Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed

The question on the paper stayed on the table all night.

Ask Vanessa what happened the night Elena disappeared.

Nobody slept.

Nobody left.

The police had been called after the window was broken, but there wasn’t enough evidence to identify who had thrown the envelope. They took photographs, collected the broken glass, and asked questions.

Too many questions.

Questions that made Vanessa uncomfortable.

Questions that made my father quiet.

Questions that made my mother look like she was reliving the worst day of her life.

But the one person nobody questioned was the person standing in the middle of the room.

Vanessa.

Because everyone already knew.

She knew something.

Dad sat across from her at the kitchen table.

The same table where she had hurt me.

The same table where we had discovered the letters.

The same place where our family had fallen apart.

“Tell me what happened that night.””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

For the first time, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked like someone who had run out of places to hide.

“I already told you.””

“No.””

Dad’s voice was calm.

“And I’m done accepting half-truths.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You think I planned everything?””

“I think you know more than you told me.””

She looked away.

My mother sat beside me.

She kept glancing at me like she was afraid I would disappear.

I understood that feeling.

Because I was afraid too.

Not of her.

Of everything changing again.

Dad placed the envelope on the table.

“Someone sent this.””

Vanessa stared at the words.

Her face became pale.

“You shouldn’t have gotten that.””

Everyone froze.

Dad leaned forward.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

“I mean…”

“No.””

His eyes hardened.

“You said I shouldn’t have gotten it.””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked down.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then my mother spoke.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa looked up.

“You don’t get to ask me for anything.””

My mother’s face tightened.

“You took three years from me.””

Silence.

“I lost my daughter.””

Her voice shook.

“And you knew where I was.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I didn’t know everything.””

Dad stood.

“Then start with what you know.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And finally…

She spoke.

“The night Elena disappeared, she came here.””

My father froze.

“What?””

My mother’s breath caught.

“I came here?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Dad stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Why?””

Her voice became defensive.

“Because you were already broken.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She looked at him.

“Because Elena left after we argued.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

“No.””

My mother’s voice became stronger.

“I never argued with you that night.””

“You don’t remember?””

“I remember.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“That’s convenient.””

My father looked between them.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She came here to talk about custody.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

“She wanted Lily back.””

My mother immediately responded.

“I wanted to be part of Lily’s life.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You wanted to take her away.””

“No.””

The word came out with pain.

“I wanted my daughter.””

Dad closed his eyes.

Because he understood.

That one sentence hurt him more than anything.

Vanessa continued.

“She was angry.””

My mother shook her head.

“I was scared.””

“You were threatening to take Michael to court.””

“Because you were lying about me.””

Vanessa looked away.

The silence was answer enough.

Dad noticed.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“You were here.””

“Yes.””

“You were the last person to see her.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward my mother.

“No.””

Everyone looked confused.

“What?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“I wasn’t the last person.””

My father stepped closer.

“Who was?””

She hesitated.

And then said a name.

“Daniel.””

Rachel looked up.

“Your brother?””

Vanessa nodded.

My stomach tightened.

The investigator.

The person who helped change the custody papers.

The person who had been hiding behind documents and signatures.

“He came here that night.””

Dad stared.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“He wanted to talk to Elena.””

“About what?””

“I don’t know.””

My mother whispered:

“You do know.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because when I left this house that night, he followed me.””

The room became silent.

Dad looked at my mother.

“What?””

She looked down.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought nobody would believe me.””

“Why?””

“Because the last person I told was Vanessa.””

Everyone turned.

Dad looked at her.

“What?””

My mother’s voice shook.

“I told her Daniel was following me.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“And what did you say?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I told you that you were imagining things.””

My mother nodded.

“Exactly.””

My father stepped away from the table.

Like the room suddenly became too small.

“You knew.””

Vanessa looked up.

“Michael—”

“You knew she was scared.””

“I thought she was exaggerating.””

“But you knew.””

Vanessa’s silence answered.

I watched my father’s face.

I had never seen him look so betrayed.

Not angry.

Not even hurt.

Betrayed.

Because he wasn’t just discovering what Vanessa had done.

He was discovering what she had chosen not to do.

“What happened after Daniel followed you?””

My mother looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

Dad frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“I got into my car.””

She swallowed.

“I drove away.””

“And?””

“My car stopped working.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

“I thought it was an accident.””

My mother’s hands trembled.

“But then I realized someone had cut something under the hood.””

Dad went still.

“Did you report it?””

“I tried.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Because my phone was missing.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

Again.

No words.

Were needed.

My mother continued.

“I walked to a gas station.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“What happened there?””

“My brother picked me up.””

Dad frowned.

“Your brother?””

“Yes.””

My mother looked confused.

“He helped me.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father’s phone rang.

The screen showed a name.

Daniel.

Everyone froze.

Dad answered.

But before he could speak, a voice came through.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

“You found out about Elena.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“How did you get this number?””

The voice ignored him.

“You need to stop looking.””

My father tightened his grip on the phone.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Ask your wife.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

The man continued.

“She knows exactly what happened that night.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Dad stared at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“Daniel wouldn’t…”

My father stepped closer.

“Wouldn’t what?””

Vanessa looked at the phone.

Then at the envelope.

Then at my mother.

And finally at me.

Her voice was barely audible.

“Wouldn’t do this again.””

My blood ran cold.

Dad’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because the front door suddenly opened.

A man stood there.

Holding a folder.

Looking directly at my mother.

And smiling.

“Elena.””

My mother went pale.

Because she knew him.

May you like

And she whispered the words that made my father step in front of me.

“Daniel.””
