Chapter 3: The Man My Mother Feared
I couldn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my father's name beneath the bank transfer.
Robert Carter.
My father.
The man who had held my hand at my mother's funeral and promised he would always protect me.
The man who had told me Vanessa would never replace my mother.
The man who had just threatened me for opening a box my mother had specifically prepared for me.
Daniel had arranged for me to stay in a small apartment owned by a client of his firm.
It wasn't luxurious, but the door locked securely, and nobody knew the address.
At seven the next morning, he called.
“Maya, I reviewed the contents of the flash drive.””
“What did you find?””
“Financial records, emails, and several recorded conversations.””
I sat up.
“Conversations with whom?””
“Your father. Vanessa. And Thomas Reed.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Can I hear them?””
“Not yet. I want to explain what we're dealing with first.””
“Mr. Harrison, please stop protecting me from the truth.””
He exhaled.
“Your mother discovered that money was being diverted from Carter Development Group. At first, she suspected an accounting error. Then she found evidence of unauthorized transfers.””
“Who was taking the money?””
“Your father and Vanessa.””
I felt sick.
“How much?””
“Over four million dollars, spread across several accounts.””
I pressed my hand against my forehead.
“Why didn't Mom tell me?””
“Because she was trying to protect you. She believed the people involved might target you if they knew how much evidence she had collected.””
I remembered my mother's final months.
The late-night phone calls.
The locked study.
The way she sometimes stopped talking when Dad entered the room.
I had thought she was frightened because she was dying.
Maybe she had been frightened because she knew what was happening around her.
Daniel continued.
“Your mother confronted Robert shortly before she passed away. According to the recording, he admitted knowing about the transfers.””
“Did he admit stealing the money?””
“He admitted authorizing them.””
I closed my eyes.
“Play it.””
Daniel was silent.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
A moment later, a recording began.
My mother's voice came through the speaker.
“Robert, I know about the accounts in Delaware.””
My father's voice sounded irritated.
“Not now, Claire.””
“You transferred money from the company without authorization.””
“I was fixing a problem.””
“You moved nearly a million dollars into an account Vanessa controls.””
There was a pause.
Then Dad spoke.
“Vanessa and I have a future together. You need to understand that.””
My mother's voice shook.
“You're stealing from your daughter.””
“I'm securing my future.””
“She is your daughter, Robert.””
“And you're making everything impossible.””
I heard something hit a table.
Then my mother spoke again.
“If you touch Maya's inheritance, I will make sure she knows exactly who you are.””
My father laughed bitterly.
“You think she'll believe you?””
The recording ended.
I sat motionless.
For years, I had defended him whenever relatives suggested he had changed after marrying Vanessa.
I had told myself grief made him distant.
I had told myself he was simply trying to rebuild his life.
Now I understood that while I was mourning my mother, he had been planning what to do with everything she left behind.
“Is there more?”” I asked.
“Yes.””
“Play it.””
This recording was shorter.
My mother's voice sounded weaker.
“Vanessa, you cannot make Maya sign those documents.””
Vanessa laughed.
“She trusts me more than you think.””
“She is sixteen.””
“She's old enough to hold a pen.””
“You know the trust doesn't work that way.””
“Then we'll make it work another way.””
My mother's breathing became uneven.
“Robert won't let you hurt her.””
Vanessa answered without hesitation.
“Robert is the reason I'm doing this.””
Then came a sentence that made my blood run cold.
“When you're gone, Claire, nobody will stand between us.””
The recording stopped.
I stared at the phone.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Your mother saved that conversation two weeks before her death.””
“Why didn't she go to the police?””
“She was preparing a formal complaint. But her illness progressed rapidly, and she died before the process was completed.””
I swallowed.
“Did Vanessa cause her death?””
Daniel's silence lasted too long.
“We don't have evidence of that, Maya. We must not confuse suspicion with proof.””
I nodded, though my stomach was twisting.
“Then what happens now?””
“We challenge the transfer, seek an emergency injunction against the property sale, and investigate the unauthorized loan.””
“Will Vanessa know?””
“She probably already suspects.””
As if summoned by his words, my phone lit up.
An incoming call.
*VANESSA CARTER.*
I stared at it.
Daniel gestured for me to answer and put it on speaker.
“Hello?””
“Maya, sweetheart.””
Her voice was sugary.
The same voice she used when relatives visited.
“Where have you been?””
“Why?””
“Your father is worried.””
I almost laughed.
“He texted me threats yesterday.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa sighed.
“Oh, honey. You know how emotional he gets when he's under pressure.””
“Why did you make me sign those papers?””
Another pause.
“Because you were going to inherit things you weren't mature enough to manage.””
“They weren't yours.””
“Your mother left behind a mess.””
“My mother left me a trust.””
Vanessa's breathing changed.
“So you've been talking to Daniel.””
I said nothing.
She lowered her voice.
“You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.””
“Then explain it to me.””
“I don't owe you an explanation.””
“You took my house.””
“I protected the family from your mother's terrible decisions.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was writing something on a notepad.
“Then why did you borrow $2.4 million against it?””
Silence.
For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.
Then she laughed.
A sharp, ugly sound.
“You really think a lawyer can save you?””
“I think my mother knew what you were planning.””
“You don't know anything about your mother.””
“Maybe not. But I'm learning.””
Her voice turned icy.
“Listen carefully, Maya. Your father has spent years trying to keep this family together. Don't destroy him because you're angry about being asked to leave.””
“You threw me out in the rain.””
“You signed the papers.””
“You lied about what they were.””
“Prove it.””
The call ended.
Daniel looked up.
“You handled that well.””
I wasn't proud of myself.
My hands were shaking.
But something had changed.
For the first time since my mother's death, I wasn't begging someone to let me stay.
I was asking why they had stolen what belonged to me.
That afternoon, Daniel arranged a meeting with a forensic accountant named Olivia Bennett.
She reviewed the bank records from the flash drive and discovered something neither of us expected.
The $2.4 million loan Vanessa had secured wasn't simply money for personal expenses.
It had been transferred through three companies.
The final destination was an account belonging to a company called Reed Holdings.
Thomas Reed's company.
The missing financial director.
“Why would Vanessa send money to him?”” I asked.
Olivia enlarged the transaction history.
“That's what we're trying to determine.””
Daniel studied the screen.
“Thomas disappeared before Claire died. If he received this money, he may not have disappeared voluntarily.””
I looked at the photograph from Box 417.
My mother's handwriting was visible on the back.
The person in this photograph knows what your father did before I became ill.
“Can we find him?”” I asked.
Olivia nodded.
“There's a payment to a storage facility outside the city. It was made under Reed Holdings.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What's the address?””
She printed a page.
I recognized the location immediately.
It was a storage facility less than twenty minutes from my mother's house.
And beneath the address was a note in the transaction description.
*UNIT 219 — PERSONAL ARCHIVE — DO NOT RELEASE WITHOUT ROBERT CARTER'S AUTHORIZATION.*
Daniel stared at it.
“Your father has been keeping something there.””
I looked at the date of the most recent payment.
It had been made yesterday.
Someone was still maintaining that storage unit.
“Then let's go,” I said.
Daniel shook his head.
“Not without proper authorization. We'll arrange the necessary legal steps.””
I nodded reluctantly.
But as I gathered my things, my phone rang again.
This time, it was Dad.
I answered.
“Maya.””
His voice sounded different.
No anger.
No threats.
Just exhaustion.
“Sweetheart, I need you to come home.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
“Vanessa has been making mistakes. Things have gotten out of control.””
“Things?””
“The paperwork. The loan. Everything.””
My heart began beating faster.
“What do you want from me?””
“I want to explain.””
“You had two years to explain.””
He was quiet.
Then he said something I hadn't expected.
“Your mother wasn't supposed to leave you that money.””
I gripped the phone.
“What does that mean?””
“Claire promised me something before she died.””
“What?””
“That the company would remain under my control.””
“Why would she promise you that if she put everything in a trust for me?””
My father sighed.
“Because she knew what I had done.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
He was no longer taking notes.
He was listening carefully.
“What did you do, Dad?””
My father didn't answer immediately.
Then he whispered:
“I didn't just take the money, Maya. I signed something before your mother died. Something that could put both of us in prison.””
My blood turned cold.
“What did you sign?””
And before he could answer, another voice came through the phone.
Vanessa.
“Robert, hang up! She doesn't know about the second will!””
The line went dead.
I stared at my phone.
Daniel slowly stood.
“Second will?””
I looked at the photograph of my mother.
For two years, I had believed she left me an inheritance.
Now I was beginning to suspect she had left me something much more dangerous.
May you like
Proof of what my family had done.
And possibly the one document that could destroy them all.
