Chapter 8: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

I sat in the repair shop for several minutes without moving.

The audio played again in my headphones.

“Vanessa, make sure nobody finds out what happened after Dad fell.””

Then silence.

I removed the headphones.

“Can you play that again?”” I asked.

The technician, a quiet man named Peter, looked uncomfortable.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

He replayed the recording.

The words were unmistakable.

I closed my eyes.

My father hadn't simply died in his sleep.

Something had happened.

And my brother had been there.

I immediately called Mr. Whitmore.

He answered while I was still sitting in the parking lot.

“Carmen?””

“I found a recording.””

“What does it contain?””

I repeated the words.

He didn't speak for several seconds.

Then he said, “Do not share that recording with anyone. Preserve the original device and make two secure copies.””

“Should I call the police?””

“Yes. But I want you to understand something first. A recording like this is concerning, but it doesn't establish how your father died. We need the original medical records, the death certificate, and any available hospital or emergency service documentation.””

“What if Daniel hurt him?””

“Then the authorities need to establish that. We cannot make that conclusion ourselves.””

I looked through the windshield.

People were walking along the pavement, carrying coffee and shopping bags.

The world was continuing as though my family hadn't just been torn apart.

“I want the truth,” I whispered.

“And you will pursue it,” Mr. Whitmore said.

“But you must keep yourself and your mother safe.””

I drove home.

My mother was sitting in the living room with Ethan.

They were looking through an old photo album.

When I entered, she looked up.

“Did you find something?””

I sat beside her.

“Yes.””

I hesitated.

Then I played the recording.

My mother's face changed as soon as she heard Daniel's voice.

When it ended, she pressed both hands against her mouth.

“Oh, my God.””

I put my arm around her.

“Mom, did you know Daniel was with Dad that night?””

She shook her head.

“No. He told me he had left before dinner.””

“Where were you?””

“In the bedroom. Your father wasn't feeling well, so I brought him tea. Daniel came around seven.””

“What happened afterward?””

“Your father asked me to leave them alone. He said they needed to talk.””

“Did you hear an argument?””

She nodded slowly.

“I heard Daniel shouting. Then something crashed.””

My stomach tightened.

“What crashed?””

“I don't know. I went into the hallway, but Daniel told me to go back to bed.””

“Did you see Dad?””

She started crying.

“When I came downstairs the next morning, your father was on the living room floor. Daniel was calling emergency services.””

I stared at her.

“You found him the next morning?””

She nodded.

“What did Daniel tell you?””

“He said Dad had gotten up during the night, fallen, and hit his head. He said he must have suffered a heart attack.””

“Did anyone examine the house?””

“The paramedics came. The doctor later told me his heart had stopped.””

I swallowed.

“Did you ever question Daniel's version?””

My mother looked down.

“I was too busy grieving.””

She reached for my hand.

“Carmen, what if your brother did something terrible?””

I couldn't answer.

A little later, Ethan came into the room.

“Can I tell you something?””

I looked up.

“Of course.””

He sat on the edge of the sofa.

“Mom keeps a box in her closet. She told me never to touch it.””

“What kind of box?””

“A black jewelry box.””

My mother frowned.

“Vanessa has many boxes.””

“This one has Grandpa's watch.””

I turned toward him.

“Your grandfather's watch?””

He nodded.

“Dad gave it to Mom after Grandpa died. He said it was just something he found.””

My mother looked confused.

“Your father wore that watch every day. It was missing after he died.””

Ethan continued.

“There's a photograph inside too. I saw it when Mom opened the box.””

“What photograph?””

He swallowed.

“It showed Grandma signing some papers. Dad was standing behind her.””

My mother went completely still.

“Where did you see this?””

“In Mom's closet. Last week.””

I looked at her.

“Do you remember signing anything?””

She nodded slowly.

“Daniel brought papers to the hospital. He said they were for the insurance.””

I felt anger rise again.

“We need to find those papers.””

My mother shook her head.

“I don't want to go back there.””

“You won't have to. I'll handle it.””

But before I could make another plan, my phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

“What?””

Her voice was unusually calm.

“Carmen, I think we need to talk.””

“About what?””

“Your mother. Daniel has been very upset.””

I almost laughed.

“I'm sure he has.””

She ignored the comment.

“I want to come over.””

“Why?””

“Because I have something that belongs to your mother.””

“What?””

“Her jewelry.””

I glanced at my mother.

“What jewelry?””

“The things she left behind.””

My mother shook her head.

“Tell her I don't want anything from that house.””

I repeated her words.

Vanessa sighed.

“Fine. Then I'll bring it to you.””

There was a pause.

Then she added, “But I need you to bring the blue box.””

I froze.

“What blue box?””

“Don't pretend you don't know.””

My heart began pounding.

“Why do you want it?””

“Because it belongs to Daniel.””

“No, it doesn't.””

Vanessa's voice became sharp.

“Listen carefully. You have something that could destroy my family. I have something that could destroy yours.””

“What does that mean?””

She lowered her voice.

“Your father wasn't the only person who kept secrets.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

My mother looked frightened.

“What did she say?””

I told her.

She slowly stood and walked to the bedroom.

When she returned, she was carrying an old photograph of our family.

My father stood in the middle.

Daniel was beside him.

I was on the other side.

My mother looked at the photograph for a long time.

Then she said, “There's something I never told you about your father.””

“What?””

She pointed toward Daniel.

“Your brother wasn't the only child your father worried about.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

She looked directly at me.

“Three weeks before he died, your father told me he had discovered that someone in this family had been using my identity to open bank accounts.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Who?””

My mother shook her head.

“He didn't tell me.””

Then she looked at the photograph again.

“But he said the person had been doing it for years.””

My phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from Mr. Whitmore.

The subject line read:

URGENT: Original Trust Beneficiary Records Located.

I opened it.

There was one attached document.

A scanned letter from my father, dated two weeks before his death.

The first paragraph read:

If Carmen is reading this, it means the person I feared has finally exposed themselves.

I scrolled down.

May you like

The final sentence was underlined.

The money was never stolen to save Daniel's marriage. It was stolen to finance something Vanessa has been hiding from him.
