Chapter 6 - RYAN HAD TO DECIDE WHETHER HE WANTED A WIFE OR HIS MOTHER’S APPROVAL

We separated for four months.
Therapy separately.
Then couples sessions only to decide future.
I did not return home immediately.
Ryan moved out of mansion? It was Diane’s home anyway. We had our own condo normally; dinner at Diane’s mansion. Good.
Our shared condo.
I stayed temporary rental.
Then Ryan began confronting Diane.
Not performative.
Concrete.
He sent:
Do not contact Claire.
Then:
Do not contact Elena.
Then changed estate plan independently.
Removed Diane from advisory roles over any personal trusts he controlled.
No financial punishment beyond his rights.
Then family company.
He resigned from family governance committee? Maybe.
He remained executive but sought independent chair.
Why?
Because he recognized mother’s influence.
Then Diane threatened:
“You are throwing family away over woman who assaulted me.”
Ryan answered:
“You humiliated her mother on purpose.”
Then:
“She poured soup.”
“Yes.”
“Then she is dangerous.”
“No. She was wrong. I was worse when I hit her.”
That mattered.
He stopped making my wrong action excuse his.
Then he entered anger-management therapy.
Not because court forced.
Because he had crossed line.
He said:
“I never thought I was man who hits wife.”
Therapist:
“You were that man once. What matters is whether you make sure it never happens again.”
No absolution.
Then I asked:
“Why did you raise hand again?”
He said:
“I don’t know if I would have hit again.”
Not good enough.
Then:
“But the fact you thought I might means I already destroyed safety.”
Yes.
Then we talked divorce.
I leaned yes.
Ryan accepted.
No threats.
No “take everything.”
No kids in this story.
Simpler.
Then property.
Prenup? Could have.
We divided marital assets fairly.
Diane had no claim.
Ryan paid no giant settlement due abuse? Court handles.
We chose divorce.
He asked:
“Could we ever try again?”
I said:
“I don’t know.”
Then after a year maybe no. Better story can end with divorce and respectful later relationship. User usually likes justice, maybe not reconciliation.
Let's keep they divorced.
Ryan’s redemption is boundaries, accountability, not getting wife back.
That is stronger.
Then he told Diane:
“Claire leaving is consequence of what I did, not what you did alone.”
Good.
May you like
Diane hated.
Because she wanted blame elsewhere.
