Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Papers

Daniel stood in the doorway like he had every right to be there.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not the folder in his hand.

Not the cold expression on his face.

Not the way my mother stepped backward when she saw him.

It was the confidence.

He wasn’t surprised.

He wasn’t nervous.

He looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment.

My father immediately moved in front of me.

“Get out.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Michael.””

“Get out of my house.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“I see you finally learned how to ask questions.””

Dad’s hands tightened.

“You have five seconds.””

Daniel looked around the room.

His eyes passed over the letters.

The documents.

The broken window.

Then stopped on Vanessa.

For the first time, Daniel looked uncertain.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me you didn’t show them everything.””

Her face hardened.

“I didn’t.””

Daniel looked at the table.

“You did.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You don’t get to blame me.””

That sentence surprised everyone.

Because Vanessa sounded angry.

Not at us.

At him.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Careful.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You threatened me.””

Daniel looked at her.

A small smile appeared.

“Still dramatic after all these years.””

My father’s voice cut through the room.

“Do not speak to her like that.””

Daniel looked amused.

“You have no idea what she did.””

My mother’s face went pale.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“You really believe that?””

I felt my father tense beside me.

“Who are you?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I’m the person who helped you when your life was falling apart.””

“No.””

Dad’s voice was cold.

“You’re the person who helped destroy it.””

Daniel tilted his head.

“Interesting.””

He opened the folder.

“Because I have documents proving otherwise.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Where did you get those?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You always were curious.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“You remember me?””

“Of course.””

The way he said it made the room colder.

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

My father noticed.

“Rachel?””

She looked at him.

“I knew him from the law office.””

Daniel smiled.

“She did.””

Rachel’s voice became tense.

“But I didn’t know what he was doing.””

Daniel laughed.

“Of course you didn’t.””

My father looked at the folder.

“What’s inside?””

Daniel walked closer.

Dad immediately raised his hand.

“Stop.””

Daniel stopped.

Then he slowly placed the folder on the table.

“Evidence.””

My mother looked at it.

“What kind of evidence?””

Daniel looked directly at her.

“The kind that explains why you disappeared.””

My heart raced.

Because that was the question we had been chasing.

The night my mother vanished.

The truth everyone had been hiding.

My father opened the folder carefully.

Inside were printed emails.

Photographs.

Documents.

He looked through them.

Then his face changed.

“Elena…”

My mother stepped closer.

“What?””

Dad handed her one page.

She read it.

Then froze.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at the paper.

It was an email.

From my mother.

To someone.

But the words were strange.

Angry.

Desperate.

“I never sent this.””

Daniel smiled.

“Exactly.””

My father looked at him.

“You forged messages?””

Daniel shrugged.

“I corrected the story.””

Rachel picked up another page.

“These timestamps…”

She looked closer.

“They don’t match.””

Daniel’s smile faded slightly.

“What?””

“These emails were created after Elena disappeared.””

The room went silent.

My father looked at Daniel.

“You planted evidence.””

Daniel laughed.

“You’re making a lot of accusations.””

“No.””

Dad pointed at the papers.

“I’m seeing a pattern.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You’re emotional.””

My father’s eyes hardened.

“Don’t.””

Daniel stopped.

Because even he knew.

He had gone too far.

My mother looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

Vanessa didn’t look at her.

“Vanessa.””

Slowly, Vanessa looked up.

“I didn’t know everything.””

My mother’s voice broke.

“But you knew enough.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

For the first time, she looked less like a villain and more like someone who had realized she had made a terrible choice.

“I thought…”

She stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I thought if Elena disappeared, Lily would have a stable home.””

My chest tightened.

My father stared at her.

“You thought taking away her mother was helping her?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I thought I could give her what Elena couldn’t.””

My mother whispered:

“You never gave her love.””

Vanessa flinched.

“You don’t know what I did for her.””

“I know what you did to her.””

Silence.

Daniel interrupted.

“This is pointless.””

Everyone looked at him.

He picked up the folder.

“You’re all fighting over the wrong thing.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

My body went cold.

“There’s something nobody has told Lily.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Leave her out of this.””

Daniel smiled.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“She deserves to know.””

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Don’t listen.””

But I couldn’t look away.

“What?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel opened the folder again.

“Your mother didn’t disappear because of custody.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She disappeared because she found out what Vanessa and I were doing.””

My mother’s face went pale.

“Stop.””

Daniel continued.

“She discovered the documents.””

My father looked confused.

“What documents?””

Daniel smiled.

“The financial records.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel.””

He ignored her.

“She found out money was being moved.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“What money?””

Vanessa said nothing.

My father turned toward her.

“What money?””

Daniel answered.

“Your company’s money.””

The room went silent.

Dad stared.

“What?””

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“Three years ago, before Elena disappeared, she discovered someone had been transferring money from your business account.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“No.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Michael…”

“Tell me he’s lying.””

She didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

My father stepped back.

The betrayal on his face was worse than before.

“You stole from me?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was going to pay it back.””

Nobody moved.

The sentence destroyed whatever defense she had left.

Daniel smiled.

“Exactly.””

My mother looked at him.

“Why are you telling them this?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because you were always too stubborn.””

Then he turned toward my father.

“You want the truth?””

Dad stared.

“Yes.””

Daniel nodded.

“Fine.””

He pointed at Vanessa.

“She didn’t hide your wife’s letters because she hated Elena.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“She hid them because Elena knew the money was missing.””

My father’s face went pale.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“She was going to expose both of us.””

The room froze.

My mother grabbed the table for support.

“I knew it.””

Dad looked at her.

“What?””

She whispered:

“That’s why he followed me.””

Daniel smiled.

“You finally understand.””

My father stepped toward him.

“You sabotaged her car.””

Daniel said nothing.

But he didn’t deny it.

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“You tried to make me disappear.””

Daniel shrugged.

“I needed time.””

The words were so cold that even Vanessa looked horrified.

My father moved forward.

But before he could reach him, Daniel pulled out his phone.

“Before you do anything…”

Everyone stopped.

Daniel pressed a button.

A recording began playing.

My father’s own voice filled the room.

But it wasn’t from today.

It was from three years ago.

And in the recording, my father said something I had never heard before.

Something that changed everything.

“I know Elena would never abandon Lily.””

The room went silent.

Then another voice answered.

Daniel’s voice.

“Then we need to make sure everyone believes she did.””

My father looked at the phone.

His face turned completely pale.

Because he remembered.

He had heard that conversation before.

But he wasn’t the one who said it.

Daniel had recorded it.

And changed the story.

The recording continued.

Then came one final sentence.

A sentence that made my mother cover her mouth.

A sentence that revealed the last secret.

Daniel’s voice whispered:

“Once Elena is gone, Vanessa can become Lily’s only family.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then my father looked at Vanessa.

And asked the question that had been waiting three years.

“Did you know he planned to get rid of her?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

And after all the lies…

After all the secrets…

She finally answered.

“Yes.””

My father closed his eyes.

May you like

The truth had finally arrived.

But it was worse than any of us imagined.
