Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew the Truth
The stranger stood in the doorway like he had walked into a nightmare that belonged to him.
Snow covered the shoulders of his dark coat.
His hair was gray.
His face was older than my father’s, but his eyes were sharp.
The kind of eyes that remembered everything.
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn whispered his name.
“Marcus.””
The stranger looked at her.
And the fear returned to her face.
Not the fake fear she had shown earlier.
Real fear.
My father noticed immediately.
“You know him.””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“Yes.””
His voice was calm.
“I know her.””
Daniel stared at his mother.
“Who is he?””
Evelyn swallowed.
“Nobody.””
Marcus almost smiled.
“That’s interesting.””
He removed his coat slowly.
“After twenty years, I’m still nobody.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Mom?””
But Evelyn kept staring at Marcus.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Marcus looked around the mansion.
“The Whitmore house.””
He shook his head.
“Still the same.””
His eyes moved to the Christmas tree.
“Same decorations.””
Then to the dining table.
“Same room where Richard made his final mistake.””
A chill ran through me.
My father stepped forward.
“You were there that night.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
“When Richard died?””
Marcus nodded.
“I was there.””
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
“Then tell me.””
His voice was low.
“Tell me what happened to my father.””
Marcus looked at him.
For a moment, something softened in his expression.
“You deserve the truth.””
Evelyn suddenly moved.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
Daniel turned.
“Why?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
He stepped closer.
“Why does everyone keep telling me not to listen?””
His voice rose.
“Why does everyone know my life better than I do?””
The question hurt because it was true.
Everyone had been making decisions for Daniel.
His mother.
His father.
Even my grandfather.
They had all decided what he could handle.
What he should know.
What he should never discover.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Your father was planning to leave.””
Daniel frowned.
“Leave?””
“Yes.””
Marcus glanced at Evelyn.
“He was going to expose everything.””
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“Stop.””
Marcus ignored her.
“He had discovered that his business accounts were being drained.””
My father looked at Evelyn.
“What?””
Marcus nodded.
“Money had been moved for years.””
The room erupted in whispers.
Evelyn shook her head.
“That’s absurd.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Is it?””
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small black notebook.
“I kept this because I knew one day someone would need it.””
My father stepped closer.
“What is that?””
“Richard’s records.””
Marcus opened the notebook.
“Dates. Transfers. Names.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Your father was preparing to confront the person stealing from him.””
Daniel stared.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
That pause said everything.
My stomach tightened.
Because there was only one reason someone would hesitate.
They were protecting someone.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“She knows.””
Daniel turned slowly.
His eyes moved to his mother.
“Mom?””
Evelyn’s voice became defensive.
“I never stole anything.””
Marcus nodded.
“I didn’t say you did.””
The room went quiet.
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
“Richard discovered the money was being moved through accounts connected to someone else.””
Daniel frowned.
“Someone else?””
Marcus looked at me.
Then at my father.
Then back at Daniel.
“Someone inside the family.””
My father’s expression changed.
“No.””
Marcus opened the notebook.
“Richard wrote one final note before he died.””
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
The handwriting matched the recording.
Daniel took it.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked at me.
He looked lost.
“It says…”
His voice broke.
“It says my mother knew.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew he was going to confront someone?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
She finally spoke.
“I knew he was angry.””
“Angry?””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“He was about to die.””
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“I didn’t know that.””
Marcus interrupted.
“That’s the part you keep saying.””
Everyone looked at him.
“But Richard knew someone was planning something.””
My father stepped forward.
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
“I don’t know.””
That surprised everyone.
“You don’t know?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Richard never told me the name.””
Daniel looked frustrated.
“Then why are you here?””
Marcus stared at him.
“Because Richard told me something else.””
He reached into his coat again.
This time, he pulled out a small key.
An old brass key.
My grandfather’s name was engraved on it.
I recognized it immediately.
“That belongs to my grandfather.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“How did you get it?””
“Richard gave it to me.””
My father looked shocked.
“Richard had your father’s key?””
Marcus nodded.
“He trusted me with something.””
He looked at me.
“Something your grandfather wanted you to have.””
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Marcus walked toward me.
He placed the key in my hand.
The metal was cold.
“Your grandfather knew the truth would eventually come out.””
I looked at the key.
“Where does it open?””
Marcus looked toward the fireplace.
“Not where.””
He paused.
“When.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, Evelyn spoke.
“You need to leave.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“I said leave.””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“You still think you can command everyone.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Marcus, you have no idea what you’re doing.””
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
He looked around the room.
“I’m ending twenty years of lies.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What happened that night?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
For a moment, I thought she would finally tell the truth.
But then she did something unexpected.
She walked toward me.
Everyone reacted.
My father immediately stepped between us.
“Don’t.””
Evelyn stopped.
“I’m not going to hurt her.””
My father’s voice was cold.
“You’ve already tried.””
She looked at me.
And strangely, she didn’t look angry.
She looked tired.
“Mia.””
I didn’t answer.
“I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
She looked at the letter.
“The will.””
She pointed at the papers.
“Your grandfather didn’t leave you that estate because he loved you.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“He left it because he knew.””
My heart stopped.
“Knew what?””
She looked directly at me.
“He knew you were in danger.””
The room went quiet.
Marcus frowned.
“Evelyn.””
But she continued.
“Your grandfather spent years trying to protect you.””
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
“From who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the lights went out.
The entire mansion fell into darkness.
Someone screamed.
A glass shattered.
The room erupted into chaos.
I heard footsteps.
Fast footsteps.
Someone moving through the darkness.
Then a hand grabbed my wrist.
I tried to pull away.
“Let go of me!””
A voice whispered near my ear.
“Mia.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was Daniel.
“Don’t scream.””
I couldn’t see him.
“What are you doing?””
His grip loosened immediately.
“I’m trying to protect you.””
A moment later, the emergency lights flickered on.
Everyone was standing where they had been.
Except one person.
Marcus.
He was gone.
And on the table where the old key had been sitting…
was a new piece of paper.
My father picked it up.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
He handed it to me.
Only six words were written there.
In my grandfather’s handwriting.
May you like
My blood turned cold.
The killer is not finished yet.
