Chapter 6: The Man Who Never Disappeared
I barely slept.
At eight the next morning, I returned to Daniel's office with the photograph of Thomas Reed.
He had already made several calls.
When I entered, he closed his laptop.
“We need to be careful.””
“I'm tired of being careful.””
“I understand.””
“No, you don't. That man has my mother's wedding ring. My father is hiding documents.
Vanessa has stolen my inheritance. And everyone keeps telling me to wait.””
Daniel stood.
“Thomas Reed was not simply an employee. He was your mother's closest business partner for nearly twenty years.””
“Then why did Mom say he knew what Dad did?””
“Because Thomas was the person who discovered the financial transfers.””
“And then he disappeared?””
“That's what we were told.””
I placed the photograph on the table.
“He's clearly not missing.””
Daniel studied it.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Sophie. She found the photograph on Vanessa's social media.””
He zoomed in on the background.
Behind Thomas and Vanessa was a large banner.
*CARTER DEVELOPMENT GROUP — NEW OWNERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT.*
The event was scheduled for seven that evening.
“Are you going?”” I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“Not without knowing what they're planning.””
“Then we find out.””
He considered me for several seconds.
Finally, he picked up his phone.
“Olivia, I need you to check the corporate registry for Reed Holdings. Immediately.””
While he worked, I searched through the photographs my mother had left in the blue binder.
Most showed her at business events, with employees, and beside buildings she had helped develop.
Then I found one taken at a company Christmas party.
My mother stood between Daniel and Thomas Reed.
On the back, she had written:
Two men I trusted with my life's work. One will stand beside Maya when I'm gone. The other will try to take everything from her.
I turned the photograph over again.
There were two initials beneath the message.
D.H.
T.R.
I showed Daniel.
His face tightened.
“She wrote this?””
“Yes.””
He sat down slowly.
“I was afraid of this.””
“Which one is the man who will stand beside me?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“I hope she meant me.””
“And the other?””
He didn't answer.
At noon, Olivia called.
She had discovered that Reed Holdings had been registered three weeks before my mother died.
The company's director was listed as Thomas Reed.
But the beneficial owner was someone else.
A private trust.
Registered under the name of a woman called Eleanor Price.
I recognized the name.
“Who is Eleanor Price?””
Olivia searched her records.
“She's a retired accountant. She worked for Carter Development Group until seven years ago.””
Daniel looked up sharply.
“That's impossible.””
“Why?””
“Eleanor was dismissed after a financial investigation. Claire suspected she had helped Robert conceal company funds.””
I leaned closer.
“Could she be working with Vanessa?””
“Possibly.””
Olivia opened another document.
“There's a property connected to the trust. A warehouse on the east side of town.””
Daniel checked the address.
It was the same storage facility where Unit 219 was located.
My mother's personal archive.
Everything seemed to lead back there.
“We need to get into that unit,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
“I've already submitted a request to preserve the contents. The storage company has agreed not to release access without proper authorization.””
“When can we go?””
“Tomorrow morning.””
I looked at the clock.
“What about tonight's event?””
Daniel closed the file.
“Tonight may give us more answers than the storage unit.””
At six thirty, I stood outside the ballroom of the Grand Meridian Hotel.
I wore a simple black dress borrowed from Olivia.
Daniel had arranged for us to attend as legal representatives of the Carter estate.
The ballroom glittered with crystal chandeliers.
Waiters carried champagne.
Business executives stood in small groups, laughing as if nothing terrible had happened behind the company's polished image.
Then I saw my father.
He stood on the stage beside Vanessa.
She wore a diamond necklace I recognized immediately.
It had belonged to my mother.
My father's microphone crackled.
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us tonight. After months of difficult restructuring, I'm proud to announce a new partnership that will secure the future of Carter Development Group.””
Applause filled the room.
Vanessa took his hand.
“And I'd like to thank the person who made this possible,” Dad continued.
“My wife, Vanessa.””
More applause.
I felt sick.
Then a man stepped onto the stage.
Thomas Reed.
He looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“It's wonderful to see so many familiar faces,” he said.
“Some of you may remember me from my earlier years with the company.””
A few people applauded.
Thomas raised his glass.
“Tonight represents more than a business partnership. It represents the restoration of something that was unfairly taken away.””
My father nodded.
Vanessa smiled.
Thomas continued.
“Claire Carter built an extraordinary company. Unfortunately, she made several decisions near the end of her life that created unnecessary legal complications.””
I stepped forward.
“That's a lie.””
The room fell silent.
My father turned.
“Maya?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
Thomas looked almost amused.
“Ah. Claire's daughter.””
I walked closer to the stage.
“My mother never made those decisions.””
Dad stepped toward the microphone.
“This isn't the time.””
“Then when is? When you finish selling everything she left me?””
A few guests exchanged glances.
Vanessa grabbed Dad's arm.
“Robert, get her out of here.””
Thomas raised one hand.
“Let the girl speak.””
I stared at him.
“Why are you wearing my mother's wedding ring?””
The room became completely silent.
Thomas glanced at his hand.
Then he smiled.
“Your mother gave it to me.””
I felt my heart pounding.
“Why?””
He leaned toward the microphone.
“Because Claire knew I was the only person she could trust.””
My father suddenly stepped forward.
“That's enough, Thomas.””
But Thomas ignored him.
“Your mother and I had an agreement, Maya. An agreement that your father and Vanessa have spent two years trying to destroy.””
He reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.
“I was supposed to give you this after Claire's death.””
My father's face went pale.
Vanessa whispered something into his ear.
Thomas looked directly at me.
“Unfortunately, I was unable to do that.””
“Why?””
He held up the envelope.
“Because someone threatened to kill me if I ever contacted you.””
A gasp spread through the ballroom.
Dad rushed toward him.
“Put that away!””
Thomas stepped backward.
Then he said something that made my knees weaken.
“Your mother didn't leave you eighteen million dollars, Maya.””
He opened the envelope.
“She left you the controlling ownership of a company worth more than eighty million.””
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Vanessa's champagne glass slipped from her hand and shattered against the floor.
I stared at Thomas.
“Why didn't Daniel tell me?””
Thomas turned toward the lawyer.
For the first time that evening, Daniel looked genuinely frightened.
“Because Daniel wasn't supposed to be protecting you,” Thomas said.
“He was supposed to be protecting the secret.””
I looked at Daniel.
He took one step toward me.
“Maya, don't believe everything he's telling you.””
Thomas removed another document from the envelope.
It was a signed statement from my mother.
At the bottom, beneath her signature, were six handwritten words.
Daniel knows who really killed me.
My breath caught.
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone completely white.
And then my father shouted from the stage:
“That's enough! Arrest him before he tells her what happened in that hospital room!””
Two security guards moved toward Thomas.
But Thomas didn't resist.
May you like
He simply looked at me and whispered:
“Ask your father why your mother was afraid of you finding out that he wasn't your biological father.””
