Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Our Daughter Was Alive

The second I saw him smile, I knew.

This wasn’t a coincidence.

It wasn’t a stranger looking at us.

It wasn’t my imagination.

For months, I had wondered if the fear following me was only inside my own head.

The shadows outside my apartment.

The unfamiliar car parked near my doctor’s office.

The feeling that someone was watching whenever I took Lily to the park.

I had told myself I was exhausted.

I had told myself illness and fear had made me paranoid.

But now Daniel was standing beside me.

And he saw him too.

“Who is that?”” Daniel asked.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

I looked at the black car across the street.

The man inside didn’t look away.

“He knows her.””

Daniel followed my eyes.

“Who?””

I swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

But that wasn’t completely true.

I knew his face.

I just didn’t know his name.

And that frightened me even more.

The man opened the car door.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Like he wasn’t worried about anyone stopping him.

Daniel immediately moved in front of Lily.

A protective instinct I had never seen from him before.

Not because he didn’t care before.

Because before, he thought there was nothing left to protect.

Now there was.

Now his daughter was standing behind him.

The little girl who had his eyes.

His stubborn little expression.

His habit of tilting her head when she was confused.

I noticed all of it.

Things I had spent years avoiding noticing.

The man crossed the street.

His shoes clicked against the pavement.

Every step made my heartbeat louder.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“Stay with Lily.””

The words surprised me.

Because they sounded like the old Daniel.

The man who would run toward danger before letting someone else face it.

But they also sounded different.

He wasn’t trying to control the situation.

He was protecting us.

The man stopped a few feet away.

“Emily.””

Hearing my name from him made my stomach tighten.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You know my wife?””

The man looked at him.

Then smiled slightly.

“Your wife?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She is my wife.””

The man glanced at me.

“Not anymore, apparently.””

Anger flashed across Daniel’s face.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored the question.

His eyes moved past Daniel.

Toward Lily.

And the way he looked at her made every protective instinct inside me wake up.

Not affection.

Not kindness.

Recognition.

Like he was looking at something he had spent years searching for.

“Lily,” he said softly.

The little girl grabbed my hand.

She hid behind me.

Because children know.

They always know when someone feels unsafe.

“Who are you?”” Daniel repeated.

The man finally looked at him.

“My name is Richard.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Daniel reacted.

Not strongly.

Not obviously.

Just a small change.

A flicker.

“You know him?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Richard smiled.

“Of course he does.””

Daniel stared.

“No.””

Richard tilted his head.

“You don’t remember me?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I’ve never seen you before.””

“That’s the problem.””

The street felt colder.

Richard looked at Lily.

“She was never supposed to be found.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What did you say?””

Richard didn’t seem concerned.

“That’s why I’m here.””

My heart raced.

“To take her?””

The man looked at me.

“No.””

His answer came too quickly.

Almost too easily.

“Then why?””

Richard looked around.

People were beginning to notice the tension.

A woman near the bakery slowed down.

A man across the street looked over.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Because you don’t understand what you’ve uncovered.””

Daniel laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“Really?””

He pointed toward Lily.

“You mean my daughter?””

Richard’s eyes moved to him.

“Yes.””

The word hit Daniel.

But Richard continued.

“You think finding her fixes everything.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“I think finding her means I finally know what happened.””

Richard looked at me.

“And that’s exactly why you’re in danger.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Sarah was right.””

At the mention of her name, Daniel froze.

“What do you know about Sarah?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“You knew her.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Richard looked at Lily.

“She came to me before she died.””

My breathing stopped.

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would Sarah come to you?””

Richard’s expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something other than confidence.

Regret.

“Because she knew she made a mistake.””

The words cut through me.

“What mistake?””

Richard looked at Lily.

“Keeping the truth hidden.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re saying Sarah was wrong?””

“I’m saying Sarah was afraid.””

“Afraid of who?””

Richard looked directly at Daniel.

“People you trusted.””

The answer made Daniel angry.

“Stop speaking in riddles.””

“I’m not.””

“Then tell us.””

Richard looked around again.

“Not here.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t get to show up after seven years and tell us to follow you.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“I expected you to say that.””

“Then you know what happens next.””

“What?””

“I call the police.””

Richard didn’t react.

“Go ahead.””

Daniel frowned.

“That’s your response?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because by the time they arrive, the people who actually matter will already know Lily is here.””

Silence.

My blood ran cold.

“What people?””

Richard looked at me.

“The same people Sarah was running from.””

I felt sick.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The fear.

The secrecy.

The way Sarah had protected Lily.

The way Michael had hesitated.

This was bigger than a hospital mistake.

Bigger than a hidden child.

“Who are they?”” I asked.

Richard’s expression softened slightly.

“Emily, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Sarah didn’t hide Lily because she wanted to keep her from you.””

I swallowed.

“Then why?””

“Because she found out someone wanted your daughter gone.””

Daniel went still.

“Gone?””

Richard nodded.

“And Sarah knew they wouldn’t stop.””

A gust of wind moved through the street.

Lily pressed closer to me.

“Mommy?””

I looked down.

“Yes?””

“Can we go home?””

The question broke my heart.

Because home was no longer simple.

The apartment where I raised her.

The place where I kept her safe.

The place where I thought we were alone.

Someone had found us there before.

Maybe they had always known.

Daniel looked at me.

“We need to leave.””

I nodded.

For once, we agreed without arguing.

Richard stepped back.

“Good.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re coming with us.””

It wasn’t a question.

Richard hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Okay.””

We walked quickly.

Daniel stayed close to Lily.

At first, she seemed confused.

She kept looking between us.

But slowly, she reached for his hand.

And Daniel took it.

The sight nearly destroyed me.

Because I knew what that moment meant.

Seven years too late.

But finally happening.

A father holding his daughter’s hand.

As we reached my car, my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

And immediately felt the world tilt.

A picture.

Of Lily.

Taken yesterday.

At the park.

My hands started shaking.

Someone had been watching her.

Underneath the picture was a message.

*You should have left the past buried.*

Daniel saw my face.

“What is it?””

I showed him.

His expression changed instantly.

Richard looked over my shoulder.

And for the first time, the confident man looked afraid.

“Where did you get that?””

“Who sent it?”” Daniel demanded.

Richard didn’t answer.

“Who sent it?”” Daniel repeated.

Richard looked at Lily.

Then at the message.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“The person Sarah was trying to escape from.””

A cold silence followed.

“Who?”” I asked.

Richard’s face went pale.

Then he said the name.

A name I never expected.

A name that changed everything.

“Daniel’s father.””

Daniel froze.

“My father died five years ago.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

May you like

He looked at him.

“He wanted you to believe that.””
