Chapter 4: The Lie My Wife Told

“Michael didn't disappear because someone came after him,” Vanessa said.

“He disappeared because he was running from the consequences of what he'd done.””

Michael's face tightened.

“That's not what happened.””

Vanessa ignored him. She walked toward the kitchen island, set her phone beside the grocery bag, and folded her arms as if she were preparing to explain an overdue bill rather than dismantle a family.

“Daniel, your brother wasn't the man you remember. Before he vanished, he was involved in something dangerous. He borrowed money.

He lied to people. And when things went wrong, he left everyone else to clean up the mess.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Where did you get this information?””

“From people who knew him.””

“Names, Vanessa. Give me names.””

She hesitated.

Michael let out a tired laugh.

“There it is.””

Vanessa snapped her head toward him.

“What?””

“You still can't tell a straight story without leaving out the person who matters.””

She grabbed a glass from the counter and filled it with water. Her hand shook enough to send droplets across the polished surface.

“I'm trying to protect this family.””

Michael leaned forward.

“No. You're trying to make sure he never asks the right questions.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Both of you, stop.””

Lily stood near the dining table, hugging herself. Daniel glanced at her and softened his voice.

“Sweetheart, go sit in the living room. Keep the door open. I'll come get you in a minute.””

“But, Daddy—”

“I promise. You're not in trouble.””

Lily reluctantly walked away, looking back at Michael before disappearing from view.

Daniel turned to Vanessa.

“Tell me exactly what you know about my brother.””

She lifted her chin.

“I know that three years ago, he came to our house while you were away. He was desperate. He wanted money. I refused to give it to him, and he left.””

Michael's eyes widened.

“You said you'd never tell him.””

Vanessa went still.

Daniel looked at her.

“What did he just say?””

“Nothing,” she replied quickly.

Michael pushed his chair back.

“You told me you would keep that night between us.””

Vanessa slammed her palm against the island.

“Because you promised you would leave!””

The words hung in the bright kitchen.

Daniel felt something cold settle in his stomach.

“You two knew each other before he disappeared.””

Vanessa looked away.

Michael nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since before you went to Chicago that first time,” Michael said.

Daniel stared at his wife.

“You knew my missing brother personally, and you never told me?””

“I barely knew him,” Vanessa said.

“He came here because he wanted something from me.””

“What did he want?””

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

Michael answered for her.

“He wanted me to tell you the truth.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“What truth?””

Michael's expression shifted. For a moment, he looked like the older brother who used to sit on Daniel's bedroom floor and explain how the world worked. Then that familiar warmth disappeared beneath the exhaustion.

“Three years ago, I found out someone had been using your name.””

Daniel frowned.

“My name for what?””

“Financial accounts. Documents. Transactions you never approved.””

Vanessa shook her head vigorously.

“That's a lie.””

Michael didn't look at her.

“I had proof. I was coming to tell you, but before I could, someone warned me to stay away from you.””

“Who warned you?””

“I don't know. The message came from a number I couldn't trace.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“This makes no sense. Why didn't you go to the police?””

“I tried.””

“And?””

Michael looked down at his wrists.

“The officer I spoke to knew things about me that I'd never told him. He knew where I lived, where I'd worked, and where I'd be staying that night. He told me that if I kept asking questions, you and your family would get hurt.””

Vanessa gave a disbelieving laugh.

“So now you're inventing a conspiracy?””

Michael turned toward her.

“You remember the blue envelope.””

Vanessa's face changed.

It was subtle, but Daniel saw it. The slight parting of her lips. The way her eyes moved toward the hallway. The fingers that suddenly curled around the edge of the island.

“What blue envelope?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa answered too quickly.

“I don't know what he's talking about.””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“It was delivered here the night I disappeared. I left it under the kitchen clock.””

Daniel glanced at the clock above the refrigerator.

He had bought it with Vanessa during their first year of marriage. It had hung there for nearly a decade.

“Why would you leave evidence in our house?””

“Because I thought I could trust someone here.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“You had no right to bring your problems into my home!””

Michael slowly stood.

“Your home?”” he repeated.

“That's interesting.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Michael opened his mouth.

A sudden crash came from the living room.

“Lily?”” Daniel shouted.

He ran through the doorway.

His daughter stood beside the sofa, a framed photograph lying face down on the carpet. She was staring at the front window.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

Daniel crouched beside her.

“What happened?””

“Someone's outside.””

He looked through the glass.

A dark sedan sat at the curb across the street. Its engine was running. The driver's window was open, but the bright afternoon glare made the occupant difficult to distinguish.

Daniel stood and moved closer to the window.

The car pulled away.

By the time he reached the front door, it had turned the corner.

He returned to the kitchen with Lily's hand in his.

Vanessa was standing beside Michael, whispering something Daniel couldn't hear.

They separated the instant he entered.

Daniel stopped.

“What were you two talking about?””

“Nothing,” Vanessa said.

Michael looked toward the back door.

Then he spoke so quietly that Daniel almost missed it.

“The blue envelope wasn't the only thing I left here.””

Daniel tightened his grip on Lily's hand.

“What else?””

May you like

Michael met his eyes.

“Something that proves your wife knew I was going to disappear.””
