Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Kept

My father arrived eleven minutes later.

I knew it was him before the door opened because I heard his car pull into the driveway, tires crunching over the gravel, followed by the unmistakable slam of his driver's door.

Then the front door swung open.

“Lily!””

Dad crossed the living room in three long strides and pulled me into his arms.

He smelled like cold air, coffee, and the cedar cologne he'd worn for as long as I could remember. For one brief second, I was eight years old again, sitting on his shoulders in the pumpkin patch while Mom laughed and took photographs.

Then I remembered the necklace.

The police.

The blue folder.

I clung to him anyway.

“I'm sorry I wasn't here,” he whispered into my hair.

I stepped back and looked at him.

“Did you know Vanessa was stealing from Mom?””

His face crumpled.

“No.””

“Did you know she was planning to blame me?””

“No, Lily. I swear to you.””

“Then what did Mom discover?””

Dad glanced toward the dining table.

Vanessa was sitting with her arms crossed, watching us as if she'd been waiting for this moment all evening.

“Not here,” he said quietly.

“Why not?””

“Because some of this is complicated.””

“I'm sixteen, Dad. I'm not stupid.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know you're not.””

“Then stop talking to me like I'm too young to know what my own mother left me.””

The words struck him. I saw it in the way his shoulders dropped.

He pulled out a chair and sat down opposite me.

“All right,” he said.

“I'll tell you what I know.””

Vanessa immediately stood.

“Mark, please. We need to talk privately.””

Dad didn't look at her.

“No.””

“I'm your wife.””

“And Lily is my daughter.””

“She has been trying to turn you against me for years!””

Dad finally raised his eyes.

“Sit down, Vanessa.””

She remained standing.

“I have done everything for this family.””

“Then start by explaining the $84,000.””

Her mouth opened.

“Eric needed help.””

Dad stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa's face tightened, but she continued as though the truth had slipped out and there was no point putting it back.

“My brother's business was in trouble. He had loans coming due. The bank was threatening to seize his equipment, and he promised he could repay everything within a few months.””

“So you tried to transfer Lily's education money to him?””

“I was going to replace it!””

“With what?””

She looked away.

“You don't understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa pressed her palms against the table.

“I thought I could fix it before you noticed.””

Dad leaned forward.

“You forged a financial document?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize a transfer from an account you had no right to access?””

“I was trying to save my brother!””

Dad stared at her in disbelief.

“You were willing to destroy Lily's future to save Eric's business?””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“He's my brother! What was I supposed to do, let him lose everything?””

“You could have asked me.””

“You would have said no!””

“Because it's not your money to give away!””

Vanessa went silent.

Dad rubbed his forehead.

Then he turned toward me.

“Your mother set up the education trust before she became ill. She was very specific about how the money was to be used. I was responsible for overseeing it until you turned eighteen, and withdrawals had to be supported by proper documentation.””

“Then how did Vanessa get access to the account?””

“I don't know yet. The bank contacted me yesterday because an attempted transfer triggered a verification check.””

I thought of the document in Chloe's video.

“Was the signature yours?””

“No.””

“Then why was there a form with your name on it?””

Dad shook his head.

“That's one of the things Mrs. Hart needs to examine.””

Vanessa pushed her chair backward.

“This is ridiculous. I didn't take a single dollar.””

“You admitted the transfer was intended for Eric,” Dad said.

“I said I was trying to help him. The bank stopped it, didn't they?””

“That doesn't make what you did acceptable.””

She looked at me.

“This is what you wanted, isn't it? You wanted him to throw me out so you could have the house and all the money.””

I stood so fast my chair knocked against the wall.

“I wanted you to leave my backpack alone!””

“Lily,” Dad said gently.

“No! She put a necklace in my bag and called the police. She made them think I was a criminal. She wanted everyone to believe I was stealing because she was stealing from me!””

Vanessa struck the table with her palm.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed!””

Officer Daniels stepped closer.

“Ma'am, lower your voice.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Stay out of this!””

“That is enough,” Dad said.

His voice was quiet, but it filled the room.

Vanessa stared at him.

He looked at the woman he'd married three years after my mother's funeral, the woman who had promised to help him raise me and make our broken house feel whole again.

“I trusted you,” he said.

“I brought you into this home because I believed you loved me and cared about my daughter.””

“I do love you.””

“Then why did you do this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell us the truth.

Instead, she pointed at me.

“Because she's never given me a chance!””

Dad went very still.

“Lily was a child when you married me.””

“She hated me from the beginning.””

“She was grieving her mother!””

“And I was supposed to spend the rest of my life being punished for that?””

The room fell silent.

I could hear the clock ticking above the fireplace.

Dad stood slowly.

“No one asked you to replace her mother. We asked you to love her.””

Vanessa shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“I did love her.””

“No,” I whispered.

“You loved having control over her.””

She looked at me with such fury that I instinctively stepped behind Dad.

Officer Daniels immediately moved between us.

“That's enough for tonight.””

Vanessa sank into her chair.

For the first time, she looked exhausted rather than dangerous.

But I didn't feel sorry for her.

Not after what she'd done.

Dad took my hand and led me toward the kitchen. He wanted to speak without Vanessa interrupting.

“Lily, there's something about your mother I should have told you earlier.””

My stomach tightened.

“Is it about the letter?””

He nodded.

“Your mother became suspicious of Vanessa before she died. At the time, I didn't understand why. I thought she was frightened by her illness, and I assumed she was looking for someone to blame.””

“What did she say?””

Dad looked down at our joined hands.

“She found a bank statement with an unfamiliar account number. She believed someone had been using her identity to request information about her estate.””

I stared at him.

“Vanessa?””

“I don't know. Your mother never gave me enough information to prove that. But she asked me to promise that you would receive the letter when you turned eighteen, no matter what happened.””

“Why eighteen?””

“Because she'd arranged for you to have full control over certain documents and assets at that age. She wanted you to be old enough to understand everything.””

I swallowed.

“And you kept it from me for six years?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You were protecting yourself from a difficult conversation.””

He flinched.

I immediately regretted the words, but I couldn't take them back.

Dad drew a shaky breath.

“Maybe you're right.””

My anger softened, though it didn't disappear.

“Can we see Mrs. Hart tomorrow?””

“Yes. I've already arranged an appointment.””

“Can I read Mom's letter?””

“Yes,” he said.

“You deserve to know what it says.””

We returned to the living room.

Vanessa had stopped crying. She was staring at the fireplace, her expression distant.

As Dad passed her, she spoke without looking up.

“Mark, you should ask your daughter what she found in your study before accusing me of hiding everything.””

Dad stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa slowly raised her eyes toward me.

“Tell him, Lily.””

My stomach dropped.

I had no idea what she meant.

Dad turned toward me.

“What did you find in my study?””

“Nothing,” I said.

“I only noticed the missing bank papers.””

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“Then perhaps you should check the drawer where your mother kept her old photographs.””

Dad went pale.

“What?””

Vanessa stood and straightened her sweater.

“Ask yourself why your wife hid a photograph of a man she never told you about.””

She walked past Officer Daniels, stopping just long enough to whisper something I almost missed.

“Your mother wasn't as innocent as you think.””

May you like

Then she looked toward the front door.

And for the first time that evening, I saw my father look frightened of someone other than Vanessa.
