Chapter 7: The Brother Behind the Lies
The hidden passage felt like it had no end.
The walls were narrow.
The air smelled like dust and old wood.
Every step echoed behind us, reminding me that Lucas Hale was somewhere back there.
Following.
Waiting.
Hunting.
I held Ethan’s hand with one hand and Eli’s with the other.
Two small hands.
Two completely different lives.
Yet somehow, they had always belonged together.
“Mom,” Ethan whispered.
I looked down.
“Yeah?””
“Is that man really Dad’s brother?””
I hesitated.
Children could handle the truth.
But not all of it at once.
“I think so.””
Ethan looked ahead.
“Why does everyone in Dad’s family know secrets?””
The question hurt because it was exactly what I had been asking myself.
Why did everyone know except me?
I had spent years believing Daniel and I had built a life based on honesty.
But maybe I had only built a life around the pieces he allowed me to see.
Behind us, a loud crash echoed through the passage.
Lucas was getting closer.
Daniel stopped.
“Keep going.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Take them and keep going.””
“No.””
“Emma.””
“I’m not leaving you.””
His expression changed.
Maybe because those were the same words he had once said to me.
Eight years ago.
In a hospital room.
When we both thought we were losing our family.
“You should,” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because I don’t deserve you protecting me.””
The honesty surprised me.
For years, Daniel had always been confident.
Always had a plan.
Always knew what to say.
But now he looked like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.
I stepped closer.
“I’m not protecting you.””
His eyes lifted.
“I’m protecting my children.””
A painful smile appeared.
“Of course.””
Then he turned toward the sound behind us.
“I need to slow him down.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
“Emma.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You already left us once.””
Daniel froze.
The words hit him.
I didn’t mean physically.
Not completely.
But he understood.
“I know.””
“You don’t get to disappear again.””
For a moment, we just looked at each other.
Then Daniel nodded.
“Okay.””
It was the first time he accepted something without fighting.
We continued moving.
At the end of the passage was a metal door.
Victor opened it with a key hidden around his neck.
I noticed.
Another secret.
Another thing nobody told me.
We stepped outside behind an abandoned building several streets away.
The night air hit my face.
Freedom.
But only for a second.
Because Margaret immediately pulled out her phone.
“No signal.””
Daniel looked around.
“They must have blocked communication.””
“Who?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
I was tired of that.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at me.
I took a breath.
“I want the complete truth before we move another step.””
Daniel sighed.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the road.
“We are being chased by people who know my children exist because of something your family did.””
My voice cracked.
“I deserve to know why.””
Victor looked at Margaret.
Margaret nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
She sat on an old wooden bench outside the building.
“The truth started before your sons were born.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then start.””
Margaret looked at Daniel.
“When Daniel’s father discovered he was sick, he changed his will.””
Daniel looked away.
“He didn’t trust Lucas.””
“Why?””
Margaret’s face became hard.
“Because Lucas believed power belonged to whoever could take it.””
Victor added quietly:
“He hurt people to get what he wanted.””
I looked at him.
“You knew him?””
Victor nodded.
“I worked for the Hale family.””
“Doing what?””
A pause.
“Protecting secrets.””
That answer made my stomach turn.
Margaret continued.
“When your sons were born, the inheritance became a problem.””
“Because Eli was born first.””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Lucas believed that if Eli disappeared, the inheritance would eventually go to him.””
“But Daniel was alive.””
Margaret nodded.
“Daniel refused to cooperate.””
I looked at my husband.
“So you tried to protect Eli?””
“Yes.””
“By letting me believe he was dead?””
His face fell.
“I thought I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
“I know.””
That hurt.
Because he wasn’t defending himself anymore.
He was accepting the damage.
Eli had been quiet the entire time.
Too quiet.
I turned.
“Eli?””
He was staring at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you come for me?””
The question destroyed the silence.
Daniel looked like he had been waiting eight years to hear it.
“I tried.””
Eli shook his head.
“But you didn’t.””
Daniel swallowed.
“No.””
“Why?””
Daniel sat down in front of him.
Not as a father.
Not as an authority.
Just as a man who had failed a child.
“Because every time I got close, they moved you.””
Eli’s face tightened.
“Who?””
“Your aunt.””
A flicker crossed Eli’s expression.
“Marissa?””
Daniel nodded.
“She was paid to hide you.””
Eli stepped back.
“My aunt?””
“I’m sorry.””
Eli looked confused.
“But she took care of me.””
Everyone went silent.
Because that was the complicated truth.
The people who hurt us are not always cruel every second.
Sometimes they are the same people who feed us.
Clothe us.
Tell us bedtime stories.
And that makes the betrayal harder.
“Did she hate me?”” Eli asked.
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“No.””
A pause.
“She was scared.””
“Scared of who?””
Nobody answered.
Then a voice came from behind us.
“She was scared of me.””
Everyone turned.
Lucas stood at the edge of the street.
Alone.
No guards.
No weapon.
Just standing there.
Like he had all the time in the world.
Daniel immediately stepped in front of us.
“You shouldn’t have found this place.””
Lucas smiled.
“You always underestimate me.””
Margaret stood.
“Lucas.””
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
“You’re still protecting him?””
She looked at the boys.
“I’m protecting them.””
Lucas looked at Ethan and Eli.
Then smiled sadly.
“That’s the problem with all of you.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“You think this is about money.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
And for some reason, I believed him.
Lucas walked closer.
Daniel warned:
“Stay back.””
Lucas ignored him.
“You want the truth, Emma?””
I didn’t answer.
He continued.
“Your sons were never valuable because of the inheritance.””
I looked at Eli.
“Then why?””
Lucas reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he only pulled out a small envelope.
He held it toward me.
“Because your sons are proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel didn’t move.
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Lucas’s expression became cold.
“The night your sons were born, Daniel didn’t discover a family secret.””
He looked at me.
“He discovered a crime.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“What crime?””
Lucas smiled faintly.
“The hospital where you gave birth was not hiding Eli’s disappearance.””
A pause.
“It was hiding something else.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
Daniel looked broken.
“Emma…”
Lucas opened the envelope.
Inside was a document.
A birth certificate.
But not one I recognized.
He handed it to me.
My hands shook as I read it.
The names.
The date.
The hospital.
Everything matched.
Except one thing.
The mother’s name.
My eyes widened.
“That’s impossible.””
Lucas watched me carefully.
“Yes.””
My voice barely worked.
“No.””
Because the document said something impossible.
Something that changed everything.
According to the record…
Eli and Ethan were not registered as Daniel’s children.
They were registered as the children of another man.
A man whose name I had never heard.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is Thomas Reed?””
Daniel’s face went completely pale.
And for the first time…
Lucas looked afraid.
Because even he didn’t expect me to ask that name.
Then Margaret whispered:
“Thomas Reed was the man who was supposed to be your husband.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
And then Daniel said the sentence that shattered my entire understanding of my own life.
“Emma…”
May you like
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“You need to know the truth about who you were before you met me.””
