Chapter 14: The Brother Who Finally Told the Truth

I didn't sleep that night.

I kept looking at the photograph of the final beneficiary authorization.

Richard's name was printed beneath the proposed administrator section.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

And the date was the same day Caleb and Maya were supposed to disappear from our lives.

At 8:15 the next morning, Daniel arrived with a copy of the document.

"Have you spoken to Richard?""

"No.""

"He's at the office. He says he can explain.""

I laughed without humor.

"He has explained enough.""

Daniel placed the paper on the table.

"Marcus, we need to know whether the signature is genuine. We also need to establish whether he knew this document existed.""

I stared at the signature.

It looked like Richard's handwriting.

But I had learned not to assume anything.

"Let's hear what he has to say.""

Richard was waiting in the conference room when we arrived.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes.

He stood when I entered.

"Marcus.""

I remained standing.

"Did you sign this?""

He looked at the document.

His face changed.

"No.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"I'm not lying.""

"That's your signature.""

"I signed something similar months ago. Not this.""

Daniel placed the document in front of him.

"Can you explain what you signed?""

Richard sat slowly.

"Vanessa told me she was arranging a financial safeguard for Maya. She said you were considering changing the trust administrator because of the business expansion.""

I frowned.

"Why would I do that?""

"She said you were worried about liability.""

"Did you verify any of it?""

"No.""

He looked ashamed.

"She gave me a document and said it was only an authorization to review the trust's administrative structure.""

Daniel asked:

"Did you read it?""

Richard shook his head.

"Not carefully enough.""

I felt anger rising again.

"How many times are you going to tell me you didn't understand what you were signing?""

Richard looked up.

"I know.""

"No, you don't. Maya was being treated like a burden while you were signing papers that could take control of her money.""

He lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Richard reached into his briefcase.

He removed a small envelope.

"I found this in my office after Vanessa was taken for questioning.""

He handed it to Daniel.

Inside were several printed emails.

Daniel read them silently.

Then his expression hardened.

"Marcus, you need to see this.""

The first email was from Patricia.

It said:

*Richard's authorization is sufficient for the next stage. The remaining signature can be obtained through the existing management arrangement.*

The second email was from Vanessa.

*Once the transfer is complete, Marcus will have no reason to challenge the arrangement. He'll be too busy dealing with the consequences of the incident.*

I stared at the words.

"What incident?""

Richard swallowed.

"I think I know.""

He opened another folder.

Inside was a printed schedule of my business trips.

Several dates were highlighted.

Beside one of them was a note:

*Vehicle access confirmed.*

I looked at him.

"Richard, what does this mean?""

He hesitated.

Then he spoke.

"Vanessa wanted to make it look as though you were becoming unreliable. She asked me to provide access to the company vehicles and maintenance records.""

"Why?""

"She said it was part of the emergency incapacity plan.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did she ask anyone to interfere with his vehicle?""

Richard shook his head.

"I don't know. But I found this.""

He handed over another page.

It contained a list of vehicle maintenance requests.

One entry had been marked:

*Brake inspection — urgent. Do not close until confirmed.*

The vehicle number was mine.

My throat tightened.

"Was my car inspected?""

"According to the company system, yes.""

"By whom?""

Richard pointed to the name.

A subcontractor.

One who had been paid by Patricia's company.

Daniel immediately photographed the record.

"We need to give this to Detective Harris.""

Richard nodded.

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus, I swear I didn't know they were going to hurt you.""

I stared at him.

"Did you know they were trying to make me look mentally unfit?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know they wanted Maya removed?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know they were using our father's money?""

Richard's eyes filled.

"Yes.""

I took a step back.

"Then what exactly didn't you know?""

He began crying.

"I didn't know they were going to use an accident. I thought the plan was to get you declared unfit, move Maya temporarily, and let everything settle.""

I felt sick.

"Temporarily?""

He nodded.

"That's what they told me.""

"Where was she supposed to go?""

Richard looked at the floor.

"To Evelyn Hart.""

I remembered the name.

The hired caregiver.

The woman Vanessa had described to Maya as someone connected to her grandmother.

"Did you meet her?""

"Once.""

"What was she like?""

"Professional. Quiet. She had a room prepared for Maya.""

I stared at him.

"Did she know Maya was being taken against her will?""

Richard didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Detective Harris arrived later that morning.

He examined the vehicle records and took copies of the emails.

He explained that the documents would be investigated alongside the other evidence, including the attempted false accident report.

No one was going to treat a suspicious maintenance entry as proof of sabotage without verification.

But the timing and financial connections were serious.

Richard agreed to provide a formal statement.

Then Daniel received a call from Laura.

She had discovered that Patricia's company had kept a second set of records.

Not digital invoices.

Paper records.

Laura had found them in an off-site storage unit.

The records included payments, client agreements, and handwritten notes.

One page contained a list of children.

Beside each child's name was a status.

Some were marked:

*COMPLETED.*

Others:

*PENDING.*

Maya's name was at the top.

Beside it was a handwritten note:

*FAMILY TRANSITION — PAYMENT RELEASED AFTER CONFIRMATION.*

I felt my stomach turn.

"How many children?""

Daniel counted the names.

"At least eleven.""

Graham, who had come to provide additional information about his case, stared at the list.

"That's what she did to us.""

I looked at him.

"How many?""

He pointed to an entry.

"Caleb's name.""

Beside it was the word:

*COMPLETED.*

But beneath it, someone had written:

*REACTIVATE IF REQUIRED.*

Graham's face went pale.

"They never stopped.""

I looked at the page.

The room seemed to shrink around me.

Vanessa and Patricia hadn't simply planned to take Maya.

They had built a business around manipulating families and moving children.

And there were other parents who might still be searching for answers.

That afternoon, I visited Maya.

She was drawing at the kitchen table.

When I entered, she looked up.

"Daddy!""

She ran into my arms.

I held her for a long time.

"How are you feeling?""

"Okay.""

"Are you worried?""

She nodded.

"Is Vanessa coming back?""

I sat beside her.

"She won't be coming here today. The adults who are helping us are making sure everyone stays safe.""

Maya looked at her drawing.

It showed three people holding hands.

Me.

Maya.

And Caleb.

"Can Caleb come over?""

I smiled.

"If his dad agrees and the adults arrange it safely, yes.""

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

"I don't want him to be lonely.""

I hugged her.

"You have a very kind heart.""

She leaned against me.

After a moment, she asked:

"Daddy, do I still have to do jobs?""

I looked at her.

"What jobs?""

"All the jobs Vanessa gave me.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"No, sweetheart. You don't have to earn your place in this family.""

She looked confused.

"Not even washing dishes?""

I smiled sadly.

"You can help when you want to. But nobody gets to make you feel like you're only loved when you're useful.""

Maya stared at me.

Then she nodded.

"Can I just be six?""

I kissed her hair.

"Yes, baby. You can just be six.""

That evening, Detective Harris called.

Patricia had been located.

Investigators had also obtained additional records from the storage unit.

There was enough evidence to justify further action, but the case was far from finished.

Then he said:

"Mr. Bennett, we found something else in Patricia's files.""

"What?""

"A handwritten list of emergency contacts for the children involved.""

"Why is that important?""

"Because the person listed beside Maya's name is not Vanessa, Richard, or Evelyn Hart.""

I waited.

Detective Harris continued.

"It's someone who has already been inside your home.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who?""

He read the name.

*Mrs. Eleanor Price.*

Our former housekeeper.

The woman who had resigned three months earlier after Vanessa accused her of stealing.

I remembered her crying at the front door.

I remembered Vanessa telling me she had been dismissed for dishonesty.

And I remembered Maya asking why Mrs. Price wasn't allowed to say goodbye.

Detective Harris added:

"There's a note beside her name.""

"What does it say?""

May you like

He paused.

*THE ORIGINAL WITNESS.*
