Chapter 5: The Child We Were Told We Lost

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The city noise disappeared.

The people walking past us disappeared.

Even Daniel’s voice calling my name disappeared.

All I could hear was that sentence repeating in my mind.

*She wasn’t the only child born that night.*

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“No,” I whispered.

The man on the other end was silent.

Like he knew those two letters carried more weight than an entire conversation.

“No,” I said again, louder this time.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emily?””

I looked at him.

His face was filled with confusion.

Fear.

And a question he was afraid to ask.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know how.

How could I explain something I had spent years believing was impossible?

How could I tell the man I once loved that the worst day of our lives might have been built on a lie?

The voice on the phone spoke again.

“Emily, I know this is overwhelming.””

“Who are you?”” I demanded.

“My name is Michael.””

The name meant nothing.

Not at first.

Then something clicked.

Sarah.

A memory.

A conversation I barely remembered.

A name she mentioned once, years ago.

“Michael?””

Daniel looked at me.

“You know him?””

“No.””

But my voice betrayed me.

Because I recognized the name.

The man continued.

“Sarah told me you would react this way.””

My heart pounded.

“You knew Sarah?””

“Yes.””

“Who are you to her?””

A pause.

Then:

“I was her brother.””

I froze.

Daniel stared at me.

“Her brother?””

I nodded slowly.

I had known Sarah for almost a decade.

And somehow, I had never heard about a brother.

Not once.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

“No,” Michael said.

“What’s impossible is what happened the night your daughter was born.””

My legs felt weak.

I looked toward the flower shop.

Lily was watching us.

She didn’t understand.

She just saw adults with worried faces.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“An hour away.””

“Why are you calling now?””

“Because Daniel found you.””

My stomach dropped.

“How do you know that?””

“Because Sarah left instructions.””

The word made me uneasy.

Instructions.

Like she knew something would happen after she was gone.

“She knew this day would come?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because Sarah spent years trying to fix what was done.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What was done?””

Another pause.

“Emily, I can’t explain everything over the phone.””

“Then explain something.””

My voice cracked.

“Was my baby alive?””

Daniel heard those words.

His expression changed instantly.

“Emily…”

I couldn’t look at him.

The silence from the phone was unbearable.

Then Michael finally spoke.

“Yes.””

The world stopped.

Just for a second.

One impossible second.

“Yes.””

My hand covered my mouth.

A sound escaped me.

Not quite a sob.

Not quite a gasp.

Something between them.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“What did he say?””

I looked at him.

And I saw the same fear I felt.

Because somehow, without hearing the answer, he already knew.

“Daniel…”

My voice broke.

“I don’t know how to say this.””

His face went pale.

“Say what?””

I looked at Lily.

At the little girl holding the photograph of a baby.

At the child Sarah trusted me to protect.

Then I looked back at Daniel.

“The doctors were wrong.””

His eyes widened.

“No.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

Like the word itself physically hurt him.

“Our baby…”

I couldn’t finish.

Because I still couldn’t believe it.

The baby we buried in our hearts.

The baby we mourned.

The baby we thought we would never meet.

Might have lived.

Might have grown.

Might have been standing in front of us all along.

Daniel shook his head.

“This isn’t possible.””

Michael’s voice came through the phone.

“I know you don’t want to believe it.””

Daniel looked at the phone.

“Who are you?””

“Daniel?””

The man said his name calmly.

And Daniel froze.

“How do you know my name?””

“Because Sarah told me everything.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“She told you about me?””

“She told me about both of you.””

I watched Daniel struggle.

Because this wasn’t just a secret.

This was the foundation of his entire life.

Every memory.

Every painful birthday.

Every empty room.

Every night he thought about the daughter he lost.

“What happened that night?”” Daniel asked.

His voice was barely steady.

Michael exhaled.

“The hospital made a mistake.””

My heart raced.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

“There were two babies.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

I held my breath.

“Twins.””

The word echoed.

Twins.

A word that should have changed our lives.

A word that should have been written in medical records.

A word that should have been told to us by doctors.

But it wasn’t.

“Why didn’t we know?”” Daniel whispered.

“Because one of the babies was transferred.””

My hand went cold.

“Transferred where?””

“Another hospital.””

“Why?””

Silence.

Then Michael answered.

“Because the second baby was in danger.””

I looked at Lily.

A horrible thought entered my mind.

No.

It couldn’t be.

But my heart already knew.

“Sarah knew?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

“Sarah knew my baby was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Michael didn’t answer.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

“Why?”” I repeated.

Finally, he said:

“Because Sarah was trying to protect her.””

“Protect who?””

The answer came quietly.

“Your daughter.””

I looked at Lily.

The little girl who had become my entire world.

The little girl who called me Mommy.

The little girl whose bracelet belonged to a baby I thought I lost.

“No,” I whispered.

Daniel looked between us.

“Emily?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I suddenly understood.

The bracelet.

The photograph.

Sarah’s letter.

The way Lily smiled at Daniel.

The way she knew his name.

It wasn’t because Sarah had chosen me randomly.

It wasn’t because Lily needed someone.

There was something much bigger.

Something impossible.

“Michael,” I said.

“Yes?””

“Tell me the truth.””

“I’m trying.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

A pause.

Then:

“Lily is not Sarah’s daughter.””

My eyes closed.

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

Michael continued.

“Sarah raised her for years.””

I felt dizzy.

“But she wasn’t born to Sarah.””

“Then who?””

The silence was long.

Too long.

And then:

“Emily.””

I waited.

“Lily is your daughter.””

Everything inside me broke.

I dropped the phone.

Daniel caught it before it hit the ground.

But I barely noticed.

Because Lily was standing there.

Looking at me.

Confused.

“Mommy?””

That word.

That one word.

It destroyed every wall I had built.

I had spent months telling myself I was only protecting her.

That I was only helping a child who needed me.

That I wasn’t replacing the daughter I lost.

But now…

Now the impossible truth was standing in front of me.

My daughter.

My baby.

The child I thought I buried.

The child I thought I would never hold.

Daniel stared at me.

His face was full of pain.

“Emily…”

I couldn’t look at him.

“I didn’t know.””

The words came out broken.

“I swear, Daniel. I didn’t know.””

He looked at Lily.

Then at the phone in his hand.

Then back at me.

“You thought she was Sarah’s daughter?””

“Yes.””

“And you never knew?””

“No.””

His eyes filled.

Not with anger.

With grief.

A grief so deep it looked like it had no bottom.

“We had a daughter.””

I nodded.

Tears fell before I could stop them.

“Yes.””

“And we lost her.””

I shook my head slowly.

“No.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

Because saying it out loud made it real.

“We were wrong.””

Neither of us moved.

Then Lily walked toward us.

She looked up at Daniel.

“Are you crying?””

Daniel immediately wiped his face.

“No.””

She tilted her head.

“You are.””

A broken laugh escaped him.

The first real emotion I had seen from him in months.

“I guess I am.””

She reached up.

And touched his hand.

A simple gesture.

A child comforting the father she didn’t know was her father.

Daniel looked at her.

Like he was seeing her for the first time.

Then Lily said something that made my heart stop.

“Mommy Sarah said you would be scared.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“She said you would think it was your fault.””

His face changed.

Because those were not the words of a child.

Those were Sarah’s words.

“She said…”

Lily looked at me.

Then back at Daniel.

“She said you have to stop punishing yourself.””

Daniel turned away.

And for the first time, I saw him cry.

Not the quiet tears he hid.

Not the pain he swallowed.

Real tears.

Years of grief finally escaping.

I wanted to hold him.

I wanted to tell him everything would be okay.

But I couldn’t.

Not yet.

Because there was still one question.

One question that terrified me.

If Lily was our daughter…

May you like

Why had Sarah spent years hiding her from us?

And why did Michael sound like he was afraid of the answer?
