Chapter 3: The Money in My Mother's Name
The document looked ordinary.
White paper. Black ink. A blue signature line near the bottom.
But the moment Officer Daniels read the heading, he stopped the video.
“Lily,” he said carefully, “do you recognize this document?””
I leaned toward the screen.
My name appeared near the top, followed by the words Beneficiary Account Authorization.
“No,” I whispered.
“I've never seen that before.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“It's a routine financial document. You're making something out of nothing.””
Officer Daniels glanced at her.
“Then you shouldn't have any difficulty explaining why you took it from your husband's locked study.””
“He asked me to organize his paperwork.””
“Did he ask you to remove this particular document?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Officer Ruiz stood near the front door, speaking quietly into her radio. Outside, red and blue lights washed across the windows as another patrol car pulled into the driveway.
The house no longer felt like home.
It felt like a place where everyone was waiting for the next terrible thing to happen.
I kept staring at the phone.
“Can you play the rest?”” I asked.
Officer Daniels nodded.
Vanessa appeared on the screen again, opening the blue folder. She lifted several bank statements, flipped through them, and placed them on the desk.
Then she took a photograph of a signature page with her own phone.
She was careful.
She checked the hallway before she moved anything.
She even wiped the edge of the desk with her sleeve.
But Chloe's camera had captured every second.
The recording continued.
Vanessa pulled a folded sheet from her handbag and placed it beside the authorization form. She compared the two pages, moving her finger between the signatures.
Then she spoke into her phone.
“Yes, I have the form,” she said.
“The transfer should be processed Monday.””
A man's voice answered faintly through the speaker.
“What if Mark notices?””
Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.
“He won't. He trusts me to handle the bills, and the money has been sitting there untouched for years.””
“How much?””
“Enough to solve everything.””
“That's not a number, Vanessa.””
She lowered her voice.
“Eighty-four thousand dollars.””
My hand flew to my mouth.
Eighty-four thousand dollars.
The money my mother had saved for my future.
The money Dad had promised would help me go to college.
Officer Daniels paused the video.
“Do you know who that man is?””
Vanessa's lips pressed together.
He continued watching.
On the screen, Vanessa slipped the papers into her handbag.
Then she made another call.
This time, her voice was angrier.
“I can't transfer anything else until the first payment clears. I told you I was handling it.””
A pause.
“No, the necklace wasn't supposed to be part of this. Lily found the account statements, and she's started asking questions.””
My skin went cold.
I'd asked Vanessa about the statements only once.
Two days earlier, Dad had asked me to look for an envelope in his study. While searching the bottom drawer, I'd noticed that several pages were missing from a bank statement bearing my name.
I had brought it to Vanessa because she was the only adult home.
She had snatched the paper from my hands and told me I was invading my father's privacy.
Now I understood why.
Vanessa had seen the questions coming.
She had stolen from my mother's account, and she was afraid I would tell Dad.
The necklace was never just a necklace.
It was supposed to make me look like a liar before I could expose her.
Officer Daniels shut off the video.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he turned to Vanessa.
“Ma'am, I need you to explain the transfer you just described.””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“That was a private conversation. You can't simply assume it means what you think it means.””
“I'm not assuming anything. I'm asking you to explain it.””
“The money belongs to my husband.””
“The recording identifies it as an account intended for Lily's education.””
“Her father controls the account!””
“Then we'll ask him.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“You people have no idea what this family has been through.””
I couldn't stop looking at her.
“You told me my mother didn't leave enough money for college.””
Vanessa turned toward me.
“Lily—”
“You told me Dad was struggling to pay the mortgage. You made me stop taking art classes because you said we couldn't afford them.””
“Don't be dramatic.””
“You sold my mother's bracelet. You took her brooch. And you stole eighty-four thousand dollars from my education fund.””
“I said don't be dramatic!””
Her shout bounced off the walls.
Chloe began crying again.
Officer Ruiz stepped between Vanessa and the children.
“That's enough,” she said.
“You need to calm down.””
Vanessa pointed at me.
“She has been trying to destroy me since the day I married her father! She has never accepted me!””
I stood up slowly.
“Because you never wanted to be my family. You wanted my mother gone, her things gone, and now her money.””
The words hung in the air.
For the first time, Vanessa didn't have a quick answer.
Officer Daniels asked Officer Ruiz to keep her near the living room while he made arrangements for the financial allegations to be documented and investigated. He explained that the recording could be important evidence, but that they would need to verify the account records and determine exactly what had happened to the money.
He also told Vanessa that the necklace allegation was no longer being treated as a simple family misunderstanding.
Then he asked for my father's number.
My hands shook as I gave it to him.
Dad answered on the fourth ring.
“Lily?”” he said.
“What's going on? I've had two missed calls from your house.””
I tried to speak, but my voice broke.
“Dad, the police are here.””
“What? Are you hurt?””
“No. But Vanessa said I stole her necklace, and—”
“Stop.”” His voice sharpened.
“Where is Vanessa right now?””
“She's in the living room.””
“Put the officer on the phone, please.””
Officer Daniels explained the situation in a low, professional voice. I watched my father's expression change from confusion to disbelief, even though I could only hear his side of the conversation.
“No,” Dad said.
“Lily wouldn't steal anything.””
He listened.
Then he sat down heavily on the edge of the sofa.
“What did you say was on the recording?””
Officer Daniels answered.
Dad closed his eyes.
“Eighty-four thousand?””
My stomach tightened.
He knew about the money.
At least, he knew something.
When Officer Daniels handed me the phone, Dad's voice was quiet.
“Lily, honey, listen to me. I'm coming home tonight.””
“Dad, what is happening?””
“I don't know everything yet.””
“Did you know about the transfer?””
“No,” he said immediately.
“I knew the education account existed. I did not authorize anyone to take that money.””
“Then why did you sound like you knew what the officer was talking about?””
He was silent for a moment.
“Because I got a message from the bank this afternoon. There was an attempted transfer, and the signature didn't look right. I was going to call them first thing tomorrow.””
I stared at the phone.
“Did you tell Vanessa?””
“No.””
“Then how did she know?””
Dad didn't answer.
Behind me, Vanessa had gone unnaturally still.
I turned toward her.
She wasn't looking at the officers anymore.
She was looking at the phone in my hand.
And she looked terrified.
Dad's voice came through again.
“Lily, there is something else you need to know. Your mother didn't just leave you an education account.””
I swallowed.
“What else did she leave me?””
“A letter. She gave it to me before she died, and she made me promise to keep it safe until you turned eighteen.””
Vanessa made a small, strangled sound.
Dad heard it through the phone.
“Is Vanessa still there?”” he asked.
“Yes.””
“Then don't let her touch anything in my study. Especially the blue folder.””
Officer Daniels looked up.
“Why the blue folder, sir?””
Dad took a shaky breath.
“Because the letter was inside it. And if Vanessa has taken that letter, then she may know something about the money that I still don't.””
The room fell silent.
Officer Daniels looked at the empty space where the blue folder should have been.
Then he turned to Vanessa.
“Ma'am, where is the letter?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
But this time, she wasn't pretending.
“I burned it,” she whispered.
May you like
Dad's voice erupted from the phone.
“*You did what?*”
