Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE

I returned to the mansion.

The dining room was exactly as I remembered.

The enormous table.

The crystal lights.

The fireplace.

The marble floor.

I stood beneath the table.

I remembered the cold.

The laughter.

Evelyn's shoe.

Daniel's silence.

Then I stood.

My father entered.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Want to leave?”

“No.”

I looked around.

“I want to change this room.”

The table was removed.

The expensive furniture was donated.

The dining room became a community space.

A long wooden table replaced the old one.

No one sat at the head.

Everyone sat together.

The first Christmas after the trial, we invited families from the foundation.

Children.

Parents.

Veterans.

People who had spent years feeling unwanted.

We served dinner.

Everyone received the same plate.

I stood at the doorway.

A little girl looked up at me.

“Are you the owner?”

I smiled.

“No.”

She frowned.

“Then who is?”

I looked around the table.

“Everyone.”

She smiled.

And that was the Christmas I finally understood what the house should have been.

Not a place of power.

A place of belonging.
