Chapter 5 - ARTHUR TOLD ME SOMETHING I DID NOT WANT TO HEAR

I adored my father.

That did not make him always right.

One night he said:

“I never liked Daniel.”

I looked.

“That is not helpful.”

“I know.”

Then:

“You should have told me before wedding.”

“I did.”

“No. You made comments.”

Fair.

Then he admitted:

“I thought if I pushed too hard, you’d defend him.”

Probably.

Then:

“So you waited for evidence.”

“Yes.”

Adults managing truth again.

Then I said:

“Dad, Lily’s trust is not your weapon against people you dislike.”

His face changed.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Silence.

He had walked into ballroom and said:

“You attacked the child who owns more of this room than you ever will.”

Dramatic.

Satisfying.

Also wrong emphasis.

I told him.

“Her money did not make that bottle worse.”

He looked down.

“You’re right.”

Then:

“If Lily had no trust?”

“She still deserved protection.”

“Yes.”

Then he apologized.

To Lily too.

“Grandpa said something at wedding that made your money sound like reason people should respect you.”

Lily barely remembered.

Arthur continued:

“It isn’t.”

Then:

“You matter if you own nothing.”

Lily said:

“I own Bunny.”

Her stuffed rabbit.

Arthur smiled.

“Very important asset.”

Good.

Then trust education later would build.

But as child, no burden.

Then Arthur told me Michael’s final instructions.

My late husband—Lily’s father.

He had written:

Do not make Lily grow up inside inheritance story.

Exactly.

Then:

The company should be professionally governed. Lily should get education and choice, not obligation.

Arthur had honored.

Mostly.

Then:

If she never wants Bennett Hospitality, that is not betrayal.

Good.

Then I cried.

Michael had known.

Then Daniel? He had never met Michael much before death? Maybe briefly. Not important.

Then I realized everyone around Lily kept trying to make her symbolic.

Evelyn: obstacle.

Victor: revenue source.

Arthur sometimes: legacy.

Media: heiress.

Me?

I risked making her victim.

So I stopped talking case around her.

She went school.

Dance class.

Lost teeth.

May you like

Life.

That was protection too.
