Chapter 7 - MARCUS ALSO HAD TO ANSWER FOR HIS PUNCH

Marcus had protected me.

He also hit Ryan.

He received citation? Since Ryan shoved first, possible self-defense/defense of sibling, one punch reasonable? Could be legally justified. But still police review.

Security footage showed:

Ryan shoved Marcus hard.

Raised arm.

Marcus punched once to create distance.

No continued attack.

Prosecutor declined charges after review as defense of another/self-defense? Plausible.

Marcus still said:

“I wish I’d just pulled him away.”

Growth.

Then I said:

“You stopped after one.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“And I’m glad you came.”

That mattered.

He asked:

“Would you have left without me?”

I thought.

“Eventually.”

Maybe.

But his entrance broke spell.

Then he confessed something.

He had known Diane disliked Mom for years.

Why not tell me?

“Same reason Mom didn’t.”

He thought marriage peace.

Everyone protected marriage except me.

Interesting.

Then:

“I should have said something.”

Yes.

Then our family changed rule:

No hiding “to protect Claire.”

Tell.

I can decide.

Again autonomy theme.

Then Diane.

She tried reconciliation through church leader? Maybe no need.

Sent gifts.

Flowers.

Then letter.

At first generic:

I’m sorry dinner got out of hand.

I returned.

Months later:

I served your mother scraps because I wanted her to feel inferior.

Specific.

Then:

I wanted you to see supporting her would cost peace with Ryan.

Then:

I convinced myself protecting family wealth made cruelty acceptable.

Better.

Then:

I am sorry.

I read.

Did not reply.

Mom read copy? I asked permission. She said no.

“I don’t need her explanation.”

Her choice.

Then Diane faced trust/family-office consequences for misclassified expenses.

She repaid around $110k after audit.

Removed from family advisory committee by independent trustee? If terms allowed based on conflicts. Perhaps resigned under settlement.

No criminal charges for dinner humiliation, maybe soup no. She was victim of soup too. No assault by her.

Her wrongdoing mostly coercion/financial governance, not criminal. Consequences social/civil.

Good.

Then relatives stopped orbiting.

Some remained.

May you like

Diane’s mansion became quieter.

That was consequence she understood.
