Chapter 8: The Father Who Was Never Gone

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Not me.

Not Daniel.

Not even Richard.

The only sound was Lily’s quiet breathing as she held Daniel’s hand, completely unaware that the world around her had just changed again.

“My father is dead.””

Daniel said it slowly.

Like he needed to hear himself say it.

Like repeating it would make it true.

Richard looked at him.

“I know what you were told.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You don’t understand.””

“My father died in a car accident.””

Richard didn’t blink.

“That’s what the report said.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“And you’re telling me it was a lie?””

“Yes.””

A bitter laugh escaped Daniel.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“I expect you to remember.””

That stopped him.

Daniel’s expression shifted.

Because there was something about that sentence.

Something personal.

Something that reached beyond a stranger telling him a story.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked at me.

Then at Lily.

“Sarah spent years trying to find proof.””

“Proof of what?”” I asked.

“That Daniel’s father was involved.””

The words felt impossible.

Daniel shook his head.

“My father had nothing to do with this.””

“You believe that because you loved him.””

The anger returned to Daniel’s face.

“Don’t talk about my family like you know them.””

Richard’s expression didn’t change.

“I knew them better than you think.””

Silence.

Daniel stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked away.

“Your father wasn’t just a businessman.””

My stomach tightened.

“What was he?””

Richard hesitated.

Then:

“He was one of the people who controlled the hospital.””

Daniel froze.

I saw it.

The smallest reaction.

A memory.

A connection.

“You knew?””

I asked quietly.

Daniel looked at me.

“I knew he donated money.””

Richard nodded.

“More than money.””

Daniel looked confused.

“He was on the hospital board.””

The words hit harder.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The hospital.

The records.

The missing information.

The impossible mistake.

“You’re saying my father changed the records?””

Richard looked at him.

“I’m saying your father had the power to make sure nobody asked questions.””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

But this time, the word sounded different.

Not anger.

Denial.

The kind people use when the truth hurts too much.

“My father loved children.””

Richard’s face softened.

“Maybe he did.””

“Then why?””

“Because people can love something and still do terrible things.””

Daniel looked away.

And I saw something break inside him.

Because no matter what happened between us, Daniel had always admired his father.

He built his entire life around becoming someone his father would be proud of.

If Richard was telling the truth…

Daniel wasn’t just losing his past.

He was losing the person he thought he knew.

Lily tugged his hand.

“Daddy?””

The word stopped all of us.

Daniel looked down.

A tear escaped before he could hide it.

Because that was the first time she had called him that.

Not Daniel.

Not a stranger.

Daddy.

He looked at her like the word itself was a gift he didn’t deserve.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Lily frowned.

“Why?””

Daniel knelt down.

“I just am.””

She studied his face.

Then she reached up and wiped his cheek.

“You’re sad.””

He smiled sadly.

“Yeah.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

Then at Richard.

Then back at her.

“Because I missed a lot.””

Lily thought about that.

Then she said something only a child could say.

“You can start now.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

And for a moment, he looked like the broken man from years ago.

But this time, he wasn’t alone.

I looked away.

Because watching him with her hurt.

Not because I was jealous.

Because I was mourning.

Seven years.

Seven years stolen from all of us.

Richard cleared his throat.

“We need to move.””

Daniel stood.

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“I’m done running.””

Richard looked at him.

“You think this is about running?””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“This is about finding out what happened.””

Richard studied him.

Then nodded slightly.

“Good.””

That surprised me.

“You believe him?””

I asked Daniel quietly.

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Honest.

That was new.

“But I know one thing.””

“What?””

He looked at Lily.

“I’m not letting anyone take her away again.””

The word again hurt.

Because he knew.

Somebody already had.

We drove to a small house outside the city.

Richard called it a temporary location.

I called it another secret.

But this time, I wasn’t the only one asking questions.

Daniel sat across from Richard at the kitchen table.

Lily was in the living room, drawing with colored pencils.

Every few seconds, Daniel looked over at her.

Like he needed proof she was still there.

“Start from the beginning,” Daniel said.

Richard nodded.

“Your father discovered the mistake shortly after Lily was born.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“And?””

“He realized there would be consequences.””

“For who?””

“For him.””

Richard folded his hands.

“If the hospital admitted they lost a child’s records, there would be an investigation.””

Daniel stared.

“And he covered it up.””

“Yes.””

“Why hide my daughter?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because your father believed he was protecting you.””

Daniel laughed.

“Protecting me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Richard looked toward Lily.

“Your father believed your family couldn’t survive another scandal.””

My expression changed.

“What scandal?””

Richard went quiet.

Daniel noticed.

“What scandal?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I stood.

“Don’t do that.””

Everyone looked at me.

“For years, everyone decided what I could handle.””

My voice shook.

“Doctors.””

“Sarah.””

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“I’m done being protected from my own life.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

And I knew he understood.

Richard nodded.

“Your pregnancy wasn’t supposed to be public.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because your father had arranged something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“He had planned for you to inherit his company.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that have to do with my daughter?””

“Everything.””

Richard leaned forward.

“He was afraid your marriage would become complicated.””

Daniel stared.

“My marriage?””

“Yes.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your father knew you and Emily were struggling after the loss.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“Everyone knew.””

The sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

Everyone saw us falling apart.

Everyone except us.

Richard continued.

“He thought grief made you weak.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“So he decided to control everything.””

“Yes.””

“And Lily?””

Richard looked down.

“When he discovered there was another child, he saw a problem.””

“A problem?””

Daniel’s voice was dangerous.

Richard nodded.

“He believed the child would change your priorities.””

The room went silent.

Because we both understood.

Daniel’s father didn’t see Lily as a person.

He saw her as an obstacle.

A threat to a plan.

“And Sarah?”” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“She found out.””

“How?””

“She was working with hospital staff.””

“Why?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because after losing her own baby, she started asking questions.””

I swallowed.

“She found Lily.””

“Yes.””

“And she kept her safe.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Why didn’t she tell us?””

Richard’s expression became painful.

“Because the day she planned to tell you…”

He stopped.

Daniel leaned forward.

“What?””

Richard looked at him.

“Your father threatened her.””

The room went completely still.

“What did he say?””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“He told her if she revealed the truth, Emily and the baby would never be safe.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“He threatened me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel stood so quickly the chair moved backward.

“My father threatened my wife?””

Richard nodded.

“And Sarah believed him.””

Daniel looked toward Lily.

His daughter.

The child he never knew existed.

The child everyone had fought over.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Because nobody in that house had given out the number.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Unknown caller.

Richard’s face changed.

“Don’t answer.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

Richard whispered:

“Because if they can call you…”

A pause.

His eyes moved to Lily.

“They already know where we are.””

The phone continued ringing.

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then accepted the call.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

A voice that made my blood run cold.

“Daniel.””

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Everyone knew that voice.

The voice of a man who was supposed to be buried.

“Dad?””

The line went silent.

Then the man answered:

“I think it’s time we talked about your daughter.””
