Chapter 11: The Hospital Room Confession

Thomas was in intensive care when we arrived.

His face was bruised, one arm was bandaged, and a monitor beside his bed displayed a steady heartbeat.

A nurse stopped us outside the room.

“Only one visitor at a time.””

I looked through the glass.

He was alive.

After everything, that was the only fact I could process.

Daniel spoke to the attending physician while Rebecca and I waited.

Finally, the doctor approached.

“Mr. Reed is conscious, but he has significant injuries. Keep the conversation short.””

I entered first.

Thomas opened his eyes.

“Maya.””

I moved beside his bed.

“Who did this to you?””

He tried to sit up.

I gently pushed his shoulder down.

“Don't move.””

His lips trembled.

“You came.””

“Of course I came.””

He looked at me for a long moment.

“You look like Claire.””

I swallowed.

“Why did you disappear?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Because I was a coward.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“No. It isn't.””

I pulled a chair closer.

“Tell me about my mother.””

His breathing became uneven.

“Your mother discovered that Robert was stealing money from Jonathan's company. But she didn't know how far it went.””

“Eleanor said Dad managed Jonathan's vehicles.””

Thomas nodded.

“Robert was responsible for the maintenance records. On the night Jonathan died, he signed off on the brakes.””

I felt cold.

“Did he cause the accident?””

Thomas looked away.

“I don't know whether he physically tampered with the car. But he knew something was wrong and approved it anyway.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

“I tried. Robert had already arranged for the maintenance records to disappear.””

“Then why didn't you tell Mom?””

“I did.””

Thomas swallowed painfully.

“She refused to believe Robert could have been involved in Jonathan's death. She thought it was an accident.””

I looked at him.

“Until she found the money.””

“Yes.””

He closed his eyes.

“After that, she began investigating everything.””

I leaned forward.

“What happened before she died?””

Thomas looked at the door.

“Is Daniel outside?””

“Yes.””

“Bring him in.””

I called Daniel.

He entered with Rebecca.

Thomas looked at both of them.

Then he spoke.

“Claire recorded everything in the hospital conference room.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know about the recording.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Not the one you heard.””

He reached beneath his pillow and removed a small folded note.

“My mother gave this to me before she died,” he whispered.

I opened it.

There was a handwritten message.

The final recording is hidden where Jonathan first trusted Robert.

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is that?””

Daniel considered it.

“Jonathan's original office?””

Thomas shook his head.

“No. The garage.””

I remembered the photograph of the damaged car.

“The garage where Jonathan's vehicle was stored?””

“Yes.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Why would Claire hide a recording there?””

Thomas's eyes filled.

“Because she found something in the original maintenance records.””

“What?””

He struggled to breathe.

Daniel moved closer.

“Thomas, take your time.””

Thomas gripped my hand.

“Your mother discovered that the brakes hadn't failed because of an accident.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Then what happened?””

Thomas whispered:

“Someone had replaced them.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

He looked directly at me.

“Robert.””

My chest tightened.

“Did he kill Jonathan?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I saw him in the garage that night. He had grease on his hands. He told me Jonathan's car was being repaired.””

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“Why didn't you report him?””

“Because Robert threatened to destroy Claire's company. He told me he would make sure she lost custody of Rebecca and Maya.””

I stared.

“He threatened to take me?””

Thomas nodded.

“I believed him.””

My hands began shaking.

“So you let him stay in our lives?””

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

I pulled my hand away.

“You let him raise me.””

“I thought he would love you.””

“You thought?””

Thomas looked devastated.

“I was wrong.””

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then Rebecca stepped closer.

“Thomas, what about Claire's death?””

He looked at her.

“That's the part I never understood.””

“What do you mean?””

“Claire called me the night she died. She said she had found the original maintenance records and was going to confront Robert.””

My heart pounded.

“What time?””

“About nine.””

I remembered the date.

The night my mother died.

Thomas continued.

“She asked me to come to the hospital. I arrived around ten thirty.””

“What happened?””

“I saw Vanessa leaving the corridor outside her room.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Did you speak to her?””

“Yes. She told me Claire was sleeping and that I shouldn't disturb her.””

I felt cold.

“Then?””

“Twenty minutes later, a nurse announced that Claire had gone into cardiac arrest.””

I stared at him.

“Are you saying Vanessa was there when Mom died?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I don't know what she did. But I know she had something in her hand when she left the corridor.””

“What?””

“A small glass bottle.””

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Medication?””

“Possibly,” he answered.

Thomas began coughing.

The nurse rushed inside and ordered us to leave.

I stepped back.

“Wait. One more question.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Who killed my mother?””

He swallowed.

“I don't know.””

I stared at him.

“But I know who covered it up.””

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward Daniel.

The room went silent.

Then he whispered:

“Daniel Harrison.””

I turned.

Daniel stood completely still.

Thomas continued.

“Daniel was the person who signed the hospital incident report. He changed the time of death and removed the original witness statement.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

He didn't answer.

“Daniel?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The word hit me harder than any accusation.

Rebecca stepped between us.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Claire asked me to.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She was afraid Robert and Vanessa would use the hospital records to destroy the investigation. She asked me to delay the release of certain documents until the company ownership could be protected.””

Thomas shook his head.

“She asked you to preserve the evidence, not erase it.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“I know.””

I felt sick.

“You knew Vanessa was involved?””

“I suspected it.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone has been protecting me while stealing the truth.””

Daniel looked down.

“I made a terrible decision.””

The nurse returned and asked us to leave.

As I walked out, I heard Thomas call my name.

“Maya.””

I turned.

He pointed toward the envelope in my hand.

“Your mother left one more instruction.””

I opened it.

A final line was written beneath the message.

If Daniel confesses, ask him what happened to the original hospital footage.

I looked at him.

“What footage?””

Daniel went pale.

Then Rebecca's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed almost immediately.

“What do you mean the warehouse was broken into?””

She listened.

Then she looked at me.

“The police found the videotape.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

Rebecca lowered the phone.

“Destroyed.””

I closed my eyes.

Then she added:

“But they found something else.””

“What?””

“A security camera recording from the hospital parking garage on the night your mother died.””

I stared at her.

“Who is in it?””

Rebecca turned the phone toward me.

The footage showed a woman leaving the hospital at 11:47 p.m.

She wore a dark coat and carried a small leather handbag.

The image was blurry.

But the face was visible.

It was Vanessa.

And she wasn't alone.

May you like

Walking beside her was my biological father.

Thomas Reed.
