Chapter 12: Evelyn's Testimony
I ran toward the front of the house.
A woman stood beside the garden gate.
She was in her early sixties, with shoulder-length gray hair and a dark coat buttoned to her neck.
She held a leather handbag against her chest.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she looked at my mother.
“Margaret?””
My mother stepped forward.
“Evelyn?””
The woman nodded.
“I know I should have come sooner.””
My mother stared at her.
“You disappeared.””
“I had to.””
Mr. Whitmore approached.
“Evelyn, I've been trying to find you for over a year.””
She looked at him.
“I know. I'm sorry, Thomas.””
I closed the garden gate.
“Can someone please tell me what's happening?””
Evelyn looked toward the house.
“Not here.””
We brought her inside.
She sat at the dining table, the same table where my mother had once been forbidden to eat.
I placed a glass of water in front of her.
She didn't touch it.
Instead, she opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.
“I worked for your father for almost fifteen years,” she began.
“I handled his business accounts and helped him prepare financial statements.””
I sat opposite her.
“And you knew about Daniel's transfers?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you stop them?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I didn't know they were happening until it was too late.””
She explained that Daniel had initially requested small payments through a company that claimed to provide construction materials.
The invoices looked legitimate.
But the suppliers didn't exist.
When Evelyn investigated, she discovered that the money was being transferred into accounts connected to Vanessa and Richard Hale.
She brought the evidence to my father.
He was devastated.
“He told me he wanted to protect his family,” Evelyn said.
“He believed Daniel could still change.””
My mother lowered her head.
“That sounds like him.””
Evelyn continued.
“But then I found something else.””
She opened the envelope.
Inside were photographs of a car, several repair invoices, and a copy of an old police report.
The car belonged to Michael Carter.
I looked at the photographs.
“Why did you have these?””
“Your father asked me to investigate a payment made through his company. The payment was linked to a repair shop that had worked on Michael's vehicle.””
I felt a chill.
“Was Daniel involved?””
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“He signed the payment authorization.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“But Daniel was a little boy when Michael died.””
Evelyn nodded.
“That's why I never believed he was responsible for the original incident.””
“Then who was?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“I don't know. But I know who benefited from keeping the truth hidden.””
She placed another photograph on the table.
It showed a younger Richard Hale standing beside a man in a police uniform.
“Richard was working for Michael's family at the time,” Evelyn explained.
“He handled several property transactions. After Michael died, a large portion of the Carter estate was moved into a private holding company.””
“Was that legal?””
“Some of it. Other transfers were never properly explained.””
I looked at Mr. Whitmore.
“Could someone have stolen Michael's money?””
He examined the documents.
“It's possible. We need the original estate records.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father found evidence that the company used to move the money was still active. It was receiving payments through Daniel's business.””
I felt my head spinning.
“So Daniel was stealing from Dad to pay someone connected to Michael's estate?””
“That's what your father suspected.””
My mother looked directly at Evelyn.
“Why did you disappear?””
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“Because someone came to my house.””
“When?””
“Two days after your husband died.””
“Who?””
“Richard.””
I leaned forward.
“What did he want?””
“He wanted the documents. He told me your father had left behind information that could destroy several people.””
“And you refused?””
“I did.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small memory card.
“He threatened my daughter. He knew where she worked. He knew where her children went to school.””
My mother reached for her hand.
“Oh, Evelyn.””
“I moved away. I changed my number. I thought if I disappeared, they would leave my family alone.””
Mr. Whitmore examined the memory card.
“What is on this?””
“An audio recording. Richard made a phone call after visiting me. He didn't realize my office recorder was still running.””
I looked at her.
“Does it mention my father?””
“Yes.””
Mr. Whitmore asked whether she had a backup.
She nodded.
“Two copies. One with my sister and one with my attorney.””
He carefully placed the card in a protective case.
“We'll make sure this is handled properly.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“There is something else.””
I waited.
“Your father didn't just discover the money transfers. He discovered that Daniel had been told a different story about his biological father.””
My mother frowned.
“What story?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“Daniel believed Michael Carter had abandoned him before he died. He was told that Michael had refused to support him.””
My mother shook her head.
“That isn't true.””
“I know. Michael had established the trust before he died. He wanted Daniel to have everything.””
I stared at her.
“Who told Daniel otherwise?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Richard.””
The room went silent.
Richard had not only been involved in the financial transfers.
He had apparently spent years manipulating Daniel's understanding of his own family history.
“Why?”” I asked.
“Because the trust was protected. Richard couldn't access it without Daniel's cooperation. He needed Daniel to believe that his father had left him nothing, so he could persuade him to sign certain documents.””
My mother stood abruptly.
“Daniel believed he had been abandoned?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He was angry. He was vulnerable. And Richard used that.””
I thought about my brother at the dining table.
The way he had looked at our mother.
The bitterness in his voice when he said Dad had loved me more.
For the first time, I wondered how much of Daniel's cruelty had been shaped by years of lies.
It didn't excuse what he had done.
But it explained why someone might have been able to manipulate him.
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
I know Evelyn is with you. You need to hear my side before she destroys everything.
Another message arrived.
Meet me at the old church at six. Come alone.
I knew immediately who had sent it.
Daniel.
I showed the message to Mr. Whitmore.
He shook his head.
“Absolutely not.””
“I need to hear what he knows.””
“Then he can speak to us with legal representation present.””
But my mother was already looking at the phone.
“Carmen, please.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“Daniel may have done terrible things. But I want to hear him tell the truth.””
Evelyn stood.
“Margaret, I understand. But you must be careful. Richard is not finished.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She took a long breath.
“The recording on that memory card is not the only evidence I have. I kept the original file from the night Michael died.””
My heart stopped.
“What original file?””
“The emergency call.””
I stared at her.
“An emergency call?””
She nodded.
“Someone called for help after Michael's car was found. The caller gave the police information that never appeared in the official report.””
Mr. Whitmore frowned.
“Why didn't you tell me this before?””
“Because the voice on the recording belongs to someone I was terrified to accuse.””
“Who?””
Evelyn looked directly at me.
“Your father.””
My mother staggered backward.
“No.””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“I am sorry, Margaret. But your husband knew more about Michael Carter's death than he ever told you.””
I looked at the woman who had just reopened every wound in our family.
“Are you saying Dad helped cover up Michael's death?””
Evelyn nodded.
Then she opened her handbag and removed one final photograph.
It showed my father standing outside a police station.
Beside him was a much younger Richard Hale.
On the back, my father's handwriting read:
The night I saved Daniel, I made a promise I would spend the rest of my life regretting.
I stared at the words.
My mother whispered, “What did he do?””
Evelyn looked at us.
And finally revealed the secret that would change everything.
“Your father didn't protect Daniel because he was afraid of losing his son.””
May you like
She paused.
“He protected Daniel because he believed Daniel had witnessed Michael Carter's murder when he was only two years old.””
