Chapter 10 - THE FINAL LETTER

Years later, Claire received one final letter.

It was from her grandmother.

The letter had been written decades earlier.

It said:

If you are reading this, then the family has finally learned the truth.

Money will attract people.

Power will attract enemies.

But love will reveal them.

Claire cried.

She folded the letter carefully.

Then she placed it inside a wooden box.

I asked:

“Why keep it?”

“Because someday our son will need to read it.”

I smiled.

“He's too young.”

“Not forever.”

She was right.

Children eventually ask where their family came from.

They deserve the truth.

Not the polished version.

Not the convenient version.

The truth.

Because secrets don't disappear.

They wait.

And when they finally emerge, they can destroy everything.

Or they can free you.

For us, the truth did both.

It destroyed the family we thought we knew.

And gave us the family we actually wanted.

Years passed.

Our son grew up.

My father became a grandfather who never missed a birthday.

Richard retired.

My mother lived quietly in another state.

She sent cards.

Claire sometimes answered.

Sometimes she didn't.

There was no hatred anymore.

May you like

Only distance.

And that was enough.
