Chapter 5 - THE CUSTODY HEARING HE THOUGHT HE WOULD WINJason arrived at court in an expensive suit.

He smiled at everyone.

Rachel recognized that smile.

The one he used when he needed strangers to believe he was reasonable.

His attorney claimed:

Rachel had physically attacked him.

True.

Rachel had slapped Brittany.

True.

Rachel had behaved aggressively in front of Mia.

True.

Then Rachel’s attorney said:

“Let’s discuss what happened immediately before that.”

The home security video played.

Mia entering.

Jason kissing Brittany.

Mia confronting them.

Jason grabbing her.

Then the slap.

The courtroom went silent.

Jason’s smile vanished.

The judge watched the video twice.

Then came photos of Mia’s cheek.

Then Brittany’s statement.

Then the forged documents.

Jason’s request for immediate custody failed.

His contact became supervised.

Rachel should have felt victorious.

Instead, she felt exhausted.

Outside court, Jason looked at her.

“You turned my daughter against me.”

Rachel stared back.

“No.”

Then she said:

“You did something she can’t understand yet.”

“What?”

“You made her afraid of you.”

He looked away.

That was the first time Rachel saw shame.

Not enough.

But real.
