Chapter 5 - RYAN TRIED TO BLAME MELISSARyan’s defense changed repeatedly.

First:

There was no murder plan.

Then:

The freezer was part of a consensual argument gone wrong.

Then:

Melissa masterminded everything.

That last one lasted longest.

His attorneys argued Melissa manipulated a financially stressed man.

She created the insurance paperwork.

She suggested staging an accident.

She pushed him.

Melissa’s messages made that difficult.

So did his search history.

How long can person survive enclosed freezer unplugged

hypothermia accidental death insurance

spousal inheritance Ohio trust property

minor child inheritance father control

Those searches were made from Ryan’s personal laptop.

Not Melissa’s.

Then prosecutors found something worse.

A draft letter supposedly written by me.

I have been overwhelmed lately and sometimes think my family would be better without me.

A fake suicide narrative.

If the accident story failed, Ryan had another version waiting.

When I read it, I felt violated in a way the forged deed had not caused.

He had taken my voice.

Written despair in my name.

Prepared to tell Ethan his mother had chosen to die.

I thought of my son growing up believing that.

That anger became harder than fear.

I told prosecutors:

“Do not let him use that letter in any way without making clear it is fake.”

They promised.

Then Warren Cole was arrested.

The attorney.

He admitted helping draft property transfers and insurance structures.

He claimed he never knew Ryan intended murder.

That might have been true at first.

Then investigators showed him the messages.

Ryan:

Need death transfer to look automatic. No probate fight.

Warren:

Then cleanest structure is survivorship plus insurance.

Ryan:

And if Sarah’s family challenges?

Warren:

Once she’s not around, they can complain all they want.

Warren stopped claiming innocence.

He began cooperating.

He explained why Ryan targeted the freezer.

No camera inside the service room.

Low household traffic.

Easy to stage as mechanical accident.

What Ryan didn’t know?

The emergency alarm panel Ethan triggered stored timestamp logs.

And exterior security cameras recorded Ryan and Melissa moving through the service hallway.

Not enough alone.

Devastating combined with everything else.
