Chapter 7: The Baby She Never Told Me About

“What baby, Vanessa?””

Daniel's voice was barely recognizable to his own ears.

His wife stood beside the kitchen island, staring at the photograph in his hand. The bright afternoon sunlight illuminated every detail of her face: the trembling lower lip, the moisture gathering beneath her eyes, and the tiny movement in her jaw as she struggled to find an answer.

Michael remained beside the table, one hand gripping its edge.

Lily stood behind Daniel, clutching the hem of his shirt.

“Mommy?”” she whispered.

“Did you have another baby?””

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

“No, sweetheart. Go upstairs.””

Lily shook her head.

“I want to stay with Daddy.””

“Lily, I said go upstairs!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Don't shout at her.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Then stop interrogating me in front of my child!””

“Our child,” Daniel corrected.

“And she's standing here because you've turned our kitchen into a battlefield.””

He held up the photograph.

“Who is this man?””

Vanessa pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“His name was Aaron.””

Michael let out a sharp breath.

Daniel immediately turned toward him.

“You know him?””

Michael nodded.

“He was the man who arranged the payment.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No. Aaron was supposed to help me.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Help you with what?””

She looked at the photograph again.

Then, finally, she spoke.

“Three years ago, I found out I was pregnant.””

The kitchen went silent.

Daniel felt as if someone had struck him in the chest.

“Pregnant?””

Vanessa nodded, tears slipping down her cheeks.

“It was before Michael disappeared. I was terrified. Our marriage wasn't in a good place, and you were traveling constantly. I didn't know how you would react.””

Daniel struggled to speak.

“Why wouldn't you tell me?””

“Because I wasn't sure the baby was yours.””

Lily's fingers tightened around his shirt.

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

For eleven years, he had trusted this woman with every part of his life. He had sat beside her through family illnesses, held her when she cried, and worked extra hours to give their daughter a comfortable home.

Now she was telling him that, three years earlier, she had been carrying another man's child.

“Was it Aaron's?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer landed harder than he expected.

Michael looked away.

Daniel lowered the photograph onto the table.

“What happened to the baby?””

Vanessa's shoulders began to shake.

“I lost the pregnancy.””

“When?””

“Two weeks after Michael disappeared.””

Daniel stared at her.

“And you never told me?””

“I couldn't.””

“Couldn't, or didn't want to?””

She wiped her cheeks angrily.

“You think this is easy for me? You think I wanted any of this to happen?””

Daniel laughed once, without humor.

“You had a child with another man, hid it from your husband, and somehow my brother disappeared in the middle of it. Explain to me which part I'm supposed to find easy.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Aaron told me Michael was trying to destroy us. He said your brother had discovered the pregnancy and planned to use it to ruin our marriage.””

Michael shook his head.

“I never threatened you.””

“You came to my house demanding that I help you!””

“I asked you to tell Daniel about the forged documents.””

“And you said you'd expose everything!””

“Because someone was stealing from him!””

Daniel raised his hand.

“Enough.””

Both of them stopped.

He turned toward Michael.

“Did you know about the pregnancy before you disappeared?””

Michael hesitated.

“Yes.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“You knew, and you didn't tell me?””

“I was trying to find out what Aaron had to do with the stolen money. When I discovered the pregnancy, I realized he had another reason to keep you from asking questions.””

“What reason?””

Michael glanced at Vanessa.

“She told Aaron about the account. She gave him access to documents he shouldn't have had.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never gave him access to anything!””

Michael pulled a folded sheet from his jacket.

“You gave him your login details. I have the emails.””

Daniel took the paper.

The messages were short, but the dates were clear. Vanessa had sent account information to an address connected to Aaron's company. Two days later, the suspicious transfer had occurred.

Daniel felt his stomach twist.

“Did you help him steal my money?””

Vanessa's expression crumpled.

“I didn't know what he was planning.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“I thought he needed proof of something your father had done. He told me the money would be returned.””

Michael's voice hardened.

“And when you found out it wouldn't be returned, you called him.””

Vanessa looked at him with open hatred.

“You have no idea what he threatened me with.””

“Then tell us.””

She stared at the floor.

For a moment, Daniel thought she might finally explain everything.

Instead, she turned toward the back door.

“I need air.””

Daniel stepped in front of her.

“Not until you answer one question.””

She looked up.

“Did you know Aaron was going to make Michael disappear?””

“No.””

Michael's expression remained unreadable.

Vanessa's voice rose.

“I swear to you, Daniel, I didn't know they were going to hurt him. I thought they were sending him away until everything settled down.””

“Sending him away where?””

“I don't know!””

Michael looked at her.

“You signed the agreement.””

Vanessa went pale.

Daniel slowly turned toward his brother.

“What agreement?””

Michael pulled another document from the plastic bundle.

It was a single page with a signature at the bottom.

Vanessa Carter.

Beneath her signature was a handwritten sentence.

I acknowledge that Michael Carter will leave voluntarily and will not contact Daniel Carter or his family.

Daniel read it twice.

“Why would you sign this?””

Vanessa's tears fell faster.

“Because Aaron told me Michael would expose the pregnancy and destroy my marriage. He said if I signed, he would make sure Michael left without hurting anyone.””

“You helped arrange my brother's disappearance to protect your affair?””

“I was trying to protect Lily!””

Lily recoiled.

Daniel looked at his daughter, then back at Vanessa.

“Don't use her name to excuse what you did.””

Vanessa covered her face.

Michael lowered himself into the chair, looking suddenly older.

“I thought the agreement was the whole story,” he said quietly.

“Until I found something else.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“What else?””

Michael reached into his jacket and removed a small photograph, separate from the one Daniel had found in the envelope.

It showed a hospital wristband resting beside a handwritten note.

The name on the wristband was unfamiliar.

The date was three days after Vanessa claimed she had lost the pregnancy.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“Why do you have this?””

Michael's voice trembled.

“Because I found out someone had been asking questions about a child born that week.””

Vanessa abruptly stopped crying.

Daniel looked at her.

“What child?””

She backed away from the table.

“No.””

Michael looked directly at her.

“Vanessa, you need to tell him.””

“No!””

Daniel's pulse hammered.

He picked up the photograph again.

The wristband carried a hospital name and a medical record number.

At the bottom, someone had written a final message in blue ink.

The child survived.

Daniel looked up at his wife.

Vanessa's face had gone completely white.

And when she finally spoke, her words were almost inaudible.

“I was told the baby was dead.””
