Chapter 7 - BRITTANY CAME TO APOLOGIZEBrittany appeared at Rachel’s door months later.

Rachel nearly shut it.

Then Brittany said:

“I’m not here for Jason.”

Rachel waited.

“I came because of Mia.”

That changed things.

Not enough to invite trust.

Enough to listen.

Brittany looked ashamed.

“I told her to stay out of adult business.”

Rachel’s jaw tightened.

“I remember.”

“I watched him hit her.”

“Yes.”

“And I did nothing.”

“Yes.”

Brittany cried.

“I think about that every day.”

Rachel stayed silent.

“I thought being chosen by him meant I won.”

“Won what?”

Brittany shook her head.

“I don’t even know anymore.”

Rachel looked at her.

“I’m not going to make you feel better.”

“I know.”

“But if you mean this apology, become someone who would never stand there silently again.”

Brittany nodded.

Then she handed Rachel an envelope.

Inside were copies of messages Jason had sent before the affair was exposed.

One read:

After the custody hearing, Rachel will have no leverage.

Another:

Mia will adjust. Kids forget.

Rachel’s hand tightened.

Kids forget.

Maybe.

But parents shouldn’t depend on that.
