Chapter 8: The Room They Had Prepared for Her

I stared at the photograph until my eyes hurt.

The little white room.

The narrow bed.

The locked window.

The stuffed rabbit.

It wasn't a random picture.

It was a photograph of a place where someone had intended to keep my daughter.

I immediately forwarded it to Daniel.

Then I called the number Patricia had used.

She answered after one ring.

"Mr. Bennett.""

"Where was that photograph taken?""

"I don't think that's relevant.""

"Where is the room?""

"Your daughter is safe.""

"She's with me.""

Patricia gave a quiet laugh.

"For now.""

I felt my pulse pounding.

"Listen carefully. Every message you send me is being preserved. Every document you submit is being investigated. Stay away from my daughter.""

"Perhaps you should be asking why she was so willing to leave.""

I froze.

"What?""

"Children don't invent fear without a reason.""

I looked at Maya's drawing on the kitchen table.

"Are you suggesting she was afraid of me?""

"I'm saying we have statements.""

"What statements?""

"Statements describing an unstable household.""

I nearly shouted.

"She was afraid to ask for food in her own home!""

Patricia sighed.

"Emotional situations can be complicated, Mr. Bennett.""

"Not this one.""

I ended the call.

Daniel called two minutes later.

"I've received the photograph.""

"Can we identify the location?""

"I'm checking the image metadata and sending it to the investigators.""

"Do it quickly.""

"Marcus, listen. Don't go looking for Patricia yourself. We need to keep everything documented and let the authorities handle the investigation.""

I agreed.

But I couldn't sit still.

Someone had prepared a room for Maya.

Someone had photographed her in it.

And someone was confident enough to send that photograph directly to her father.

At 7:15 p.m., I received a call from an unfamiliar number.

It was a woman.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Laura Mitchell. I used to work for Patricia Cole.""

I sat upright.

"How did you get my number?""

"Richard gave it to me.""

I closed my eyes.

"What do you want?""

"I think you need to know what they were planning.""

"Tell me.""

Laura hesitated.

"Not over the phone. Can we meet?""

"Why should I trust you?""

"You shouldn't. But I have documents.""

"What documents?""

"Payment records. Placement schedules. Copies of emails.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"Where are you?""

She gave me the name of a coffee shop downtown.

"I'll be there in thirty minutes," she said.

I contacted Daniel immediately.

He insisted on joining me.

We met Laura at a corner table near the window.

She was in her early forties, with tired eyes and a dark blue coat.

She looked over her shoulder twice before sitting down.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

Daniel placed his briefcase on the table.

"Let's start with your identity and your role in this matter.""

Laura nodded.

She explained that she had worked as an administrative coordinator for Patricia's company for nearly two years.

Her responsibilities included scheduling appointments, maintaining client files, and preparing correspondence.

"Why did you leave?"" I asked.

She looked at me.

"Because I found out that some of the family placement files were being manipulated.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Be specific.""

Laura opened her handbag and removed a folder.

She placed three printed emails on the table.

The first was from Vanessa.

The subject line read:

*MAYA — TRANSITION PLAN.*

I began reading.

Vanessa had described Maya as emotionally difficult, disruptive, and increasingly attached to her father.

She claimed the child was struggling to adjust to the household.

But the next paragraph was worse.

Marcus is becoming suspicious of my relationship with Maya. We need to establish that the child would benefit from a different environment before he starts asking questions.

I looked up.

"She wrote this?""

Laura nodded.

"There's more.""

The second email was from Patricia.

The father must remain unaware of the proposed transition until the final authorization is secured. Any direct confrontation could jeopardize the arrangement.

My stomach tightened.

"Why were you keeping these records?""

Laura looked down.

"Because I didn't agree with what was happening.""

Daniel turned another page.

"Did you report it?""

"I tried.""

"To whom?""

"My supervisor. Patricia.""

"And?""

Laura gave a bitter laugh.

"She told me that I was confusing my personal feelings with professional obligations.""

I studied her.

"What happened next?""

"She reassigned me. Then I was dismissed.""

Daniel examined the emails.

"Do you have the originals?""

"Yes. On a secure drive.""

"Can you provide them to the investigators?""

"That's why I'm here.""

I looked at the third email.

It was dated six weeks earlier.

The sender was Vanessa.

The subject line was:

*RICHARD'S COOPERATION.*

I read it slowly.

Richard has agreed to support the arrangement. He believes Marcus is not emotionally equipped to raise Maya alone. Once the trust administration is changed, the guardianship proposal should be straightforward.

I felt anger rising again.

But Laura wasn't finished.

"There was a second arrangement," she said.

I looked at her.

"What second arrangement?""

She pulled out a photograph.

It showed a woman standing outside a large suburban house.

Beside her was a little girl.

I recognized the house from the earlier photograph.

The white bedroom was inside it.

"Who is that woman?"" I asked.

Laura lowered her voice.

"Her name is Evelyn.""

My entire body went still.

"That's my mother's name.""

Laura shook her head.

"Not your mother. A woman Patricia hired as a temporary caregiver. She was supposed to act as a relative during the transition.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Why use my mother's name?""

"Vanessa insisted on it. She thought Maya would be more comfortable if she believed she was going to someone connected to her grandmother.""

I felt sick.

They had invented a living version of my dead mother.

They had given this stranger her name.

And they had used that lie to convince my daughter she was being reunited with family.

Daniel carefully placed the photograph in his folder.

"Did this woman know the child was being misled?""

"I don't know.""

"Where is she now?""

"She was supposed to be at the house on Monday.""

I looked at Laura.

"Who owns that house?""

She hesitated.

Then she handed Daniel another document.

The property was registered to a company called Bennett Family Holdings.

I recognized the name.

It was one of my own companies.

I stared at the paperwork.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel checked the registration number.

"Marcus, do you recognize this property?""

I shook my head.

"I own several properties through that company. I don't remember buying this one.""

Laura spoke quietly.

"Patricia told Vanessa the property had been arranged through your business.""

I looked at the address.

Then I remembered.

Two years earlier, Richard had asked me to sign several routine property management documents while I was preparing for a major construction project.

He had handled the paperwork.

I had barely looked at it.

"Richard," I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

"Don't jump to conclusions. We'll verify ownership and authorization.""

But Laura was already shaking her head.

"There's something else.""

She pulled out one final page.

It was a payment schedule.

The first payment had been made.

The second was scheduled for Monday.

The amount was $150,000.

The recipient was Patricia Cole's company.

And the payment description read:

*SUCCESSFUL FAMILY TRANSITION.*

I stared at the page.

"Who authorized this?""

Laura pointed to the bottom.

A digital approval record.

My name.

My company.

My electronic signature.

But I had never approved the payment.

Daniel took a photograph.

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus, I think we need to investigate your brother's access to the company accounts immediately.""

When we returned home, Maya was sitting on the sofa watching cartoons.

She smiled when she saw me.

"Daddy! Look!""

She held up a drawing.

This time, it showed three people.

A little girl.

A tall man.

And a woman with two long braids.

I smiled gently.

"Who's that?""

"Mommy Emily.""

My heart ached.

Maya had barely remembered her biological mother.

But she still knew her face from photographs.

"That's beautiful, sweetheart.""

She handed me the picture.

"Can we put it in my room?""

"Of course.""

I carried her upstairs.

For the first time in months, I placed fresh drawings on her bedroom wall.

Her stuffed animals went back onto the bed.

I bought her a soft pink blanket and a small night-light.

When she climbed under the covers, she looked around.

"Is this my room again?""

I kissed her forehead.

"It never stopped being your room.""

She smiled.

Then she asked:

"Daddy, will Mommy Emily know I'm safe?""

I swallowed.

"I think she would be very happy to know.""

Maya closed her eyes.

I stayed beside her.

At 10:42 p.m., Daniel called.

"We checked the property records.""

"And?""

"The house belongs to your company, but the management authority was transferred to Richard eighteen months ago.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can he sell it?""

"Not without proper authorization. But he can arrange certain property-related services under the management agreement.""

I gripped the phone.

"What about the $150,000 payment?""

"The payment is scheduled for Monday morning. We have contacted the bank about the suspected unauthorized transaction.""

I looked at Maya.

Then Daniel added:

"Marcus, there's one more thing. The woman named Evelyn has a legal name.""

"What is it?""

He paused.

"Her full name is Evelyn Hart. And according to the documents Laura provided, she has already signed an agreement accepting temporary custody of Maya.""

I stared at the bedroom door.

Someone had signed a document agreeing to receive my daughter.

Someone who had never met me.

May you like

Someone who had been told that I was incapable of raising her.

And Monday was getting closer.
