Chapter 7: The Daughter of the Enemy

Daniel stared at the document like it was something dangerous.

Like the paper itself could destroy him.

Maybe it could.

Because some truths did not simply change your life.

They rewrote it.

My fingers felt numb.

I watched Daniel’s eyes move across the page again and again.

“No,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

His face was pale.

“This can’t be real.””

My father took the paper from him.

The moment he read the name, his entire body went still.

I had seen my father angry.

I had seen him scared.

But I had never seen him look betrayed.

Not like this.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

He just stared at the birth certificate.

“Tell me.””

His eyes slowly lifted toward me.

“Mia…”

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what it says.””

He swallowed.

Then he said the words I never expected to hear.

“Your biological father is Richard Whitmore.””

The room went silent.

Everything inside me stopped.

I laughed.

A small, confused sound.

“That’s impossible.””

Nobody responded.

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at my father.

“No, that’s not possible.””

My father looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.””

I stepped back.

“You didn’t know?””

The pain in my voice made him flinch.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Your mother never told me.””

My heart pounded.

My mother.

A woman who had been gone for twelve years.

A woman who had taken secrets to her grave.

I looked at the document again.

Richard Whitmore.

The man whose death had destroyed a family.

The man whose name was now written beside mine.

Daniel looked at me.

His eyes were filled with disbelief.

“You’re saying…”

He stopped.

He couldn’t finish.

I could.

“I’m his daughter.””

The words sounded like they belonged to someone else.

Daniel sat down slowly.

“My entire life…”

He looked away.

“My sister?””

The question hurt.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it was complicated.

I didn’t know what I was.

Who I was.

Where I belonged.

My father immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel looked up.

My father’s voice was firm.

“Mia is my daughter.””

I looked at him.

And despite everything happening around us, that sentence was the only thing that felt solid.

The only thing that hadn’t changed.

My father stepped closer.

“Blood doesn’t decide who raises you.””

His voice cracked.

“Love does.””

I looked away because I didn’t want him to see my eyes filling.

But then Evelyn spoke.

Quietly.

Almost like she was speaking to herself.

“I knew.””

Everyone turned.

My father’s face hardened.

“What did you say?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“I knew.””

The anger came back.

“You knew?””

She nodded slowly.

“Richard told me.””

Daniel stood.

“You knew she was his daughter?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Yes.””

The room exploded.

“You knew this entire time?””

Daniel’s voice echoed against the walls.

Evelyn looked hurt.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were hiding everything.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at me.

And for once, there was no hatred in her eyes.

Only exhaustion.

“Your mother and Richard…”

She stopped.

My father stepped forward.

“Say it.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Your mother and Richard had a relationship before you were born.””

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

My father’s jaw tightened.

“She never told me.””

“No,” Evelyn said.

“She didn’t.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Wait.””

He looked at me.

“So my father had…”

He couldn’t say it.

“A daughter.””

The word landed heavily.

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you hate me?””

Her expression changed.

Because that was the question she couldn’t escape.

Why me?

Why had she spent years making me feel worthless?

Why had she looked at me like I was something dirty?

She looked down.

“Because when I looked at you…”

She paused.

“I saw him.””

I felt anger rise.

“You saw Richard.””

She nodded.

“The man who betrayed me.””

My voice became colder.

“So you punished me for something I didn’t do.””

Evelyn looked ashamed.

For the first time.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

She wiped her eyes quickly.

“I know that doesn’t make it right.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“It doesn’t.””

She accepted that.

Daniel walked away.

He looked overwhelmed.

“So all this time…”

He ran a hand through his hair.

“My father had another child.””

He looked at me.

“And nobody told either of us.””

My father looked toward the documents.

“Your grandfather knew.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s why he left everything to Mia.””

“Yes.””

My father nodded.

“He wanted to protect her.””

“But why hide it?””

Nobody answered.

Then I noticed something.

The birth certificate wasn’t the only thing inside the envelope.

There was another folded page behind it.

My hands shook as I pulled it out.

Another letter.

This time from my grandfather.

I opened it.

Dear Mia,

If you have found this, then you now know the truth about Richard Whitmore.

I swallowed.

You are probably angry.

I almost laughed.

He knew me too well.

You have every right to be.

The room was silent.

Everyone listened.

But there is something you must understand. Richard was not the only person who made mistakes.

My eyes moved lower.

Your mother loved you more than anything in this world.

My throat tightened.

She was afraid that if the truth came out, Evelyn would destroy you.

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

She made me promise to protect you.

I kept reading.

But there is another reason I waited.

A cold feeling spread through me.

Richard did not die because of his affair.

My heartbeat increased.

He died because he discovered someone was trying to erase both of his children.

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

Both children.

Me.

And him.

The letter continued.

The person who wanted Richard gone wanted control over his entire legacy.

My father stepped closer.

I did.

They wanted Daniel because he was the legal heir.

A pause.

And they wanted Mia because she was the only person who could challenge that inheritance.

The room went silent.

The truth became clear.

This wasn’t just about money.

It wasn’t just about the mansion.

Someone had spent years trying to control a fortune.

And we were obstacles.

I looked at Daniel.

“We were both targets.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Then my father noticed something.

The bottom of the page.

A signature.

But it wasn’t my grandfather’s.

It was another handwriting.

A note added later.

Three words.

My blood froze.

Daniel saw it too.

“What does that say?””

I turned the paper toward the light.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the message was clear.

*I know, Mia.*

My father took the paper.

“When was this added?””

I looked at the date.

My stomach dropped.

It had been written only six months ago.

Six months.

Someone knew I had discovered the truth.

Someone had been watching.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Because the name displayed on the phone was impossible.

A name that should have belonged only to the dead.

I saw it.

Richard Whitmore.

Daniel slowly answered.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

A whisper.

A voice none of us expected to hear.

“Mia is not the only child your father left behind.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

The voice continued.

“There is another.””

My father grabbed the phone.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then the caller spoke one final sentence.

May you like

And it changed everything.

“The person who killed Richard Whitmore is still protecting his third child.””
