Chapter 10: The Secret Behind Daniel's Birth
I stared at the envelope in my hands.
The First Son's Inheritance.
Beneath the title were the words:
Daniel must never find out who his real father is.
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the ticking clock in the hallway.
My mother sat motionless.
Vanessa looked almost pleased with herself.
Richard stood beside her, watching me carefully.
I looked at him.
“What does this mean?””
He glanced toward my mother.
“I think Margaret should read the letter first.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“Mama?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Your father promised me he would never let this secret hurt Daniel.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Apparently, he wasn't very good at keeping promises.””
I turned sharply.
“Enough.””
She raised both hands.
“Fine. Read it.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter written in my father's familiar handwriting.
My dearest Carmen,
If this letter has reached you, then the truth has finally become impossible to hide.
There is something about Daniel's birth that I should have told both of you years ago. I didn't because I believed silence would protect our family.
I was wrong.
I stopped reading.
My mother had begun crying.
I continued.
Daniel is not my biological son.
The room went silent.
I read the sentence again.
Then I looked at my mother.
She covered her face.
“I'm sorry,” she whispered.
I felt as if the floor had shifted beneath me.
“Daniel isn't Dad's son?””
My mother shook her head.
“He was your father's son in every way that mattered.””
“But who was his biological father?””
Richard stepped forward.
“His name was Michael Carter.””
My mother looked up.
“No.””
Richard continued.
“Michael was Margaret's first husband.””
I stared at him.
My mother had never mentioned a first marriage.
Not once.
“Mom?””
She nodded slowly.
“I was nineteen. I married Michael before I met your father. We were young, and we thought we could build a life together.””
“What happened?””
“He died in an accident when Daniel was very young.””
I sat down.
“Daniel was his child?””
“Yes.””
“Then how did Dad become his father?””
My mother took a trembling breath.
“Your father met me when Daniel was two. He knew I was a widow. He knew Daniel wasn't his biological son. He married me anyway.””
She looked toward the hallway.
“He raised Daniel as his own. He never treated him differently.””
I glanced at the letter.
“Why did Dad keep this secret?””
My mother lowered her voice.
“Because Michael's family had money. A great deal of it. And they had been trying to find Daniel for years.””
Richard nodded.
“Michael Carter came from a wealthy property-development family. Before his death, he established a trust for his son.””
I looked at him.
“How much money?””
“Your father's records indicate the trust is now worth approximately $4.8 million.””
My breath caught.
“And Daniel doesn't know?””
Richard looked at my mother.
“He knows his mother was married before. But he doesn't know the full financial arrangements.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
“Now you understand.””
I turned toward her.
“Understand what?””
“Why your father changed his will. He knew Daniel could inherit millions from his biological father's family. He wanted to keep everything else for himself.””
My mother shook her head.
“That isn't true.””
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel spent his entire life believing your father loved you more. Then he discovered that the old man had been hiding an inheritance worth millions.””
I looked at Richard.
“Did Daniel know about the trust?””
Richard nodded.
“Not initially. But someone contacted him about it approximately a year before your father's death.””
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
My stomach tightened.
Vanessa didn't deny it.
Instead, she walked toward the dining table and placed her handbag down.
“I discovered the Carter family records while helping Daniel organize some old paperwork. I found Michael's name. I did some research.””
“And then?””
“I told Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“So you knew about the inheritance before Dad died?””
“Yes.””
“And the money taken from Mom's account?””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Daniel needed money to establish his legal claim.””
Richard shook his head.
“That's not what happened.””
Vanessa turned.
“Don't start.””
Richard placed his hands on the back of a chair.
“The money wasn't used to establish Daniel's claim. It was transferred into accounts controlled by a company I own.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He hesitated.
“Because Vanessa told me Daniel had authorized the transfers.””
My mother's voice trembled.
“Then you stole from me?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“I received the money. I didn't know it belonged to Margaret.””
Vanessa snapped.
“You knew exactly what you were doing.””
Richard turned toward her.
“I knew you were trying to hide something. I didn't know you had forged documents.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Forged documents?””
She stared at him.
“Richard, stop talking.””
He reached into his coat and pulled out another folder.
“I brought these because I'm finished protecting you.””
Inside were bank transfers, company registrations, and copies of emails.
One email had been sent from Vanessa to Richard.
Once Margaret signs the house transfer, Daniel will have control of the property. We can sell it before the old lawyer realizes what happened.
Another read:
The inheritance is the real prize. We only need the original birth records.
I looked up.
“You were planning to sell Mom's house and claim Daniel's inheritance?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I was trying to secure our children's future.””
“By stealing from an elderly woman?””
“By taking what should have belonged to Daniel.””
My mother stood.
“Your father gave Daniel everything. He loved him as his own.””
Vanessa laughed.
“And yet he left him nothing.””
Richard quietly interrupted.
“That's not true.””
He removed one final document.
It was a certificate from the Carter family trust.
The beneficiary was Daniel Miller.
The trust had been established decades earlier.
But beneath the beneficiary information was a condition.
Daniel had to establish his identity through original birth records and a DNA verification process.
And there was another clause.
Any person found to have fraudulently interfered with the trust would be excluded from receiving any benefit from it.
Vanessa's face went pale.
I looked at Richard.
“Who can establish his identity?””
“The Carter family attorney. But we need the original records.””
My mother slowly approached the table.
She picked up the letter from my father.
“Your father kept those records in the blue box.””
I looked at her.
“You know where it is?””
She nodded.
“Not exactly. But I remember where he hid the key.””
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Hello?””
His voice was unusually calm.
“Carmen, I know Vanessa is with you.””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Put her on the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because I want to know what she's told you.””
Vanessa snatched the phone.
“Daniel, listen to me—”
A loud crash came through the speaker.
Then Daniel shouted.
“You told me the Carter inheritance was mine! You told me there was no other beneficiary!””
Vanessa went completely still.
Richard took a step backward.
And then Daniel said something that made me realize he had discovered the truth about his marriage.
“Vanessa, whose name is on the account where you put the money?””
The call disconnected.
I stared at my phone.
Vanessa looked toward the front door.
For the first time, she appeared genuinely afraid.
May you like
Because the answer to Daniel's question was not his name.
It was hers.
