Chapter 8: The Life They Stole From Me

The name stayed in my mind.

Thomas Reed.

A stranger.

A name from a life I didn’t remember.

A name that everyone around me seemed to know except me.

I looked at Daniel.

My husband.

The man I had loved.

The man who held my hand when I gave birth.

The man who cried beside me when we thought we lost Eli.

And now I was standing in front of him, wondering if I had ever truly known him at all.

“Explain.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel looked at me like he was searching for the right words.

There were none.

“There are things you don’t remember.””

I stared at him.

“I remember my life.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You remember the life you were given.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret looked away.

Victor stayed silent.

Lucas watched me carefully.

And suddenly I understood.

Everyone here had a piece of my story.

Everyone except me.

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Before you met me, you knew Thomas.””

I frowned.

“No.””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

“You were engaged to him.””

The world seemed to tilt.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“I would remember being engaged to someone.””

Daniel nodded.

“You would.””

A pause.

“But you don’t remember.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

That was becoming a pattern.

I stepped closer.

“Why don’t I remember?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because of the accident.””

The word felt familiar.

Accident.

I had heard it before.

But I had never understood what it meant.

“What accident?””

Margaret whispered:

“The one that changed everything.””

I looked at her.

“Stop speaking like I’m a child.””

She lowered her eyes.

“You’re right.””

Then she continued.

“Eight years ago, before you gave birth, you were involved in a car accident.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

“I was pregnant.””

“Yes.””

“My doctor told me I was stressed because of the pregnancy.””

Daniel looked away.

“Because that was easier to explain.””

My hands began shaking.

“What happened?””

Daniel swallowed.

“You suffered a head injury.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“No.””

“You lost parts of your memory.””

I stared at him.

“That’s not possible.””

“It is.””

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Silence.

The silence answered before anyone could.

I looked at Daniel.

“You didn’t tell me.””

His face broke.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if you remembered everything…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“Then I would lose you.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“You let me live inside a fake life because you were afraid?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

My anger rose.

“You don’t get to call that love.””

“I know.””

The answer stopped me.

Because he wasn’t fighting.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He knew.

He knew what he had done.

Lucas stepped forward.

“And Thomas was the only person who knew the truth.””

I turned toward him.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

My patience disappeared.

“Where is he?””

Lucas looked at Daniel.

Then said:

“He died.””

The words landed heavily.

“When?””

“Two months before you met Daniel.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Lucas nodded.

“Because you were told a different story.””

My heart raced.

“What story?””

Daniel whispered:

“That Thomas abandoned you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Margaret continued.

“After the accident, someone convinced you Thomas left because he didn’t want the responsibility.””

I felt sick.

“But he didn’t?””

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

Lucas looked at the ground.

“He was murdered.””

The night became completely silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

I stared.

“By who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked at Lucas.

“You know.””

Lucas’s expression hardened.

“I know enough.””

I looked between them.

“What does this have to do with my sons?””

Daniel answered.

“Thomas discovered something about the hospital.””

“What?””

“The hospital wasn’t just hiding Eli’s disappearance.””

He paused.

“It was hiding illegal experiments.””

I felt a chill.

“What kind of experiments?””

Margaret’s face turned pale.

“Genetic records.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel looked at Ethan and Eli.

“The hospital was collecting information from newborn children.””

I looked at my sons.

“Why?””

“Because they were studying inheritance patterns.””

The words sounded unreal.

“But why would anyone care about babies?””

Daniel looked at Eli.

“Because some families have traits they consider valuable.””

I felt anger rising.

“They treated my children like objects.””

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“That’s why I hid Eli.””

I stared.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

“You should have let me choose.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

Every apology felt too late.

Because apologies couldn’t give Eli back eight years.

They couldn’t erase the nights he spent alone.

They couldn’t erase the years I spent grieving.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Mom?””

I turned.

He looked scared.

“Is Eli sick?””

The question broke through everything.

“No.””

I immediately crouched beside him.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Then why do they keep talking about him like he’s something special?””

I looked at my son.

And I realized something.

Ethan didn’t care about inheritance.

He didn’t care about family power.

He cared about his brother.

I pulled both boys close.

“Because some adults forget children are people.””

Eli leaned against me.

Quietly.

Like he was still unsure if he was allowed.

Lucas watched us.

Then he said something unexpected.

“I didn’t want this.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You expect us to believe that?””

Lucas looked at his brother.

“I wanted the inheritance.””

A pause.

“But not like this.””

I frowned.

“Then why did you come after Eli?””

His face changed.

For the first time, I saw something human.

Pain.

“Because I found out what the hospital was really doing.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You knew?””

Lucas nodded.

“I found documents after our father died.””

Margaret looked shocked.

“You never told us.””

“Because I was trying to find out who was involved.””

Victor stared at him.

“And?””

Lucas looked at me.

“I found out Thomas was close to exposing everything.””

My breath caught.

“Thomas knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he died because of it?””

Lucas didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

Then Daniel looked at Lucas.

“You weren’t trying to kill Eli.””

Lucas shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone went still.

“Then what were you doing?””

Lucas looked at Eli.

“I was trying to find him before they did.””

My mind struggled to process everything.

The villain wasn’t the villain.

The hero wasn’t the hero.

Everyone had hidden things.

Everyone had lied.

And somehow, my children were still the ones paying the price.

Then Victor’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed instantly.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“They found the old records.””

Daniel went pale.

“What records?””

Victor looked at me.

“The original birth files.””

I felt a strange fear.

“What does that mean?””

Victor swallowed.

“It means they know the truth about the twins.””

Lucas frowned.

“Which truth?””

Victor looked at Ethan and Eli.

“The truth that changes everything.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“What truth?””

Victor looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“Eli wasn’t the only baby they changed.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Victor continued.

“The hospital didn’t separate one twin from his family.””

He looked at Ethan.

“They separated both of them.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“What are you saying?””

Victor’s voice dropped.

“The boys you raised…”

A pause.

“The boys everyone believed they knew…”

He looked at the two children.

“Neither of them was supposed to leave that hospital with the identities they have now.””

I stared at Ethan.

Then Eli.

My sons.

My whole world.

And suddenly, for the first time…

I wondered if I had lost more than one child eight years ago.

Maybe I had lost the truth about both of them.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*Ask Daniel why Ethan’s DNA was changed.*

I looked up.

Daniel’s face had gone completely white.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what that message meant.

May you like

And this time…

There was no excuse left.
