Chapter 7 - THE COURTROOMThe case did not become a glamorous trial.

Reality rarely does.
There were hearings.
Motions.
Plea negotiations.
Financial experts.
Insurance investigators.
Psychological evaluations.
Months of paperwork.
Ryan eventually accepted a plea agreement involving attempted murder, conspiracy, forgery, insurance fraud, and offenses related to assaulting Ethan.
Melissa also pleaded to conspiracy-related charges in exchange for cooperation.
Warren lost his license and faced separate criminal consequences.
I attended Ryan’s sentencing.
Not because I wanted to watch him suffer.
Because I wanted him to see me alive.
Ethan did not attend.
That was my decision with his therapist.
Ryan stood before the judge.
Older.
Thinner.
His attorney described stress.
Debt.
Poor judgment.
Then Ryan spoke.
“I loved my wife.”
I felt nothing.
Or maybe too many things to identify.
“I convinced myself I was protecting my son’s future.”
That made me angry.
The prosecutor immediately corrected the narrative.
Ethan’s future had never been endangered by me.
Ryan was trying to steal from it.
The judge addressed him directly.
“You did not protect your child’s future.”
Then:
“Your child protected his mother from you.”
Ryan lowered his head.
That sentence would stay with me.
