Chapter 9 - RYAN FINALLY TOLD HIS MOTHER THE SENTENCE HE SHOULD HAVE SAID AT DINNER

Three years after divorce, Ryan called me.
Rare.
He said:
“My mother is sick.”
Not terminal. Surgery.
He asked nothing.
Just informing because Diane had named me in old emergency contact? We changed. Maybe he wanted tell out of courtesy.
Then:
“She asked about you.”
I said:
“I hope surgery goes well.”
That was all.
Later Ryan told me conversation.
Diane complained:
“Claire destroyed this family.”
Ryan said:
“No.”
Then:
“You did?”
He said:
“No.”
Then:
“I did.”
Diane stared.
Ryan continued:
“You humiliated Elena. Claire retaliated wrongly. I hit my wife. Marcus reacted. But my marriage ended because I made Claire unsafe and spent years letting you disrespect her family.”
There.
Sentence he should have said at dinner:
Mom, stop. Elena is our guest. Bring her a real plate and apologize.
He told Diane:
“I had chance to say that.”
Then:
“I didn’t.”
That was his burden.
Diane cried.
Then Ryan said:
“I love you. I won’t lie for you.”
Growth.
He later remarried? Maybe eventually, no need.
He remained single for years.
Then new relationship with strong boundaries.
Good.
I heard and felt nothing romantic.
Just relief.
He became better person.
May you like
Not my husband.
That was okay.
