Chapter 9 - MELISSA WROTE TO METwo years later, I received a letter from Melissa.

I almost threw it away.
Then I read it.
She admitted the affair.
Admitted greed.
Admitted that once Ryan began talking about my death, she could have walked away.
She didn’t.
She wrote:
I kept telling myself I wasn’t the one tying your hands, so I wasn’t really doing it. That was the lie that let me stay.
I read that twice.
Then:
I am sorry Ethan saw any of it.
That mattered.
Not enough for forgiveness.
But more honest than pretending he was collateral damage.
I did not respond.
Some apologies deserve acknowledgment internally, not access externally.
Ryan wrote too.
More often.
His first letters were terrible.
He blamed debt.
Melissa.
My father.
The prenup.
Pressure.
I returned them unopened.
A year later, one arrived with only three paragraphs.
I hit Ethan because he interrupted something I had already convinced myself was necessary. There is no excuse for that.
Then:
You did not make me do this by refusing money. Your father did not make me do it by protecting the trust. Melissa did not make me do it by agreeing with me.
Finally:
I did it.
I kept that letter.
Not for me.
For Ethan someday.
If he ever wanted proof his father eventually stopped blaming everyone else.
May you like
Maybe he would never read it.
That would be his choice.
