Chapter 8: The Third Child
The phone went silent.
My father held it in his hand, staring at the screen as if he expected the name to appear again.
Richard Whitmore.
A dead man’s name.
A voice from the past.
A warning that made no sense.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Third child?””
The question sounded impossible.
Like the words themselves were too heavy to accept.
Evelyn slowly sat down.
For once, she didn’t try to control the room.
She didn’t correct anyone.
She didn’t make an accusation.
She simply stared at the floor.
And that terrified me.
Because Evelyn Whitmore was a woman who always had something to say.
A defense.
An explanation.
A weapon.
But now she had nothing.
My father looked at her.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“Don’t.””
His expression hardened.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I’m done hearing that word.””
His voice shook.
“Every time I get close to the truth, you tell me not to ask.””
Evelyn looked up.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
He pointed toward the phone.
“My dead father just called me.””
Nobody corrected him.
Because nobody knew how.
“He said there is another child.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.
“And you’re sitting there acting like you already know who it is.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I do.””
The room went still.
My father’s face changed.
“You know?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“How many secrets have you been keeping?””
Evelyn looked at me.
The question hurt her.
Good.
She deserved to feel some of the damage she had caused.
But then she said something unexpected.
“I didn’t know how to fix it.””
I almost laughed.
“You had years.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
Daniel walked away.
He pressed his hands against his face.
“My entire life…”
His voice broke.
“My entire life was a lie.””
I wanted to hate him.
Part of me still did.
But seeing him standing there, destroyed by the same family that had hurt me, made everything complicated.
We were both victims of secrets.
The difference was…
I had never used my pain as an excuse to hurt someone else.
Daniel lowered his hands.
“Who is the third child?””
Nobody answered.
Then the sound of footsteps came from outside the study.
Everyone turned.
My father moved immediately.
“Stay behind me.””
The door slowly opened.
A woman stood there.
She looked around forty years old.
Dark hair.
A tired face.
And in her hand was a folder.
She looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Evelyn.
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“I think it’s time you all knew.””
Evelyn stood.
“No.””
The woman looked at her.
“You can’t stop this anymore.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
“My name is Claire Whitmore.””
Nobody moved.
She took a breath.
“And I’m your sister.””
The words hit harder than the phone call.
Daniel stared.
“No.””
Claire’s expression didn’t change.
“I know it’s difficult.””
He laughed.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No, this is impossible.””
Claire looked at me.
“I said the same thing when I found out about Mia.””
My heart stopped.
She knew me.
My father stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Claire looked at him.
“You’re Thomas Bennett.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“Richard told me about you.””
My father went silent.
Claire walked into the room.
“Twenty years ago, Richard discovered he had three children connected to three different parts of his life.””
She looked at me.
“Mia.””
Then Daniel.
“And you.””
Then herself.
“He never knew how to handle it.””
Evelyn looked away.
Claire continued.
“He made mistakes.””
Her voice softened.
“But he loved all three of us.””
Daniel looked angry.
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She glanced at Evelyn.
“Of what would happen if Evelyn lost control.””
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“I was protecting my son.””
Claire looked at her.
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“You were protecting the Whitmore name.””
The accusation landed.
Evelyn looked hurt.
But she didn’t deny it.
Claire placed the folder on my grandfather’s desk.
“Richard kept records.””
My father looked at it.
“Of what?””
“Everything.””
She opened the folder.
“Money transfers. Meetings. Conversations.””
She looked at me.
“Your grandfather helped him collect evidence.””
I frowned.
“My grandfather knew?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
That hurt.
Another secret.
Another person who knew.
Another person who decided I couldn’t handle the truth.
“When did he find out?””
Claire looked at the documents.
“The year before Richard died.””
My father’s expression changed.
“That’s why my father changed the will.””
“Yes.””
Claire nodded.
“He knew someone was trying to take control of Richard’s estate.””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“Who?””
Claire was silent.
Then she said:
“The person who benefited most.””
Everyone looked at Evelyn.
She immediately stepped back.
“No.””
Claire didn’t look at her.
“It wasn’t Evelyn.””
That surprised everyone.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
Claire turned a page.
“My father’s death was arranged by someone else.””
My father narrowed his eyes.
“Who?””
Claire looked at Daniel.
And then at me.
“The person who wanted all three of us gone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“All three?””
Claire nodded.
“Richard had planned to change his will.””
Daniel frowned.
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
Claire looked at the papers.
“Because he died before he could.””
She pointed at a document.
“He planned to divide his inheritance between his three children.””
My heart stopped.
Three children.
Me.
Daniel.
Claire.
“But someone discovered his plan.””
Claire continued.
“And that person knew if Richard died, everything would stay under the old arrangement.””
Daniel understood.
“Which meant…”
“Which meant Daniel inherited everything.””
She looked at him.
“And that made him the perfect person to control.””
Daniel went quiet.
My eyes moved toward Evelyn.
She looked devastated.
Not because she had been accused.
Because she understood.
The same thing we did.
Someone had used Daniel.
Someone had built his entire life around a lie.
Claire pulled out another document.
“This is the final message Richard left.””
My father looked at it.
“But the recording said he knew someone wanted him dead.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“But he didn’t know who.””
She handed me the paper.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The handwriting was Richard’s.
Not my grandfather’s.
If anything happens to me, look for the person who gains from my silence.
I continued.
Do not trust anyone who says they are protecting my children.
I looked at Evelyn.
She looked away.
The letter continued.
The person closest to me has already betrayed me once.
A chill went through the room.
Then the final sentence.
The person who destroyed my family is not a Whitmore by blood.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Claire’s face changed.
Like she had been waiting years to say the next words.
“It means the person who killed your father…”
She looked at my father.
Then at me.
“…is connected to the Bennett family.””
My father stepped back.
“What?””
Nobody moved.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
And my blood turned cold.
There was a picture attached.
A photograph of my mother.
Standing beside a person I recognized.
A person who should never have been connected to this story.
Underneath the picture was one sentence.
*You’re looking for Richard’s killer in the wrong generation.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Because the person standing beside my mother in that photo…
was my grandfather.
