””
Her voice broke.
“More than you know.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where can I meet you?””
“Not at your house. Not anywhere Daniel can find us.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa has been trying to get me to sign something for months. She told me it was a routine document confirming that I had no interest in the Carter family estate.””
“Did you sign it?””
“No.””
I exhaled.
“Thank God.””
Grace paused.
“Did Elaine give you the photograph?””
“Yes.””
“Then you know Patricia was my birth mother.””
“I know that now.””
“There's something else.””
I waited.
“Your mother didn't just help arrange my adoption. She raised me for nearly a year before the adoption was finalized.””
I gripped the steering wheel.
“What?””
“My adoptive parents told me that my birth mother was young and unable to care for me. They said another woman had helped find a suitable family.””
“That was my mother?””
“Yes.””
I stared through the windshield.
My mother had never told me.
Not when we celebrated birthdays.
Not when I asked about her childhood.
Not even when she was dying.
“Why did she keep you a secret?””
“Because Patricia threatened her.””
“With what?””
Grace took a shaky breath.
“Patricia claimed she could destroy your mother's reputation and expose a financial arrangement that would have put your inheritance at risk.””
I thought about the documents Elaine had shown me.
The trust.
The forged signatures.
The hidden accounts.
“Did my mother know about the trust?””
“She helped create it.””
I sat up.
“Explain.””
“Your mother discovered that Robert Carter had placed money into a private trust for me. But Patricia wanted control of it. She convinced Daniel that if he married you, he could eventually gain access to your family's assets and use them to settle the Carter business debts.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“So my marriage was part of the plan.””
“That's what my mother told me.””
“Did Daniel know?””
Grace was quiet.
Then she said, “He knew enough.””
I thought about our wedding day.
Daniel standing beneath the white flowers, smiling as I walked toward him.
His hand trembling when he placed the ring on my finger.
I had believed he was nervous because he loved me.
Now I wondered whether he was nervous because he was making a long-term investment.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
“I'm staying at a hotel outside the city. I can meet you tomorrow morning.””
“No. Today.””
“Are you sure?””
“I've spent fourteen years being told what I don't need to know. I'm done waiting.””
Grace gave me an address.
Before ending the call, she said something that stopped me.
“Nia?””
“Yes?””
“Your mother left something for you.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
I swallowed.
“Where is it?””
“With me.””
I drove for nearly forty minutes.
The hotel was small, with a narrow parking lot and a lobby that smelled of lemon cleaner.
Grace was waiting near the reception desk.
She stood when she saw me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
She had my mother's eyes.
The same dark brown color. The same slight crease near the left eyebrow. Her hair was lighter, and her face was thinner, but there was something unmistakably familiar about her.
“Hello,” she whispered.
I approached slowly.
“Hi.””
She looked at me as though she had been waiting her entire life for that moment.
Then she reached into her handbag.
“I brought the letter.””
I took it.
The envelope was yellowed and sealed.
My mother's handwriting appeared across the front.
*For Nia, when she is ready to know the truth.*
My knees weakened.
Grace caught my arm.
“Sit down.””
We moved to a small table near the window.
I opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a photocopy of an original trust agreement.
I recognized my mother's handwriting immediately.
My dearest Nia,
If you're reading this, it means the people I tried to keep away from you have finally found their way into your life.
I am sorry.
You were never meant to carry the burden of another family's secrets.
Grace is your sister, though I know that truth may be difficult to understand.
I helped bring her into this world, and I helped keep her safe when Patricia was unable to protect her.
I loved her as I loved you.
I stopped reading.
My eyes filled with tears.
Grace looked down at her hands.
“I always wondered if she loved me.””
I reached across the table.
“She did.””
Grace pressed her lips together.
I continued.
There is something else you must understand.
The trust was not created to make either of you wealthy. It was created to protect both of you from people who believed money gave them ownership over others.
Robert Carter wanted Grace to receive his inheritance. He also wanted the properties he had acquired with my family's investment to remain protected.
Patricia agreed to certain conditions, but she never intended to honor them.
If Daniel or Vanessa ever approaches you with documents, do not sign anything.
And if they tell you that your marriage gives them rights to your property, remember this: your marriage was never supposed to give them access to your mother's estate.
I lowered the letter.
“Did you know about Daniel and me?””
Grace nodded.
“Your mother told me about you. She said you were happy, and she didn't want to interfere.””
“Why didn't she contact me?””
“She tried once.””
I looked up.
“When?””
“About eight years ago. She sent me a letter asking whether I wanted to meet you.””
“What happened?””
Grace's eyes filled.
“Patricia intercepted it.””
I felt anger rising in my chest.
“She had no right.””
“No. She didn't.””
Grace reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small USB drive.
“There's more.””
“What is it?””
“Records from the adoption attorney. Emails. Financial statements. And a recording.””
I stared at the device.
“Of whom?””
“Daniel and Vanessa.””
My throat tightened.
“What are they saying?””
Grace looked directly at me.
“They discuss your marriage. Your mother's trust. And the plan to use your house as collateral.””
I took the USB drive.
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
“I tried. Vanessa had an attorney contact me and threaten a lawsuit over confidential business information. Then someone broke into my apartment.””
“Did they take anything?””
“No. They left a note.””
She pulled a folded piece of paper from her handbag.
I opened it.
Three words were written in black ink.
*Stop asking questions.*
My stomach twisted.
I looked at Grace.
“Have you told anyone else about the recording?””
“No.””
“Elaine?””
“She knows I have it. She hasn't heard it.””
I put the USB drive inside my purse.
“Then we need to make copies.””
Grace nodded.
Before we could stand, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I let it ring.
A text arrived immediately.
*Daniel:* I know you're with Grace. Come home. We can settle this without involving lawyers.
Then another.
*Daniel:* Vanessa is willing to return the money.
I stared at the screen.
“Return the money?”” I whispered.
Grace leaned forward.
“What?””
I showed her the message.
She read it and shook her head.
“That's not what they're afraid of.””
“Then what?””
Grace looked toward the hotel entrance.
A black SUV had just pulled into the parking lot.
The same vehicle from the coffee shop.
My stomach dropped.
“That's the car.””
Grace's face went pale.
“Did you tell anyone you were coming here?””
“No.””
The SUV stopped directly in front of the lobby.
A man stepped out.
He wore a dark jacket and held a brown envelope.
He looked through the glass.
Then he raised his phone and called someone.
My phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID showed Patricia Carter.
I answered.
Her voice was unusually calm.
“Nia, darling. I know you're with Grace.””
I didn't respond.
Patricia continued.
“You need to listen carefully. That woman has been lying to you.””
I looked at Grace.
“What do you want?””
“I want to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“From your own family?””
“From a truth you aren't ready to hear.””
“I'm listening.””
Patricia paused.
Then she said something that made Grace cover her mouth.
“Grace isn't the only child Robert had.””
I stared at the phone.
“What?””
“There was another baby. A boy.””
Grace shook her head violently.
Patricia's voice grew softer.
“And Daniel knows exactly where he is.””
The call ended.
I looked at Grace.
She was crying now.
“What?”” I whispered.
Grace reached for my hand.
“Because I know where he is too.””
She took a breath.
Then she gave me the name.
“Your husband.””
My entire body went cold.
Daniel wasn't Robert's biological son.
He was Patricia's son.
But if Grace was Robert's daughter, and Daniel had been raised as Robert's son, what had Patricia been hiding all these years?
Grace leaned closer.
“Your mother discovered the truth before your wedding.””
I stared at her.
“What truth?””
Grace's voice trembled.
May you like
“Daniel and I have the same father.””
And suddenly, the photograph, the secret adoption, the forged documents, and fourteen years of lies became something far more disturbing than a stolen fortune.
