Chapter 6: The Price of Three Years

Daniel stared at Michael as if he had become a stranger.

“You took money to disappear?””

Michael nodded once.

Vanessa let out a shaky breath, then immediately tried to compose herself.

“There. You see? I told you he was hiding something.””

Daniel raised a hand without looking at her.

“Don't.””

She fell silent.

He turned back to Michael.

“How much?””

Michael rubbed his face.

“Enough to get me out of town. Enough to make sure nobody asked questions for a while.””

“How much, Michael?””

“Fifty thousand dollars.””

Daniel felt sick.

“And you accepted it?””

“I thought I could use it to protect you.””

“You protected me by making me believe you were dead?””

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

“I was told that if I contacted you, the people involved would come after you. They knew where you worked. They knew where Lily went to school. They knew everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You could have called from another state. You could have sent a letter. You could have gone to the police again.””

“I tried to find a safe way back.””

“Three years, Michael!””

“I know!””

Michael's voice cracked so sharply that Lily appeared in the kitchen doorway.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately lowered his voice.

“It's okay, sweetheart.””

But Lily looked at her uncle.

“Uncle Michael, did someone make you leave?””

Michael knelt slowly, wincing as his knees touched the floor.

“Yes, baby.””

“Were you scared?””

He looked at her small, worried face.

“Every day.””

Lily stepped forward and hugged him.

Michael buried his face against her shoulder and began to cry.

Daniel looked away, struggling to contain the anger and grief fighting inside him. He wanted to embrace his brother. He wanted to shake him. He wanted three years of unanswered questions to become something he could understand.

Instead, he stood motionless while Lily held the man everyone had told her was dead.

Vanessa cleared her throat.

“This is emotional manipulation. He knows exactly how to make people feel sorry for him.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Then help me understand the evidence.””

She folded her arms.

“I've already told you. I had nothing to do with his disappearance.””

“Your name is on the account. You knew he was coming here. You knew about the envelope. Now you're telling me you know what happened to him.””

“I know what he told me!””

Michael gently released Lily.

“That's not true.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“You want to destroy me because you couldn't live with what you did.””

Michael rose slowly.

“No. I want Daniel to know what happened.””

He turned toward his brother.

“The money wasn't a gift. It was payment for my silence. I accepted it because I believed the threat against you was real. But I never spent most of it.””

Daniel frowned.

“Where is it?””

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

Michael hesitated.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course. There's always another secret.””

Michael ignored her.

“I kept the money because I knew someday I'd have to prove where it came from. I thought if I held on to it, I could trace the person who paid me.””

Daniel pulled the flash drive from his pocket.

“Will these files tell me?””

“They'll show you who accessed the account, who moved the money, and who communicated with the person who arranged my disappearance.””

Daniel glanced toward the laptop on the kitchen counter.

He carried it to the table, connected the flash drive, and waited.

A folder appeared.

Inside were spreadsheets, scanned documents, and several audio files.

Michael leaned over his shoulder.

“Open the folder marked ‘Authorization.’”

Daniel clicked it.

The screen filled with scanned forms. He opened the first document, then the second. The signatures looked convincing, but the dates didn't line up with his travel records.

One document carried his electronic approval on a day he had been in a meeting across the country.

“Someone forged my signature,” he whispered.

Michael nodded.

“Keep going.””

Daniel opened another file.

This one contained an email chain between two addresses. One belonged to Michael. The other was an unfamiliar account with no full name attached.

The first message was brief.

The funds must be transferred before Daniel returns.

The reply came several hours later.

And Michael?

The response chilled Daniel.

He won't be a problem after tonight.

Daniel leaned back.

“Oh, my God.””

Vanessa stepped toward the laptop.

“Close it.””

Daniel kept reading.

A second message included a scanned payment receipt. The sender's details had been partly obscured, but the account number was visible.

Michael pointed at the screen.

“That's the account the money came from.””

Daniel opened the banking document beside it.

The account belonged to a company registered under a name he recognized.

He stared at the screen.

“No.””

Michael looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“This company was dissolved five years ago.””

“Who owned it?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately. He clicked another attachment, revealing an old corporate registration document.

The company had been registered to their father.

Daniel felt his hands go cold.

Their father had died years before the transaction. The business had been closed, its accounts supposedly settled. Yet someone had used it to move money and pay Michael to vanish.

“Dad's company shouldn't have existed anymore,” Daniel said.

Michael nodded.

“That's why I kept digging.””

Vanessa pressed both hands against the edge of the table.

“Your father had debts. There were things you never knew about him.””

Daniel looked up.

“What debts?””

“He made mistakes.””

“What mistakes?””

She looked at Michael, then back at Daniel.

“Your father wasn't the man you thought he was.””

Michael shook his head.

“Don't use a dead man to cover your own tracks.””

Vanessa's eyes blazed.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed to keep this family together!””

Daniel rose.

“Then tell me!””

Her lips trembled. For a moment, she looked as if she might finally confess.

Instead, she reached for the laptop.

Daniel blocked her hand.

“Don't touch it.””

Vanessa stepped back, breathing hard.

Michael pointed to the last audio file.

“There is one more thing. I saved it because I thought you should hear it yourself.””

Daniel hesitated before clicking play.

Static crackled through the laptop speakers.

Then a man's voice emerged, low and deliberate.

“Michael, you have until midnight. Take the money, leave town, and never contact Daniel again.””

A pause.

Michael's recorded voice answered.

“What happens if I refuse?””

The unknown man replied.

“Then your brother will learn what his wife has been doing behind his back.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

He slowly turned toward Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

The recording continued.

Michael's voice sounded younger, desperate.

“What does Vanessa have to do with any of this?””

The unknown man laughed softly.

“Everything.””

Daniel stared at the laptop.

Michael reached toward the keyboard, but Daniel caught his wrist.

“No. Let it play.””

The recording crackled again.

Then the man spoke the words that shattered what remained of Daniel's certainty.

“Ask your brother why Vanessa was the first person to know you were going to disappear.””

The audio ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Lily whispered from the doorway, “Daddy?””

Daniel turned toward her.

She was holding a small envelope in both hands.

“I found this in Mommy's purse,” she said.

“I wasn't trying to look. It fell out when she put her phone down.””

Vanessa lunged toward her.

“Lily, give that to me!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Stay back.””

He took the envelope from his daughter.

His name was written across the front in handwriting he recognized immediately.

Inside was a single sheet of paper and a photograph.

The photograph showed Vanessa standing beside a man outside a motel, her hand resting on his arm.

The date printed in the corner was three years old.

The same night Michael had disappeared.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

Then he unfolded the letter.

There were only two sentences.

If Daniel ever learns what happened to Michael, tell him the truth about the baby.

Daniel's eyes moved to the final word.

The baby.

He looked up at his wife.

“Vanessa,” he whispered, “what baby?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

May you like

Michael closed his eyes.

And for the first time since returning home, Daniel understood that his brother's disappearance might have been only the beginning of the secret that had been buried inside his marriage.
