Chapter 14 - THE LAST VISIT

My mother visited us one final time before moving permanently to another state.
She stood at the doorway.
Claire invited her inside.
They talked for hours.
I didn't listen.
I gave them privacy.
Later, Claire came to me.
“She apologized.”
“Again?”
“Yes.”
“What did you say?”
“I told her I believed she was sorry.”
“And?”
“I told her that didn't mean everything was okay.”
I nodded.
“That sounds fair.”
Claire smiled.
“She accepted it.”
My mother left the next morning.
She hugged our son.
Then she looked at Claire.
“Take care of my grandson.”
Claire answered:
“We take care of each other.”
My mother smiled through tears.
Then she walked away.
I watched her car disappear.
There was sadness.
But no anger.
