Chapter 4: The Woman Who Came Back
The sound of the key turning in the lock made my entire body freeze.
Dad reacted instantly.
He grabbed the folder from the table and pulled me behind him.
It was the same movement he had made the night before.
The same protective instinct.
But this time, his eyes were different.
Before, he had been shocked.
Now, he was ready.
The front door opened slowly.
Vanessa stepped inside.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t angry.
She was calm.
That scared me more.
She placed her purse on the table and looked around the room.
Her eyes landed on the documents.
Then on Rachel.
Then on Dad.
“I see you found someone to tell you stories.””
Dad didn’t move.
“Where did you get a key?””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
She gave a small laugh.
“This is my house too, Michael.””
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“It’s my house. You live here.””
The words hit her.
For a second, her confident expression disappeared.
Then she recovered.
“I can’t believe you’re talking to me like this.””
Dad stepped forward.
“I can’t believe I trusted you.””
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she looked at me.
And something in her face changed.
The anger returned.
“You told him?””
I felt my stomach drop.
Dad immediately moved closer.
“Don’t talk to her.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“You couldn’t keep your mouth shut for one day?””
My hands started shaking.
Because that was the Vanessa I knew.
The one who only showed up when nobody else was watching.
Dad’s voice hardened.
“Enough.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
“No, you don’t.””
She stepped closer.
“You’re destroying this family over a woman who abandoned you.””
Rachel interrupted.
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know enough.””
Rachel opened the folder.
“I know you signed for documents that weren’t yours.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
Dad saw it.
I saw it.
Vanessa looked at Rachel carefully.
“You should leave.””
Rachel didn’t move.
“This isn’t your decision.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You always were too loyal to people who didn’t deserve it.””
The sentence confused me.
But Rachel’s expression changed.
Like she knew exactly what Vanessa meant.
Dad noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“She knows.””
Everyone looked at her.
She smiled.
“Ask her.””
Dad turned to Rachel.
“Knows what?””
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
Then she slowly sat down.
“I didn’t want to tell you like this.””
Dad’s face tightened.
“Tell me what?””
Rachel took a breath.
“Three years ago, when Elena disappeared, I wasn’t just the person who processed the paperwork.””
The room went silent.
“I was the one who spoke with her.””
My heart jumped.
“You talked to my mom?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“What did she say?””
Rachel’s eyes softened.
“She said she was scared.””
Dad looked shocked.
“Scared of what?””
Rachel looked toward Vanessa.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Rachel answered.
“She was scared someone was trying to make her look like she abandoned Lily.””
Vanessa immediately spoke.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Rachel continued.
“She came to the office because she wanted to fight for custody.””
Dad stared.
“But she disappeared.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because she believed something had happened to her reputation.””
“What does that mean?””
“She thought someone was building a case against her.””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
The silence between them was unbearable.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re all acting like I’m some criminal.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew yet.
But everyone knew something was wrong.
She walked toward the table.
“I raised Lily.””
Dad stopped her.
“You hurt her.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I disciplined her.””
“You pulled her hair.””
Her expression flickered.
Then she smiled.
“You have one recording.””
Dad looked at the tablet.
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“I have years of questions.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“What questions?””
Dad looked toward me.
“Why Lily stopped talking about her mother.””
My throat tightened.
“Why she started apologizing every time she made a mistake.””
He looked back at Vanessa.
“Why my daughter looked afraid every time you walked into a room.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I gave her structure.””
“You gave her fear.””
The words landed harder than anything else.
Vanessa became quiet.
Then she picked up the letters from the table.
Dad immediately reached for them.
“Put those down.””
She held them against her chest.
“You really want to know what happened?””
Everyone froze.
Dad stared.
“What?””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“I didn’t want to tell you.””
Rachel whispered:
“Vanessa…”
But Vanessa kept going.
“Because I knew you wouldn’t understand.””
Dad’s voice was low.
“Understand what?””
She looked at me.
Then back at him.
“That Elena wasn’t perfect.””
Nobody spoke.
Of course she wasn’t.
Nobody was.
But Vanessa said it like it was a weapon.
“She was unstable.””
Dad’s face tightened.
“Careful.””
“She was struggling.””
“She was Lily’s mother.””
“And she was going to take Lily away.””
There it was.
The truth hidden inside the lies.
Not everything.
But enough.
Dad stepped closer.
“So you stopped her.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what did you do?””
She looked away.
That was the first time I saw something different.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“I tried to protect what we had.””
Dad stared.
“You manipulated custody papers.””
“No.””
“You hid her letters.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“You lied to Lily.””
Her eyes snapped toward him.
“She needed someone who stayed!””
The scream echoed through the house.
Then silence followed.
Vanessa’s chest rose and fell.
She looked at me.
“I was the one who packed your lunches.””
I said nothing.
“I was the one who helped you with homework.””
Still nothing.
“I was there.””
My voice came out quietly.
“You were there.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“Exactly.””
“But you weren’t kind.””
The words surprised me.
They surprised everyone.
I continued.
“You were there.””
I swallowed.
“But you never loved me.””
Vanessa’s face cracked.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Dad saw it too.
She looked away.
And for the first time, she had no answer.
A loud knock interrupted us.
Everyone turned.
Another knock.
This one louder.
Dad looked at the door.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
Then a woman’s voice came from outside.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow…
My heart knew it.
“Michael?””
Dad froze.
The color disappeared from his face.
The letters slipped from Vanessa’s hand.
The woman outside spoke again.
“Michael, please.””
Rachel stood slowly.
“Oh my God.””
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I know that voice.””
The doorknob moved.
Dad didn’t breathe.
Neither did I.
Then the door opened.
And a woman stepped inside.
She looked older than the pictures.
Tired.
Broken.
But her eyes…
Her eyes looked exactly like mine.
She looked at me.
One hand flew to her mouth.
“Lily?””
My knees almost gave out.
Dad whispered a name I had only seen written in letters.
“Elena.””
My mother stood in the doorway.
Alive.
And crying.
But before she could take a single step toward me, Vanessa whispered something that made everyone turn.
“She’s not supposed to be here.””
My father looked at her.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa backed away.
Because she realized too late.
May you like
She had just revealed the one thing she had been hiding for three years.
She knew my mother was coming back.
