Chapter 6 - THE DEED

The deed was hidden inside Claire's inheritance trust.
Arthur believed it gave him control of the entire property network.
But he didn't know the document was protected by a second clause.
If anyone attempted to obtain it through fraud or coercion, ownership would automatically transfer to a public foundation.
My father had designed the clause years earlier.
Claire stared at the document.
“So Arthur can't take it.”
“No.”
“Then why give it to him?”
My father smiled.
“Because he won't know it's useless.”
We created a copy.
The police monitored every move.
Arthur contacted us that evening.
He demanded the deed.
I agreed.
We arranged a meeting at an old hotel.
Arthur arrived with two men.
My mother was there.
She looked terrified.
Arthur smiled.
“Give me the deed.”
I placed the folder on the table.
He opened it.
His eyes widened.
“Finally.”
Then my father stepped into the room.
Arthur froze.
“You.”
My father looked at him.
“You should have stopped years ago.”
Arthur pulled a gun.
Police immediately moved in.
He dropped it.
The men beside him were arrested.
My mother began crying.
Arthur looked at me.
“You think this is over?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
He laughed.
“Your company still belongs to me.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I showed him the corporate documents.
His shares had already been frozen.
His shell companies had been seized.
His accounts had been blocked.
The entire network had collapsed.
Arthur looked at my father.
“You planned this.”
My father smiled.
“No.”
He looked at Claire.
“She did.”
Everyone turned.
Claire stood beside me.
She had been studying the trust documents.
She had found the final clause.
Arthur's entire plan had collapsed because of her grandmother's foresight.
Arthur was arrested.
My mother was taken into custody for questioning.
And for the first time in years, the family secret was finally exposed.
But Claire still had one question.
“Why did my grandmother know this would happen?”
My father looked at her.
“Because she knew your mother.”
Claire frowned.
“My mother?”
My father nodded.
“She wasn't protecting you from Arthur.”
May you like
He paused.
“She was protecting you from Evelyn.”
