Chapter 12: The Truth About My Birth Certificate

I stared at the recorder.

My birth certificate?

I had no idea what my mother could have meant. I'd seen the document dozens of times over the years. Dad kept a copy in the safe with my passport and school records.

My name was printed clearly on it.

Lily Eleanor Young.

My mother's name appeared beneath the section marked Mother.

My father's name appeared beneath Father.

What could possibly be wrong with it?

Dad looked as confused as I felt.

“Play the rest,” he whispered.

Officer Daniels checked that the recording had been saved, then pressed the button again.

My mother's voice returned.

“Mark, I need you to listen carefully. I never wanted to keep this from you, but I was afraid of what would happen if the wrong person discovered it.””

There was a small rustling sound.

“I have spoken to Evelyn. She has the original documents. She knows what I want for Lily, and she promised to protect her if anything happens to me.””

Dad gripped the arm of his chair.

“What documents?”” he murmured.

The recording continued.

“Lily is your daughter. Nothing can change that. You raised her, you loved her, and you were there for every moment that mattered. But there is something about the circumstances of her birth that I should have explained years ago.””

I felt as though the floor had shifted beneath me.

Dad looked at me.

“Lily, sweetheart—”

“Please,” I whispered.

“Let her finish.””

My mother's voice trembled.

“Vanessa knows part of the truth. She was there when I made the decision, and she promised she would never use it against us. I believed her.””

A pause.

“But I was wrong.””

In the background, something clattered.

Then my mother's voice dropped to a whisper.

“If Vanessa ever tells you that Lily doesn't belong in your family, do not believe her. If she ever claims that Lily's inheritance should go to someone else, ask Evelyn to show you the original record.””

The file ended abruptly.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Mrs. Hart.

“What original record?””

She was already opening the estate folder.

“I don't know exactly which document Eleanor meant, but I suspect it may be connected to the yellow envelope she referenced in her earlier letter.””

“Didn't we already open that?””

“Yes. But this is different.””

She searched through the folder, removing copies of the trust agreement, medical correspondence, and several sealed pages.

Finally, she found a thin envelope marked with my name.

Her expression tightened.

“This should have been kept separately.””

“Why?”” Dad asked.

“Because it contains restricted records concerning Eleanor's earlier legal arrangements.””

She placed the envelope in front of him.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“No.””

Officer Daniels rose immediately.

“Sit down, ma'am.””

“You cannot show them that.””

Mrs. Hart looked at her.

“You know what this is?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I know what Eleanor wanted. I know she never wanted Lily to find out.””

“Why?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me, tears running down her face.

“Because it would destroy everything you believe about your family.””

I felt a coldness spread through my chest.

“Then tell me.””

“I can't.””

“You accused me of stealing. You tried to take my mother's money. You lied about how you knew her, and now we have a recording of you admitting that you delayed getting her medical help. What could possibly be worse than that?””

Vanessa looked down.

For several seconds, she seemed unable to answer.

Then she whispered, “I made a promise.””

“To whom?””

She didn't answer.

Officer Daniels asked her to sit back down. She obeyed, trembling, while Mrs. Hart carefully opened the envelope.

Inside were two documents.

The first was a certified copy of a record from a hospital where my mother had received treatment before I was born.

The second was a handwritten statement signed by Eleanor Young and witnessed by Evelyn Hart.

Mrs. Hart read the hospital record first.

Her eyes moved across the page, then stopped.

“What's wrong?”” Dad asked.

She looked at him.

“This document indicates that Eleanor had been admitted to the hospital under an earlier name.””

Dad frowned.

“Her maiden name was Ward.””

“Not before that.””

Mrs. Hart turned the document toward us.

The name printed near the top was unfamiliar.

*Eleanor Bell.*

Dad stared at it.

“Bell?””

Eric, who had remained silent near the window, suddenly lifted his head.

“My mother's maiden name was Bell,” he said.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

My heart began to pound.

“What does that mean?””

Mrs. Hart didn't answer immediately. She opened the second document and examined the signature.

“This appears to be a declaration Eleanor made concerning her legal identity and family history. But I need to check it against the original records before I can tell you what it establishes.””

Dad looked from the page to Eric.

“Are you saying Eleanor was related to Vanessa's family?””

Eric shook his head slowly.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa began to cry harder.

“Please don't do this.””

I turned toward her.

“Do what? Tell the truth?””

She pressed her hands against her face.

“You don't understand. I was trying to protect you.””

“From my own birth certificate?””

She lowered her hands.

“You were never supposed to find these documents.””

Dad stood.

“Vanessa, stop speaking in riddles and tell us what you know.””

She looked at him for a long time.

Then her gaze shifted to me.

“Eleanor was my closest friend before you met her,” she whispered.

“She trusted me with something no one else knew.””

“What?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“She told me the truth about your birth before you were old enough to understand it. I promised her I would protect you, no matter what happened.””

“Then why did you try to take my inheritance?””

“Because Eric was desperate, and I thought I could fix everything before anyone found out what I'd done.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

Vanessa looked toward the hospital record.

“Because the money isn't the only thing Eleanor left you.””

Mrs. Hart picked up the handwritten statement and read the final paragraph.

Her face went pale.

“Mark,” she said, “we need to verify this before drawing any conclusions.””

Dad reached for the page.

“What does it say?””

She turned the document toward him.

At the bottom was a sentence written in my mother's handwriting.

If Lily ever learns the truth, make sure she understands that the man who raised her is still her father in every way that matters.

Dad's eyes filled with tears.

I stared at the words.

“What truth?””

Mrs. Hart took a slow breath.

“The hospital records suggest that the circumstances of your birth were more complicated than your parents told you. But this document alone does not establish your biological parentage.””

I turned toward Dad.

“Do you know who my biological father is?””

Dad's face crumpled.

He opened his mouth, but no words came.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Vanessa began whispering something beneath her breath.

“I'm sorry, Eleanor. I'm sorry.””

I stepped closer to her.

“Who is he?””

She looked up at me.

Then she looked at Eric.

And the expression on her face changed from fear to resignation.

“Lily,” she whispered, “your mother made me promise never to tell you because she was afraid of what your biological father would do if he ever found you.””

Dad staggered backward.

Eric went completely still.

Mrs. Hart tightened her grip on the document.

Vanessa took a trembling breath.

“Your biological father is—”
