Chapter 3: The Money My Daughter Didn't Know She Had

I read the message three times.

Maya's inheritance?

My daughter was six. Her mother, Emily, had left her a small life insurance policy and a trust fund established by her grandparents.

I had never considered the money something Maya needed to worry about.

It was there for her future.

College. A first home. Whatever life she wanted to build.

Vanessa knew about it.

But only because I had told her after we got married.

I had trusted her.

Apparently, that had been another mistake.

I typed a response.

*Who is this?*

The reply came almost immediately.

*Someone who worked in your house. Someone who saw things you didn't.*

I stood up.

*What papers are you talking about?*

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, a photograph arrived.

It showed a document lying on a desk.

At the top were the words:

*REQUEST FOR CHANGE OF TRUST ADMINISTRATION.*

Below that was my name.

And Vanessa's.

I zoomed in.

The document appeared to authorize Vanessa to become the sole financial administrator of Maya's trust.

I read the date.

It was from six weeks earlier.

My stomach tightened.

I had never signed it.

I immediately called my attorney, Daniel Brooks.

He answered on the fourth ring.

"Marcus? I wasn't expecting to hear from you tonight.""

"Daniel, I need you to check something.""

"What's wrong?""

"Did you prepare a document transferring control of Maya's trust to Vanessa?""

There was a pause.

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

"Marcus, I handle that account. There has been no authorized transfer.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Then someone is trying to make one.""

Daniel's voice changed.

"Where did you get that document?""

"Someone just sent it to me.""

"Don't touch anything else. Send me the photograph. I'll check the trust records first thing tomorrow.""

"I need you to check tonight.""

"Marcus, what's happened?""

I looked toward the stairs.

"My daughter has been abused in my home. And I think my wife may have been using her money.""

Daniel went silent.

Then he said, "I'm coming over.""

While I waited, I returned to the security footage.

I searched for the date on the document.

There was a recording from the same afternoon.

Vanessa entered my home office carrying a folder.

She looked around before closing the door.

Then she sat at my desk.

I watched her open the bottom drawer.

She removed a blue envelope.

I recognized it immediately.

It contained copies of Maya's trust documents.

Vanessa placed them on the desk and took photographs with her phone.

Then she made a call.

"Yes," she whispered.

"I have everything.""

A man's voice came through the recording, too faint to understand.

Vanessa continued.

"I just need Marcus to sign the updated authorization. He's busy, but I can get it done.""

She paused.

"No. He won't suspect anything.""

I leaned closer.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

"The little girl is the only problem. If he keeps feeling guilty about her, he'll never put me first.""

I stopped the video.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The front door opened.

Daniel walked in carrying his briefcase.

"Marcus.""

I handed him the notebook, then showed him the photograph.

He studied the document carefully.

"This isn't an official transfer," he said.

"But the signature appears to be yours.""

"It isn't.""

"Has anyone else had access to your office?""

"Vanessa.""

He looked at me.

"Do you have the original trust documents?""

"In the safe.""

"Then we need to secure them.""

I led him into my office.

The safe was behind a framed photograph of Maya and me at the zoo.

I entered the code.

The door opened.

The blue envelope was gone.

I stared at the empty shelf.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

"Marcus?""

"Someone took it.""

"Don't touch the safe anymore.""

I stepped back.

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

This time, it contained a voice recording.

I pressed play.

A woman was speaking.

I recognized Vanessa immediately.

"Just keep the girl busy. Marcus will be home Sunday, and I need those papers signed before then.""

A second voice answered.

"You're sure he'll agree?""

Vanessa laughed.

"He's easy. All I have to do is tell him it's for Maya's benefit.""

Then she added:

"And if he asks questions, I'll remind him how much it costs to raise someone else's child.""

The recording ended.

Daniel slowly lowered his phone.

"Who sent you this?""

"I don't know.""

"Find out.""

Before I could respond, footsteps sounded on the stairs.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway wearing a silk robe.

She looked at Daniel.

Then at the open safe.

Then at the notebook on the desk.

Her expression changed.

"What is he doing here?""

Daniel closed his briefcase.

"Good evening, Vanessa.""

She ignored him.

"Marcus, can I speak to you privately?""

"No.""

Her jaw tightened.

"I think you're making a terrible mistake.""

"Then explain the trust document.""

She blinked.

"What document?""

"The one with my forged signature.""

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

"That's a ridiculous accusation.""

"Where is the blue envelope from my safe?""

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

I placed my phone on the desk and played the recording.

Her own voice filled the room.

The little girl is the only problem.

Vanessa went completely still.

When the recording ended, she let out a short laugh.

"That's taken out of context.""

"What context makes that sentence acceptable?""

"You don't understand how difficult Maya has been.""

I stepped toward her.

"Don't.""

She folded her arms.

"Marcus, I have spent three years raising a child who isn't even mine.""

I stared at her.

"Nobody forced you to marry me.""

"I gave up so much for this family!""

"Then why did my daughter go hungry at her own kitchen table?""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Because she needs boundaries.""

"Why did you tell her I might send her away?""

She said nothing.

"Why did you make her write down chores and punishments?""

Still nothing.

Then she looked toward the stairs.

"Where is she?""

"Upstairs.""

"I want to talk to her.""

"No.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"She's my stepdaughter.""

"Not anymore.""

For the first time, she looked genuinely furious.

"You can't just decide that.""

I picked up my phone.

"I can decide who gets access to my daughter.""

Daniel stepped between us.

"Vanessa, I strongly advise you not to approach Maya tonight.""

She laughed.

"Are you threatening me?""

"I'm advising you that everything happening in this house is being documented.""

Her gaze moved toward the security monitor.

Then she looked back at me.

"You're making a huge mistake, Marcus.""

I didn't answer.

She walked upstairs.

A few seconds later, I heard a bedroom door slam.

Daniel waited until the house was quiet.

Then he spoke.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

"What?""

He opened his briefcase and removed a printed email.

"I checked the trust records before coming here. Someone attempted to request a beneficiary information update last month.""

"Who?""

"An individual using Vanessa's email address.""

I stared at him.

"What did they request?""

Daniel hesitated.

"They wanted to know how much money Maya would receive if you died before she turned eighteen.""

The room went silent.

I looked at the staircase.

Then at the notebook.

My daughter had been washing dishes, folding clothes, and sleeping without a proper blanket while someone was investigating the money her mother had left her.

"How much?"" I asked.

Daniel gave me a number.

It was more than enough to explain why someone might become interested in a six-year-old child's future.

But then he turned another page.

"There's one more thing. The request included a proposed new guardian.""

"Who?""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Vanessa didn't list herself.""

I frowned.

"Then who did she list?""

He slid the paper across the desk.

I read the name.

And suddenly, the mysterious messages made sense.

Because the person Vanessa wanted to become Maya's legal guardian was someone I had known for years.

Someone who had attended my wedding.

Someone who had held my daughter in his arms when she was a baby.

*My own older brother, Richard.*

I stared at the paper.

"Why would Richard be involved?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know. But there's a signature on this application that suggests he may already have agreed.""

Before I could say another word, a small voice came from the doorway.

"Daddy?""

Maya stood there holding her stuffed rabbit.

Her eyes were red.

She looked at the document in my hand.

Then she whispered:

"That's the man Mommy Vanessa said was coming to take me away.""

I dropped the paper.

"Sweetheart, what did you just say?""

Maya hugged her rabbit tightly.

"Uncle Richard.""

She looked at Daniel, then back at me.

"He told Mommy Vanessa I wouldn't have to live here anymore.""

Her little voice broke.

"Was he coming to take me somewhere, Daddy?""

I pulled her into my arms.

But as I held her, one terrible thought settled into my mind.

My wife hadn't simply been mistreating my daughter.

May you like

She might have been preparing to take her away from me.

And my brother might have been helping her.
