Chapter 10 - DANIEL
Daniel disappeared from public life.
He moved into a small apartment.
He started working for a nonprofit.
He refused executive positions.
He gave up most of his remaining shares.
One afternoon, he came to my office.
“I need your signature.”
I read the document.
He was transferring his remaining shares to the employee trust.
“You don't have to.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“They earned them.”
I signed.
Daniel looked at me.
“Thank you.”
I closed the folder.
“Don't thank me.”
“Why?”
“Because this isn't about me.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
He stood to leave.
Then he stopped.
“Emily.”
“Yes?”
“I loved you.”
I looked at him.
“I know.”
“I just didn't know how to love someone without trying to keep them.”
“That wasn't love.”
He nodded.
“I know that now.”
He left.
I didn't cry.

I simply felt grateful that the man who had once betrayed me had finally become honest.
