Chapter 3 - BRITTANY WASN’T THE MASTERMINDTwo days later, Brittany called.

Rachel almost ignored it.

Then answered.

“What?”

Brittany was crying.

“Jason is blaming me.”

Rachel almost laughed.

“What did you expect?”

“He told police the money transfers were my idea.”

“Were they?”

“No.”

“Did you accept the money?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“Then you’re involved.”

Brittany cried harder.

“He said it was temporary.”

“For what?”

“To hide assets before the divorce.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Of course.

Jason had not been moving money because of love.

He had been preparing war.

Then Brittany whispered:

“He said after the divorce, he’d make sure you looked unstable.”

Rachel’s stomach tightened.

“How?”

“He kept notes.”

“What kind of notes?”

“Every time you got angry. Every time you cried. Every argument.”

“Why?”

“For court.”

Rachel felt sick.

Jason had been manufacturing a narrative.

Not merely leaving.

Preparing to portray her as dangerous.

“What else?”

Brittany hesitated.

“Please don’t hate me.”

“You’re already past that point.”

“He said Mia would eventually choose him.”

Rachel’s voice went cold.

“Why?”

“Because he planned to tell her you caused the divorce.”

That one hurt differently.

Money could be recovered.

Property could be fought over.

But using a child’s love as a weapon?

That was cruelty.

Rachel said:

“You’re going to tell my attorney everything.”

Brittany went silent.

“If I do, Jason will destroy me.”

Rachel replied:

“He already started.”

Brittany agreed to cooperate.

Not because she became good overnight.

Because she realized she was disposable too.

Jason had promised her the house.

Marriage.

A new family.

Instead, he blamed her the moment police appeared.

People like Jason never have partners.

Only useful people.

Until they stop being useful.
