Chapter 8 - ROBERT REMAINED DAD

At first Daniel stopped saying “Dad” when talking about Robert.
He called him Robert.
It sounded wrong.
Thomas noticed.
One dinner he said:
“You know you don’t have to demote him because I exist.”
Daniel stared.
Thomas continued:
“He raised you.”
Then:
“He loved you when loving you cost him.”
That mattered.
Then Daniel said:
“What does that make you?”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“The man whose blood you have.”
Too little maybe.
Then:
“And someone who would like to know you, if you let me.”
Better.
Over time:
Thomas became Thomas.
Then maybe “Tom.”
Never Dad at first.
Years later, after Thomas surgery, Daniel accidentally said:
“Dad, sit down.”
Both froze.
Thomas cried.
Daniel said:
“Don’t make it weird.”
Callback style.
But Robert still Dad too.
Titles can multiply.
No replacement.
Then Noah grew.
At five, he knew Grandpa Robert was Daddy’s father who died, and Grandpa Tom was “another grandfather we met later.”
Age appropriate.
At twelve, fuller truth.
At eighteen, DNA story.
No secret explosion.
Then Noah asked:
“Do I have two grandpas on Dad’s side?”
Daniel said:
“Yes.”
“Cool.”
Kids often simpler.
Then Patricia?
Limited.
After two years therapy and no further boundary violations, Daniel wanted supervised contact.
I agreed cautiously.
Noah was three.
Patricia did not hold him first visits unless he approached.
She followed.
Relationship slowly rebuilt.
Not old closeness.
Then when Noah was six, he called her Grandma Patty.
She cried.
But did not make spectacle.
Growth.
Then she never discussed DNA with him without us.
