Chapter 7 - LILY CHOSE WHETHER DANIEL STAYED IN HER LIFE

After divorce, Daniel asked:

“Can I still see her?”

I said:

“That is not only my decision.”

Lily was eight by then.

Therapist helped.

She said:

“I want lunch sometimes.”

So lunch.

No overnight.

No legal parent status.

No financial role.

Then Daniel showed up.

No gifts beyond small book.

Good.

He asked:

“How’s school?”

“Boring.”

Then:

“Do you hate me?”

I almost kicked him under table.

Do not burden child.

He corrected.

“Sorry. You don’t have to answer.”

Growth.

Then Lily said:

“I was mad.”

“Fair.”

Then:

“You let Grandma say I wasn’t family.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I was afraid of fighting her.”

“Were you afraid of me?”

“No.”

“Then why did I have to be sad so you weren’t?”

Daniel looked.

There was no answer better than truth.

“I made wrong choice.”

Good.

Then over years, relationship remained.

He became Uncle-like former stepfather? Lily called Daniel.

No forced Dad.

At twelve, she invited him to school concert.

At sixteen, not birthday.

Choice fluctuated.

He accepted.

Then Daniel remarried years later? Could.

He asked Claire? No need.

Maybe he stayed single for a while.

Then when he eventually married another woman, he did not merge family finances casually.

Lessons.

No need subplot.
