Chapter 4 - THOMAS DID NOT ASK DANIEL TO CALL HIM DAD

Thomas arrived alone.
No lawyer.
No wife.
No gifts.
Sixty-nine.
Silver hair.
Same dark eyes as Daniel.
Now that I knew, resemblance was obvious.
That felt almost insulting.
How had nobody seen?
Because people see what story tells them.
Daniel met him at Samantha’s office.
I waited outside at first.
Later Daniel told me, then invited me in.
First words:
“Why?”
Thomas looked down.
“Because Robert asked me to wait until you were older.”
“You were at my college graduation.”
“Yes.”
“I was older.”
Thomas nodded.
“Then your mother begged us not to tell.”
“So you listened to her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Cowardice.”
No spin.
Then:
“I was also afraid you would hate me.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So you protected yourself.”
“Yes.”
There.
Then:
“Did you ever want custody?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Robert was your father in every practical way and I had no right to blow up your life to satisfy mine.”
That answer was both respectful and frustrating.
Then:
“Did you want relationship?”
“Every day.”
“Then why call yourself Uncle Tom?”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“Because it was the only role they allowed me.”
Then:
“You accepted.”
“Yes.”
Again.
No martyrdom.
Then Daniel asked:
“Did you love my mother?”
Thomas paused.
“At one time.”
“Did she love you?”
“I think she loved what I gave her when she felt lonely.”
Honest.
Then:
“Did Dad hate you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why keep you around?”
Thomas smiled painfully.
“Because your father had a capacity for love I did not understand when I was younger.”
Then:
“He also needed me in business.”
Human.
Not saint.
Then the business.
Robert and Thomas co-founded Carter-Vale Logistics.
Thomas later sold his interest.
No secret empire.
No paternity-linked ownership.
Then Daniel asked:
“Did you know Mom accused Claire’s baby of not being mine?”
Thomas looked shocked.
“No.”
Then anger.
“She did what?”
Daniel described.
Hair pulling.
DNA test.
Thomas sat back.
“That is…”
He stopped.
Hypocritical.
Cruel.
Then:
“She was always terrified of being exposed.”
There.
Thomas said Patricia had become obsessed with legitimacy after affair.
Any hint of infidelity in other people triggered.
Projection.
She had accused Robert’s sister once.
A cousin.
Now me.
Because if other women cheated, her own past felt less uniquely shameful.
Psychology, not excuse.
Then Thomas asked about Noah.
“May I see photo?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then showed.
Thomas smiled.
“He has your ears.”
Daniel laughed despite everything.
That was first warmth.
Then Thomas said:
“I am not asking to meet him.”
Good.
Daniel looked.
“Why not?”
“Because that is your family. You decide.”
Then:
“And I am still learning what I am to you.”
That was right.
Then Daniel asked final:
“If Robert were alive, what would he say?”
Thomas thought.
“He’d tell me to stop talking like I know.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Maybe that was Robert.
Then:
“And he’d remind you he packed every school lunch because Patricia couldn’t wake up early.”
Daniel laughed through tears.
Memory.
Biology did not erase.
Thomas did not become instant father.
He became Thomas.
A man Daniel met once a week for months.
Sometimes dinner.
Sometimes questions.
May you like
Sometimes silence.
No title yet.
